Kreuhnkohrman, Thanks for uploading this er,unusual, performance. I really thought that I had seen everything but James Last plays Hawkwind brings my life to a new plateau of awareness. I love the way that James Last' involvement as conductor seems to be stand tapping one or both feet while clicking his fingers and slowly arcing around to face the orchestra! Also, the gimp of the guitarist at 1.05 just does it for me. Epic.
When you think about it-- rock and pop in many cases is standard simple music- but Last had musicians of the first calibre- Check the guitar solo- casually amazing-- A rock guitarist would be creaming his pants and gurning like mad if he was soloing half that good- But no theatrics-- just brilliance- Most call something 'great' or 'shit' depending on their personal and usually shallow tastes- with no regard for musicianship or quality
Yeah, that's the main thing that comes up for me with easy listening or muzak. The amount of skill and craft and person-hours that went in to producing the most innocuous or mass-appeal output is eyewatering by modern standards.
What a load of ill informed nonsense. Robert Calvert wrote the song. All Lemmy did was sing it. James Last has done sooo much more. This is only a little footnote in his repertoire.
Thinking about it.... If James didn't wash for a couple of months and slept in his suit at the same time, he'd fit into Hawkwind quite easily!...... Brilliant tune also! Great band!
Yes, it's like with ABBA - they were quite a good band by themselves, but it's wjen you hear the wild variety of cover versions in many different styles and arrangements (by other established bands and rock/dance acts, of course), tribute albums etc, that you sense the innate quality of their songwriting.
Yea. Lemmy was no "God" yet in 1974. It would be a tribute to Hawkwind if anything. Lemmy was the newcomer in Hawkwind when they wrote Silver Machine. Robert Calvert wrote it. In Lemmy's words, Robert couldn't sing it right, so all the members tried but Lemmy nailed it in 2 takes and he claims the rest of the band wasn't too happy about it. But yea, I guess you can say it's a tribute to him, to some extent, if you're looking back, but at the time, for sure, not a tribute to Lemmy.
Hawkwind had their similarities to krautrock, plus, before Lemmy, they had British bass guitarist, Dave Anderson, from the krautrock band, Amon Duul II (1969-70). He was the only non-German. But Hawkwind were British, not German. "A real Spacerock classic" would probably be more fitting.
Silver Machine was an ok song, which is why it's no surprise the public gravitated to it. This is oddly kind of good. I'd say that they should have done Brainstorm, but ICU with Nik Turner did a punky ska version later on.
Strangest video I've ever seen on UA-cam, and that's saying a lot. Not that it's particularly bad, of course - it proves that anything went in the 70s, and that everyone looked like a hippie back then. Priceless.
watch - What the Future Sounded Like (2006) & at 17:57 is an image of this band... A brilliant documentary about the early days of EMS and the men behind it.
This is like a bull in reverse, the horns at the back and the arsehole at the front...but fair play to them for doing this tune to cringe along to....love to hear Hawkwind do one of James's tunes....thanks for posting the vid.........
I used to jokingly refer to Road to Utopia as "James Last Plays Hawkwind". Now we know what that sounds like for real. The guitar solo's better than Brock's!
I don,t think that organ is producing the modulated white noise this song starts with but it's a swinging version. I like to think that Uncle NIK would enjoy it.....
Well done and cool version. Is this real live or playback? Funny with the guy making the electronic sound in the beginning, it sounds pretty similar to the original, so I wondered if the sound we hear is what he really makes there and then. Hawkwind used something called Audio generator to make those sounds. I dont think that is what this guy is using?
I kinda like this - it's how Hawkwind would sound for strippers in dodgy 70's British pubs and working men's clubs....
Kind of how they sound now with Mike Batt.
I nearly lost my coffee then
🤣🤣😂
And they didn't do that anyway?
My Granny's favourite playing Hawkwind - outstanding. I love coming across little gems like this on UA-cam.
I was prepared to hate this but it's quite cheered me up.
This is surprisingly good - and a very unusual pairing of cover and band. :)
Wow! Why have I never heard/seen this before? Fantastic cover.
Never underestimate the six-string man in a swing band. :-D
Kreuhnkohrman,

Epic.
hahhaha
Damn this is pretty good. My parents had James Last records and some of them were cheesy but this hits the sweet spot for me.
This is Hawkwind (!) after they also mutated their time travel "In search of space" upon leaving Alpha Centauri.
Loving it, great classic rock track!!
I hated the James Last stuff my parents played... but this is something else!!!❤
Surprised me totally.
Grown up with James Last, too. Never heard this, however.
Only in the seventies could happen. And look at the pink shirts.....

