You can easily download the original book by Segovia with all these studies in them from Scribd... just search 'Segovia Sor Studies' and you'll find them :) and yes I wish Williams would make a CD with all these studies on it, that would be so exquisitely beautiful
Remembering FERNANDO SOR, who died on this day in 1839.
When I used to play these pieces in my youth, my mom would always say, "Oh, that's so pretty!" In a rage, I would exclaim "I do not study this music because it is PRETTY. I am engaged in an epic struggle to apprehend the very cornerstone of our civilization! These pieces are soaring tributes to all that is human! They are the Enlightenment itself given sonic wings! Good GOD, woman!"
She would respond, "Well, it just sounds so pleasant."
ARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!
Lighten up Francis
+J William Pope VEVO These tunes have the ability to re-align the planets in their orbit, thereby bringing peace to this world.
This is what I'm saying.
These studies cover every technique necessary to play classical guitar. They were my demise.
Some of them are brilliant, great for performance; others are dismal and plodding.
from Jose Sepulveda, the Hermeterec.......brtherjohn I, too, had that LP at one time and I cherished it....my roommate, however, COVETED it and when we went to our respective homes at semester's end, my album went home with him, not with me. No amount of cajoling, pleading or other inducements were compelling enough to get him to admit to having taken the recording, much less send it back to me! Ah, well, one lives and one learns. Let's be thankful to coolrocknroll, we owe him or her!
Very elegant and accurate and superb.
Great to hear that my post has been appreciated! This is charming music, wonderful to hear Williams playing it. I've a few other bits that I may post soon . . watch this space :o)
(*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡素晴らしい演奏をありがとうございます!😊😊😊
ホッとします。
number 8 was nice and spooky just like i hear it my crazy head
you should not put anybody in a state of God since there is only one God. You should listen to Julian Bream and Alvaro pierri two extraordinary guitarrists i think you will like them a lot.
relax bro
i am trying no 9
its beautiful as are they all of course.
I am so delighted to finally hear these recordings again after so many years. I used to have the lp! No one has played these selected etudes as good as Williams does! Why it never appeared on CD is a mystery to me. (As I understand it, Universal Music has the rights to this recording - go figure.)
You wouldn't also happen to have Williams' early stereo recording of the Torroba and Ponce album? I have an lp pressing that was reissued on the Sin Qua Non label. If you do, please post!!
Thank you for posting these recordings. I had them in cassette tapes years ago. Lost them all. I wonder if you have his early recordings of Villa Lobo's 5 Preludes? His later recordings or rather playing are not the same. Not sure if it's due to his Smallman?
yes, I posted the Villa Lobos early recordings. Click on 'mojo risin' and look around his (my) channel, and you'll find them. luv from London, Steve
I have 2 copies of this on the old Westminster Gold lp. Just found another in Mass. I knew how fantastic this recording is, so I bought 2 copies many years ago, and only played one. Then transferred it to cassette. This recording is the very highest form of musical magic to pass from human to human. Thank you so much for sharing this. God is preparing a throne for you in heaven for this gift.
Number 8 is my enemy, so difficult.
MikeLive1285 I love the 8, I'm playing it also : )
This is a nice version of 8, not as fast as many interpretations. Always thought this one was quite jazzy.
Mine too... it is marked lento as well.
Hernandez Y Aguado?
Playin no 8 right now, my teacher doesn't agree with Segovia's interpretation of the piece though, so I'm takin it a bit faster and bringing out the upper melodies more than Williams does here. It's a shame, as its a very difficult study at any speed faster than this, just can't do it justice because I'm too focused on the crazy position changes and stretches.
wonderful music
Fernando Sor.

Thank you SO much.
ouah oh magnifique ,
bravo ,
6 e' qual op? vorrei sapere come si chiama esattamente!
op. 35
Great, thank you, I didn't know he recorded these.
He recorded these when he was only 19 years old.
Sadly they don't appear within the so-called 'complete John Williams CD collection of 52 CDs and a DVD. So glad my Dad kept his copy of this wonderful LP, and thank goodness for the ability to digitalise everything and make art and music potentially Timeless.
I still am searching for the Ponce Torroba cd, lp by JW, especially for the theme varie et finale, just a question: did your dad also......(???)
Time ta Sor!! Mahalo for da goodies!
Awful playing
