I purchased one last year and I love it. It is heavy, (10 litre ) as shown in this video, I would not recommend carrying up and down stairs or anything. One for upstairs , one for downstairs be much better. Benefits house feels warmer, nicer. Clothes in wardrobes stay fresh, no mouldy or fusty odours any more. The house does feel warmer and much nicer. Windows clear, bathroom and bedroom feel better. I haven’t really used it for laundry. Mine gathers up a fair amount of water quite quickly ,impressed with it. I run it for few hours at a time. Just pour out water after each use. Hope this is helpful to anyone considering a dehumidifier. I haven’t any experience with any other models.
Is it expensive to run?
I've just bought this model too, for help with clothes drying in the winter and general use, because I live in a late 50s bungalow. But an extra tip for condensation on the windows that generally collects along the sides and bottom, wipe the windows dry, and then take a dry cloth with washing up liquid and run it all around those square edges. I don't know how it works, only that it does.
Been using a dehumidifier for years. Putting drying clothes to one side, I mainly purchased it to keep humidity low during the non summer months, keeping the dry makes the house feel a lot warmer, I have it on a timer that runs it for a couple of hours in the morning and late afternoon, set to 45 to 50%, one it’s at that level it just sits in standby mode when the time periods are on. When required we but on clothes mode. This device is very effective. Don’t forget to vent your house regularly, turn off your heating and open windows for 15 to 30min, daily if possible.

Excellent review I bought a meaco a couple of years ago and tried to use it in my loft (against advice as I later found out) . I have now utilized in our spare room and we are amazed how much warmer the upstairs is. If only I had brought it down sooner. Thank you for the video.

If you can throw a sheet over the airer with the meaco inside it will dry even more quickly. I use the Lakekand dry soon airer with it's cover on, even if it's not switched on

Ive had mine just over a year and its an absolute game changer when drying laundry. Also if the heating is on it dries much quicker too.
It's really impressed me. I was having so many issues in winter with a backlog of laundry and now I can get a load dry in less than a day.

I have a dehumidifier (not this model) and mainly use it on laundry mode. I have a small flat and it’s amazing how much water it collects and it definitely speeds up the drying of clothes.
Also I don’t have room for a tumble dryer and don’t like how they shrink clothes

Have a couple of MeacoDry Arete One 12L Dehumidifier / Air Purifiers. Work well. Did have a problem with one. Meaco did brilliantly getting the problem sorted very quickly. It was returned within a couple of days. Their kit has a longer than usual warranty period.
I got one last year, its been brilliant. Made a massive difference as we had loads of mould and damp in the house. Another use for it is when the humidity is high on those hot sticky nights in the summer we put it on making a more comfortable night for sleeping
yeah we did the same this past summer, with our beasty Meaco upstairs, and Meaco pedestal fan in the bedroom!

@@vicky20237the meaco fans are excellent- much better than the much more expensive Dyson fans,which we no longer use.
I position mine side on the the clothes' horse. I found by trial and error tht this dries laundry faster by blowing through the laundry, rather than onto it. BTW it's also good for drying emulsion paint after you have decorated. Nice presentation there!

I've not used a tumble dryer for over 30 years as I found it stressed and shrank clothing,apart from the expense.
I use my meaco ABC 12l with my Lakeland drysoon- I can get a full 9kg load of washing dry in 2 hrs with both the dry soon and meaco on ( inc towels) which is great when I have several loads to do. It doesn't cost anymore as the washing dries so much faster. I also use the dry soon turned off with the meaco under it and the cover in- a 9kg load will then take between 3-4 hrs as the area the meaco is working in is considerably smaller than any room
I've also now bought the Arete 10l which is even more cost efficient to run and also has an excellent HEPA filter. I tend to keep that upstairs where I converted several rooms into a contained area for my daughter.
I use the water in my iron but also on my pot plants and baskets outside.
I previously have had an ebac for over 20 yrs, and whilst it still works it's much noisier and costs more to run.
I have cheap electricity periods when my electric is 8.8p a KW, so I utilise those times for washing and drying whenever I can.
Finally a second final spin really speeds up drying it your washer doesn't have a good spin ( mine is 1400 but a second spin cycle for towels still makes a difference).
I don't know if it's commonly known, but washers use a tiny amount of electricity unless they are heating- an extra spin on my machine showed barely any watts used on my power usage meter which I use on every new appliance I buy.
The other advantage of dehumidifiers is that they make a damp home easier to heat in the winter.
I think every home should have one!
I’ve been looking at getting a Lakeland Dry soon! I think that would really cut the drying time.
I purchased a Netta 12L model for £140 a few weeks ago primarily for moisture damp in winter. Total game changer wish I'd bought one years ago.. almost therapeutic seeing how much water is in the container 😂