anyone else would have loved to hear this freeform into a 20 minute version?
groovy as fuck
Zu geil!!! Dass ich das noch erleben darf... hab ich doch damals glatt verpasst🤩, Lemmy wäre stolz!
This is fabulous.....
R.i.p. James Last. So glad i finally got to see you a couple of years ago.
James Last makes Lemmy look like the Oil of Olay girl. Rock personified.
Someone's spiked my bloody tea.........and i'm loving it!
Pleasant surprise from James Lost in space.....
This is fucking fantastic. i thought I d never say this of James Last. But this is JUST GREAT
This is ridiculously good and the bass player and drummer clearly know the score. Ola!
That was really good 👍
Lemmy sent here. Thanks for the trip Dad.
The Fall got me here, how Idk?
✌️ 🤔
Não tem como segurar... é uma emoção muito grande... essa mistura da orquestra arrepia... sensacional!!!
That is fuckin BRRRRRRRRRilliant!!!!
James Last is kinda special
For those of you who are Irish this is like Lemmy meets THE Sunday Game 😂😂😂😂
All I can say is after all those rock supergroup s appear, finally Here at Last, the one and only James Last.
By far the best thing James Last has ever done, You owe your career to Lemmy, End of Story.
What a load of ill informed nonsense. Robert Calvert wrote the song. All Lemmy did was sing it. James Last has done sooo much more. This is only a little footnote in his repertoire.
great brass arrangement .
That is priceless! Love it!
Weirdly excellent!
Dig the groovy version of Silver Machine - must have ben wrong about my mum buying all those James Last albums back then.
Reminds me of that UA-cam clip of the Lawrence Welk band playing Sister Ray...
I put this back to back with that Sister Ray clip on a dvdr once
Priceless!
Thinking about it.... If James didn't wash for a couple of months and slept in his suit at the same time, he'd fit into Hawkwind quite easily!...... Brilliant tune also! Great band!
omg this is fantastic!!!
Awesome!!!
This song translates so well to a funk horn section! A tribute to Lemmy and Hawkwind's songwriting of course.

Lemmy had nothing to do with the writing.
Yea. Lemmy was no "God" yet in 1974. It would be a tribute to Hawkwind if anything. Lemmy was the newcomer in Hawkwind when they wrote Silver Machine. Robert Calvert wrote it. I am sure I spotted Francis Rossi in this clip.....can you imagine Quo play Hawkwind?
Big James Last. God-like status !
Fab! Gear! Groovy!
I feel better now
Wonderful a real Krautrock classic! I grew with that swinging acid sound on TV, lol...
Hawkwind had their similarities to krautrock, plus, before Lemmy, they had British bass guitarist, Dave Anderson, from the krautrock band, Amon Duul II (1969-70). He was the only non-German. But Hawkwind were British, not German. "A real Spacerock classic" would probably be more fitting.

a gang of hippys spiked james last to make this !! is quite good i like it !!
R.I.P . James Last!
I'm nicking that guitar solo. Love the boogie-woogie piano too....
1:00 I mean, he's not massively unlike Nik of this time period, put a daft hat on and it's him.
GENIUS!
this is actually pretty great!
Strangest video I've ever seen on UA-cam, and that's saying a lot. Not that it's particularly bad, of course - it proves that anything went in the 70s, and that everyone looked like a hippie back then. Priceless.
Class ! Pity it cuts out before the end.
i would try karaoke over this, but i have a morbid fear of dying of laughter
watch - What the Future Sounded Like (2006) & at 17:57 is an image of this band...
A brilliant documentary about the early days of EMS and the men behind it.
Love it. Wish they did Brainstorm
I came here to hate it, but actually I love it :)
He he he, the 70's had a lot to answer for....
a party great indeed
Almost surreal...but not half bad...... just add a bit of the big girl, and that boy with the hat.. (-; RIP!
Genius!
That is fucking bizarre!
How does it destroy the original? It's just a cover, man. It doesn't hurt the original whatsoever.
Brilliant.
The artist with the most hit LPs (UK chart) without ever entering the singles chart...bizarre!
Groovy!
@sbits I was passing judgement on James Last's violations. Not on on Hawkwind.
This is so cool
James Last - one happenin' dude.
Golden times in the 1970s...
That's when a lot of us landed.
A shame things turned out so crap by the 1990s...
Tell me this is a dream!!
i like the one with the long hair and the facial fur
Gobsmacking!
But better than my fevered imagination....
yep, but he took on the challenge like no other and brought it to millions of people who otherwise wouldn't have cared at all.
Goeie kerel die James.........sinds nu hoor
HA! Fantastic :-)
This is like a bull in reverse, the horns at the back and the arsehole at the front...but fair play to them for doing this tune to cringe along to....love to hear Hawkwind do one of James's tunes....thanks for posting the vid.........

@MossleyJardinier It`s a camera man and a "cable" man
I don,t think that organ is producing the modulated white noise this song starts with but it's a swinging version. I like to think that Uncle NIK would enjoy it.....
Guitar & Piano player.......sign em up, quick!
cant remember this on his party greats album
Still better than this shitty "Infected by the Scourge of the Earth" version...
Interesting..
I imagine Dean Martin dancing to this in a 60s spy spoof.
Iv seen it all now........😏
There is another cool bigband cover of this here on yt: "Hugo Strasser silver machine". Not as bombstic as Lasts´, but I think more groovier.

Er,, This is actually Good,
Spooky - the saxophonist looks like a repectable Nik Turner and there is definitely something of the 'Dave Brock' about James Last!!!
re: who are those guys playing with Mr Last anyway?
members of Lucifer's Friend:
James Last?
James Last of James Last Orchestra?
This song was popular enough for him to do a cover?
Hell yes!
It's like as if Lawrence Welk went rock roll.....😁😁😁
Your comment made me laugh out loud, cottage cheese and cling peaches !! :)
Ge-wel-dig!
There ya go, kids. That's what NOT taking drugs did to people in the 70s. Just say yes.
Interesting!
Dave Brock will be 70 years young on Saturday! I wonder if he remembers this "tribute" haha!
Got his autograph.
Cool conducting
!!
