To me this wonderful performance makes the case for several points: 1) playing Bach on a "standard" cello in 2) modern tuning; 3) with a rich tone and a 4) tasteful amount of vibrato.5) The phrasing and the articulation beautifully bring out the building blocks as well as the overall architecture of the music. Most importantly, 7) the conspicuous absence of the otherwise widespread practice of chopping up phrases ad nauseam into infinite numbers of little snippets, supposedly in the interest of presenting the structure of the music - which accomplishes only one things: taking life and breath out of the music. In this performance, the piece is allowed to manifest itself in front of my eyes and ears, beautifully and meaningfully. All I need to do is to sit back and receive.