I have small Hysure dehumidifiers running upstairs 24/7 in the winter. But I recommend a heat pump tumble dryer as they are cheap to run though I have dried clothes with the dehumidifier too if it's over night.
My sister had that same Bosch excell washing machine as you was a tank and lasted for 14 year till it just blew up and stopped working back in June found the spin was crap on it even though it was 1200rpm everything always felt really wet still, so she got a 2nd hand (spin dryer) for 20 quid off Facebook you just stick a bowl under the spout at the bottom and it would spin them till they were damp and light in weight in under 5 mins it was a game changer she used it for 2 years before the machine broke down again was surprising how much water was still left in the clothes after the machine had finished.
She’s got a new one now so she doesn’t need it as everything comes out spun dry almost. But was so cheep literally 2 to 3p of electricity per spin.
I have the 12 litre model. The laundry setting is the reason we bought it.
It does what it says, 3 racks of washing left in the dining room overnight on the six hour timer, brilliant. It takes all the moisture out of the clothes and out of the room so it doesn’t condense on the windows and walls.
Laundry setting is a gimmick. Any dehumidifier will work - and the humidistat will cut it off when dryness level required is met
@@gaycha6589 main purpose is probably when only using for drying clothes to set and forget it for a fixed time i.e. 6hrs where it runs at full power as supposed to from evening to next morning which would easily be double the time or more, right?
@@markus4979 not really. Laundry mode uses more power, so you may as well leave it on for 8 hours overnight as the normal eco setting. If machine has a humidistat this defined dryness of air so the laundry wil dry to the set % humidity of the room which 30-60% humidity is optimal. Your curtains abd carpets possess these levels, so will your laundry before machine cuts out. High power fir less time vs standard runnnibg for longer at lower cost. Ive had dehumidifiers for 35 years.
@@gaycha6589 That's incorrect. In laundry mode its aiming to hit 35% and then switches off after 6x hours. You could run a humidistat aiming at 50%RH and find the washing still damp.
@@mikeyb7able you could like wise set the humidistat and 35% or even 30%. After which it will switch out, so I don’t see your point. Humidistat is variable.
My dehumidifier said to leave it stand for 5 hours before switching on, so, maybe bare that in mind?
I have mine for an old and slightly leaky conservatory that made everything damp, this has helped a LOT .
Use the collected water for your car windscreen washer bottle and steam iron and for cleaning windows in home. It is effectively distilled - so you will get not water mineral marks streaks
Well, ain't this an opportune video to show up on my homepage. I've thought of buying a dehumidifier for this very purpose (drying clothes) for some time but without really looking into it, I had it in my head that I needed to spend close to £300 to get something decent and that's a fair bit of bunce in these somewhat tough times. But as you've so ably demonstrated in this video, you can get something tidy for 150 squids. You covered the whole topic very well and very succinctly. Good work, yummy mummy (lucky hubby 😉)
it depends, we got a larger one and that was £260, totally worth it though! i use that in a larger room with 3 large airers in! also for the upstairs generally

I did a small amount of research on these in the last few weeks. I knew someone who had a Meaco but I wanted something lower power and smaller for my house. I actually ended up picking up this exact model. Have it on right now for the first time drying a load of washing and it seems to be performing okay. Every other model I saw were over 200 watts I think but this was around 175 so should be more power saving than the similar models I saw.

