I saw them live completely by accident. I was in NYC on spring break. A friend told me that she had gotten two tickets for the new Angela Lansbury musical. She said that I was the only one in the group who would appreciate it. I went in expecting something like "Mame." We were dead center in the balcony. I was blown away!
A lot of people have been rightly called Broadway stars. But very few can truly said to be Broadway *legends* and this video shows two of them. Keep in mind that this event was twenty-six years after the original production of "Sweeney Todd." But Dame Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou walk out and, in a matter of seconds, ARE Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett again. All Dame Angela does is adjust her posture, and she's an evil baker. Len Cariou lets out one sinister laugh and he's Sweeney (but I think my favorite moment is when Dame Angela makes him break before the last verse and he has to take a few seconds to control his giggles!). They nail every joke, every line, every note. We're so lucky that we have recordings of this amazing performance. Thank you for everything, Dame Angela. You're making them applaud in Heaven now...
Am I correct that even in a real performance of Sweeney Todd, the two characters are "miming" throughout this song - they are making plans to bake people in pies - which they will carry out - but at this stage, she doesn't really have the "meat" yet - they're still kind of planning it?
i saw them twice. I also saw Angela Lansbury and George Hern. Next I saw the John Doyle production with Michael Cerveris and Patti Lupone. I also watched the concert version on PBS. This is all to say Len Cariou was and is still the best Sweeney and Angelia Lansbury the best Mrs. Lovett
My God, it always sends shivers down my spine when I see them perform together as Sweeny and Mrs. Lovett! Thank you, Mr. Cariou, and bless your eternal rest, Dame Angela.
How fitting that my introduction to SWEENEY TODD was on PBS's GREAT PERFORMANCES, and my first seeing this song again after Angela's passing is this wonderful clip. We're so fortunate that her performances will continue to be enjoyed by future generations.
I’ve been listening to Sweeney Todd lately and the complexity of the lyrics and music boggles my mind. Angela Lansbury is a genius to perform it so clearly, so strongly, with nuances and total control, amazing performance.
i was there that night. it was star studded. earlier in the evening angela tripped badly to the ground over some cables on stage. huge gasp! but the show went on. a true trooper!
So Glad I am just Old eNough to have been able to enjoy these folks. What a duo these two. And to get to see them & so many other legends on MSW. Dame Angela will be So missed. 😢
Hello God bless them both. My aunt connie belanger was very close friends in Riverview in Winnipeg. To Lens sister. Len grew up in Elmwood in Winnipeg begore going to New York.
I didn't know better as a kid, but as an adult my mind is certifiably blown learning that Mrs. Teapot from Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast is also Mrs. Lovett!
Not to mention Jessica Fletcher who seemed borderline angelic (no pun intended) at times. There is a joke about her being the killer all those times - only because it blows everyone's mind that a murder happens wherever she is - but that's a joke of course...and then you remember she's Mrs. Lovett, too. Cariou also guest-starred on MSW as a secret agent who pops up in Jessica's life every so often - Michael Haggerty. There is some undertone of attraction between him and Jessica - but he's...well, kind of shady and deceptive in some ways.
Before was famous. How time flys. Old friends Belanger family in Winnipeg Canada. Later..im member of and fellow member..Angela the Noel Coward Society in London..Great 👍👋
What a couple of legends. RIP, Angela! There will be never another Lovett like you.
I SO wanted to see her in it.
@@samprimera5545 I've seen them (not live, on DVD). They were wonderful!!!
@@Donnagata1409 You're so right."They".I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to play against Angela but Len Cariou.

@@mervyngreene6687 awesome!
If you still can sing Sondheim at that ages..you're an artist.
I love how she gets Len tickled so many times through this performance. Angela and Len were wonderful together on stage and on screen

Beautifully stated!!!!
@@Delete338 I hear that a DVD was made of Sweeney Todd - with Angela, but with George Hearn as Todd? I wonder why Cariou wasn't in that?

I had the thrill of seeing them perform this in the 2nd row way back in 1980
`i saw that as well!!!!!

Doesn’t it say “2005”?
@@lukacunningham342 yes, this performance was in 2005. they originated the roles back in 1979!
I missed Sweeney, but I caught her a couple of years later in the revival of "Mame"! Fantastic!😁
God, she was 80 here. So spry.
I always liked it when Mr. Cariou appeared on Murder, She Wrote.
Agree. My favorite guest actor on that series. Lifted it above all the others. True Master.. .. and always handsome and still is.

Only Sondheim could write a song about how people would taste based on their professions.

I hadn't heard that Angela had died. I have enjoyed so many of her performances. She will be missed.
This is the best thing ever, their voices are so good together!!
It is wonderful being given the opportunity to see this performance. Thank you.
Brings tears to my eyes! 🥲 Natural, pristine talent like this doesn't exist anymore.
Brilliant! Saw them both live on Broadway in the original production and they still had it all those years later. Sheer magic!
Rest In Peace, Dame Angela, you will be missed ❤
I saw them do this in Jan. of 1980 in the original production, a truly memorable night!
i was there
WOW! RIP Angela Lansbury.
So wonderful isn’t it. I saw her 3 times in London in Blythe Spirit in about 2014. She stole the show, the applause was tremendous

Mrs. Potts singing about creating human flesh pies.

I wish we had a performance recording of Cariou performing as Todd. Hearn is OK but I vastly prefer Cariou's voice.
I have good news for you, theres a video recording of he original show on youtube
Now imagine somebody walked in and heard them singing about murdering people and serving them as pies? 😂