You know the read out is relative humidity? Also the water is good for washing your windows as it doesn’t leave any residue

Been using them for years. Best way is in a sealed room (this is important for efficiency) , on a clothes horse and overnight.
Is the 6-hour laundry mode falling short because of the 10L daily performance @06:12? Would upgrading to the 20 or 25L model extract more efficiently and speed up drying time? If you had to buy again, would you opt for a larger capacity?
That’s a good questions and I couldn’t answer without trying one of the larger models. If I were to buy again I think I would stick with this one as the price was good and it does what I needed it to do, laundry isn’t taking days to dry any more!
I've managed to get a Meaco Arete 12L Dehumidifier. The thing is it's not drying our clothes as you've said it does. It does extract water very well though.
What people on UA-cam don't say is do they have their heating on in conjunction with the dehumidifier or not. I thought the reason people bought these dehumidifiers were to cut down on the usage of their central heating.
My home is pretty old so the humidity is normally in the 80s and when I put this on it drops it to just over 62° humidity on the machine but it has never gone below 60° nomatter how long I leave it on.
Even the Meaco videos on UA-cam don't say if you use your heating in conjunction with the dehumidifier or not. It doesn't even say in the manual.
Even on the Smart Dehumidifier setting it says the optimal setting you should be aiming at is 55° Humidity but mine has never reached that level so far.

I use our dehumidifier, which is a small 10L model, close to the laundry in a small room. If you’re trying to use it in a medium to large room then that could be why it’s not quite working for you. If you’re using that model to deal with humidity in your entire home it could just be that the capacity is too small. If you go on the Meaco website it sets out which models are best for the function/house size you need it for.
Any one know the type of dehumidification process this uses (Peltier/dessicant/condenser)?

No, it comes with a built in filter that you clean every month or so. The Arete comes with a Hepa filter (for air purification) BUT it makes the dehumidifier slightly noisier, we run it without it in. We bought the Arete 12L a few days ago, drying clothes in the autumn/winter has always been a problem for us, even with the radiators on. We put the unit in laundry mode, shut the bedroom door and voila, a few hours later the clothes are dry. We then open the door and let the unit work on the rest of the house during the day. We have it on 24/7, yes it's going to cost more but the heating isn't (or doesn't seem to be) working as hard, so time will tell. We paid £179 for the Arete 12L (we have nothing to do with the company) and feel it's money well spent for the laundry drying alone. Also, in the room where we used to dry the clothes, just on a maiden and radiator on, a few dark patches were forming on the walls, these have now gone ! I honestly don't know why we never got one years ago, the units you see thrown out on the street are the cheap rubbish ones, they will last for so long then give up the ghost. There's a 5 year guarantee with this, Meaco or Ebac and you can't go wrong. Hope this helps. Btw...the Arete is the latest one and is actually made for the UK climate i.e to work at lower room temperatures.

The water from a dehumidifier is the purest water. It’s distilled water. For possible dust and hair put it in a filter.
Something to be aware of.. A few years ago I left mine on for a few days as we couldn’t open our windows because of our house cat. It did too good a job, door hinges started squeaking and it dried my nose and throat membranes out and I had a horrendous cold 🤧. For that reason maybe be careful running it in your bedroom overnight.
Didn't it switch off when the water cannister got full? Most are designed to switch themselves off after 6 hrs unless you override the timer, plus you can set the humidity level so they stop working as soon as the optimum is reached- most experts state set the level at 50-55% for a domestic setting. Didn't you read the instructions?
Colds are caused by viruses, not dry atmosphere btw.
Suggest you adjust the extraction %.

So glad you got one! Yes I close the utility room door when it’s on. The lead is 2m which is fine for us, you may struggle if trying to stretch from a plug socket in your hallway to a bathroom, we need an extension when doing this.

I have the 12L meaco I read that you face the filter side towards the washing.
I bought the 12L model too. If you read the instructions, it will inform you that it uses LESS energy when you use the appliance without the filter fitted. So with filter = cleans the air. Without filter = drying clothes.

I don’t get your maths… 27p an hour for a tumble drier = £1.44 ??? How long do you expect a tumble drier to take? Mine takes about 90 to 120 minutes for a full load of towels or Jean etc… so about 50 ish. Have I misunderstood? I have both tumble drier and dehumidifier but I haven’t compared the costs as yet as I have economy 7 and dry my clothes on timer so that they finish to ironing dry by the time my daytime units kick in then I put them on a 10 minute cycle and fold them up whilst hot and don’t iron them. Interesting though, maybe hanging them and finishing them by dehumidifier might be better?
I’m confused by your cost to run as you wouldn’t run a tumble dryer for 5-6 hrs? Or do you mean it can dry the same volume of laundry as 3 -4 loads of laundry? Not a criticism as we has one on our boat ( due to necessity) . Ours would struggle to dry laundry in 6 hrs
So I don’t think I’ve explained this very well in the video, but the consensus online is a tumble dryer cycle will cost around 60p to £1.44. And the dehumidifier can dry more than one load at once I’ve found. It can depend on what you’re drying as to whether it takes 6 hours. I’ve found bedsheets take far less time, towels take more.
@@TheMummyBubble The Meaco uses 165Watts of power per hour, hence their 4p/hr based on 27.35p per kW/hr. Vented tumble dryer uses about 2.5kW for 1 hour on high setting so you could run the Meaco for 15 hours for the same cost (and heat your house unlike vented dryer). Condenser dryers use about the same energy as vented but have less laundry capacity though at least the heat stays inside your house. Heat pump dryers use about one third of the energy of vented/condenser dryer for the same load but they take maybe 1.5 times as long, and again heat your house. In summary, if you bought a heat pump dryer at about £450 (3x the Meaco), it would dry a full load in about 1.5 to 2 hours and your Meaco could run for about 5 hours for the same energy cost. PS. I don't use the condensed water which will have absorbed airborne bacteria/mould.

whats the relative humidity used when u chose laundry mode?
i don't know about that model but on our modern models it is set to about 35%, so it will run continuously for 6 hours, unless during that time it reaches the goal (which is handled in a smart way, like modern thermostats), if goal is reached it will stop dehumidifying until humidity goes up enough...

How do you prevent the clothes from stinking when drying indoors? I find they always end up smelling when not dried in the dryer
Wash at a higher temperature and/or use biological
I've found that when drying them with a dehumidifier, they don't smell bad
Dry them outside for a few hours if you can and then hang them on the racks to finish drying. If not, wash at 40 degrees, spin twice and dry them in a room with the window open a bit and the door closed.
The dehumidifier helps them not smell. The smell comes from the clothes taking so long to dry.

Free tip - House plants love the water from a dehumidifier, saves using tap water everytime as it doesn’t contain all the chemicals in the tap water.

Interesting.. Cost-wise, i'm now considering that i should have gone for a dehumidifier rather than a tumble dryer.
I definitely works out cheaper than a dryer. However for some people the dehumidifier may not be practical due to space issues with hanging clothes. For us it has been an absolutely brilliant purchase.
I part dry with dryer then finish with dehumidifier. Iv e just bought heated dryer so see how I'll get on.

Would it work faster in a grow tent?
I’ve not tried this but have seen others report they place a sheet over the dehumidifier and clothes rack to create a makeshift tent. I can’t speak to whether that’s actually safe to do.
I grew plants for sale in my conservatory it was full , my de humidifier
pulled loads of water out which I recycled back in the plants , it was essential

Where do they get the 10 litres from?!? That tank doesn't look like it would hold even 4l to be honest!
10L is what it can extract in a day (but that figure max ie high temp high humidity factors) I think this machine likley has a 2 litre rank.
Typically, a gas or electric dryer should take about 30 to 45 minutes to dry a full load of clothes. Dense fabrics-like a quilt or a load of thick bath towels-may take up to an hour to dry. Therefore wouldn’t a dryer be around the same cost ie 29pence.
Total cost would depend on the device you use and the setting run. Based on current cost of 27p per kWh a condensed dryer cycle would cost £1.30. Worth noting you can dry multiple loads at once with the dehumidifier, providing you’ve spaced the clothes out well wherever you’re hanging them. And the cost of the device is cheaper than a typical tumble dryer.
Heat pump dryers are a lot more energy efficient. My Samsung uses around 0.6 - 1.1 kwh per cycle, granted it takes a bit longer than other dryers at around 2 - 2 1/2 hours.
I agree these Meaco dehumidifiers are brill. Not only does it save a fortune not having to use the tumble dryer, bit it has totally stopped the condensation in our kitchen. One thing though: Does anyone else find their washing is stiff as a board afterwards?
I’m still not 💯 convinced that this is cost effective as my electric company stated that usage had spiked quite a bit when I used it. I’m in the process of obtaining a smart meter hopefully so I can see how much is being used. ;)
yeah watch meaco quoted figures the 175w is likely minimum. laundry mode will be more watts
Do you find clothes like jumpers and towels dry crispy and stiff like line dried?
To be honest without a tumble dryer I’ve found the towels are always a little crispy. However with the dehumidifier it’s definitely less so as they’ve dried faster.
Spray with a mix of water and just a bit of softener to help the stiffness

You can add normal tablesalt to the washing machine (where you would add softener). It helps to keep the towels feel a little softer without adding any chemicals. Obviously the effect is not the same than using fabric softeners, but I noticed a positive difference.

Wouldn't that water have a legionella risk?
Probably not legionella if used immediately but airborne bacteria/moulds are not filtered (only dust) so if you leave the water in there, there is potential for bacteria/moulds to grow. Fact - if I forget and leave the water in for a few days a thin slime collects at the base of the water collector. Bottom line, I don't re-use the water.

Not a fair comparison of prices as you wouldn’t need to run a tumble dryer for 6 hours.
I wouldn’t bother. Use a tumble dryer summer and winter. The time saving is amazing. Use a Siemens tumble and the sensor shuts it off when clothes are dry saving you time and money. Iv never noticed my energy bill to be high. Saving a few £ v time isn’t worth it. Also don’t have a water meter or you end up being a tight arse with water. I tried a water meter after the hype and quickly went back to unlimited water when the bill was almost the same per month. Honestly when people go on about the costs you listen thinking it’s going to be some kind of miracle you’re about to hear. Reality is far different to the hype or news
Not everyone has space for a tumble dryer or can afford one. And a dehumidifier isn't specifically for drying clothes. It's to remove moisture out the air so it can be put to various uses. A tumble dryer can't help the issue of a damp room. So a dehumidifier is a great alternative for some people.
I've got an LG heatpump tumble dryer.Costs very little to run and dries clothes perfectly.

The video is really good but, surely You have made a maths error - 5p per hour times 6 hours is 30p to dry your one load of washing BUT for a tumble dryer comparison you dont go 27p per hour times six because the tumble dryer wont take six hours to dry the washing ! it will take an hour or less to dry a load - so the comparision for drying one load of washing is 30p compared to 27p - making the tumble dryer CHEAPER to run not more expensive.
Hey there, the cost per cycle of a tumble dryer varies a lot. It can work out cheaper for a single cycle vs the dehumidifier but the dehumidifier can dry multiple loads at once.

I know you said 30p but I’m hearing 30p for 6hrs for dehumidifier and, 27p for a dryer for 1hr. If both of those figures refer to a Cycle of drying a load, then, it’s cheaper and faster to use a dryer and just be done with it.

@@petediaz4146 while a typically tumble dryer cycle is one hour, some things may take longer. In addition the dehumidifier can dry more than one load at a time (I can fill a drying rack with at least two loads depending on what the clothing is). And dehumidifier is generally cheaper to buy.
And no t everything can go in a dryer
So if you reuse the water to clean etc you are putting the same ammount of liquid back into your home that you extracted.Yes that really makes sense lol
Thank you, but you’ve made a big error on your cost to operate calculations… you stated that to dry a load without a tumble dryer takes approx 6 hours x 5p per hr = £0.30, however you then used the same duration in your tumble dryer calculation at £0.27p x 6hrs …. It would only take 1/2hr to 1hr max to dry a large load using a dedicated tumble dryer, therefore LESS than the airer option, as only 27p per hour. If you had a condenser dryer (like ghe 2-in-1 washing machines), it takes about 3hrs to dry a full load of towels in my experience, but a dedicated tumble dryer is far quicker.
Your operating cost estimates (savings) comparing tumble drier vs dehumidifier are completely inaccurate or erroneous at best. For example who runs their tumble drier for 5.3 hrs, mind there are low consumption driers that are based on heat pump (refrigeration cycle) technology just like some of the meaco offerings.
I don’t think I’ve explained it well and of course it will vary between tumble dryer models. The consensus view is a dryer cycle may cost from 60p to around £1.40. Which is going to be more expensive than this dehumidifier.
Negative points: no castors, carry handle should be on top, central, outlet louvres cannot deflect the air other than straight up

Same here. On mine laundry mode is timed for a few hours, maybe that’s the key difference?
