I saw the band play at the Roxy Roller Rink around this time. Bob Nastanovic was the tour manager and jumped onstage. It was right after 9-11 and they would not let my Venezuelan gf at the time in the venue w/o a passport or id. She was kind enough to wait for me after the show. “ “But honey. C’mon. It’s Steve. Steve Malkmus. Babe you know I can’t miss this show. It’s his first solo tour. I love you….”
The vocal melody in the verses is extremely similar to Say Yes. As far as taste in Smith goes, Malkmus's is superb (as is his taste in The Fall, Echo & the Bunnymen, Sonic Youth, etc, etc...)
@nilbog44 I am a huge fan of Pavement, and there are some songs that i find awesome on this album. Just platform blues for an exemple. Jonny greenwood harmonica, stephen's voice "à la" lou reed and this guitar work. Oh damn, I love this song so much.
(Not a brag...) I've watched 90% of Late Show episodes and Letterman would usually talk to the drummer or not say much. He would say "don't neglect your studies" if he didn't enjoy a song often. Random Examples: He really liked Starting to Hurt by Ryan Adams and From the Hips by Cursive. He really disliked 'And You Will Know Us by the trail of dead'. He rarely did what he did here so he's being sincere. Also, I love Malkimus jamming with Paul. That's great.
@@lewis123646 Apparently he disliked At The Drive-In when they performed on his show. He supposedly said "Don't quit your day jobs" or something along those lines during the commercial break.
@@michaelgraham9774 Really? I like At the Drive-In, it wouldn't surprise me that he would use that phrase, but he tended like a lot more intense or out-there stuff and not pop. I know he loved Warren Zevon like no other (and had him fill in for paul many times as bandleader). However, his musical taste surprised me a lot. I remember him talking about Nine Inch Nails performance at Woodstock for about ten minutes, he clearly loved it. As a nightly viewer, I hated the era of Late Show where they would cut to commercial right after the musical act performed and I couldn't see Dave's interaction with them.
Didn't find this company, could you direct me? Reading in a forum, people mentioned the Lovetone Big Cheese Fuzz pedal, and by the pics, really seems that's the pedal.
@sushilll111 Completely incorrect. Other members of the band made it known the Nigel Godrich (Producer of Terror Twilight) gave Stephen most of the attention and didn't allow much input from the other members of Pavement. Nastanovich was noted for doing a lot of improv stuff without Stephen's input. Ibold makes most of his own baselines. Yeah, Malkmus and Kannberg played the majority of instruments on the first pavement album (definitely not the first three), but he didnt write those parts.
@Andysays the first line he say... "she shakes a man". I don't think it hurts the performance. I think true musicians always improv and keep things loose, it sounds better. And this is a great song. Thanks for the post!
jeez best is a matter of preference... The first cd I eved purchased was brighten. We were at a cd shop in harvard, simply and amazing record and the best imo
The first line is vaguely similar, not extremely similar. Like singing "I'm in love ... of a girl" . And the rest of the lines in the melody really aren't that similar. But, I love both of the songs ... they're both doing something right.
Very wierd.. I am a big Elliott Smith fan and thought that Malkmus sounded a lot like Elliott before knowing that they were from the same place. Must be the Portland air :)
@Andysays Yeah the first one was good. I didn't like the second one until more recently. It's got some really epic songs on there and is well worth giving another chance.
He goes back and forth. I saw a performance where he had double sided tape and he'd stick the pic there and grab it when he needed it. He's pretty slick about it, you almost don't notice. Interesting that he uses the pick more when playing rhythm and fingers solos.
@luyendao Pavement is 5. Malkmus is 1 (and a great one at that, there's no denying). Spiral Stairs, Bob, Mark and Steve...couldn't have been a Pavement without them.
@luyendao Pavement were barely a band. They lived in different cities, never practised, never wrote together, and just used to meet up once a year to record/tour. Really was just Malkmus and a backing band. Just like this. Why it sounds exactly the same
This song bums me out. I've known "Jenny" types, and I've loved two in my life. . . ahahah, and they've left me for "Ess-Dog" types. But a GREAT song regardless.
I just read that Stephen reads the comments on his UA-cam videos, so everybody say hi Stephen! :)
Malkmus is pure genius.
God, 17 years ago? Still listening to these songs. BTW.. Loved the Jicks...
This is from 2001, so 23 years ago as of 2024
I love how, no matter what song, whenever he does it live, it sounds so very different from the actual record
This is one of my favorite songs!!!!!
Man what a great and epic member of society. He seems like the most laid back guy ever, and he makes brilliant music. Keep it up Malkmus!!!
very good performance
Anyone else anxiously await this and cram a recordable tape from the camcorder in to your TV/VHS combo unit and treasure the recording ?
artie fufkin rocking out on the piano!!
paul schaeffer in spinal tap: possibly the best cameo ever.
I love this performance. Stephen Malkmus ftw!
Paul Shaffer was killing it
lol
oh he is so inspiring. love dragonfly pie, and hotscoth willie is epic. malkmus its gonna be, for the rest of my life
Malkmus' solo stuff is great! It's more mature for sure, but still amazing.
i love him so so much
Love the little jump at 1:00
Stephen Malkmus is a deity!
May 18th: Pavement in Belgium!
Thomas Callaerts saw the jicks in Cleveland 2018..amazing
Such a great performance. I actually remember waiting and watching this live, April 10th, 2001 if I remember correctly... which is sad, kind of?😕
***** Maybe April 1? I've got a poster in my hallway with the tour dates on it, and March 30 he played in NYC, with a day off on April 1.
Not sad, happy!
I was 17 and had just discovered pavement. Was so stoked about this that I sat up and recorded it to VHS.
Not sad at all.
I saw the band play at the Roxy Roller Rink around this time. Bob Nastanovic was the tour manager and jumped onstage.

Thurston Moore looks great here
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's so good live.
Listening to SM has the ability to make you smarter.
similar melody to "say yes" by elliott smith
:o really? i didnt know this
Yeah, and Portland.
wow, you're right -
The vocal melody in the verses is extremely similar to Say Yes. As far as taste in Smith goes, Malkmus's is superb (as is his taste in The Fall, Echo & the Bunnymen, Sonic Youth, etc, etc...)
And both make me recall the main chorus of 'Our House' by CSN&Y.
What a tune.
Can someone upload the Jicks playing "Houston Hades" on Letterman in 2014? Thanks.
I can't get used to him standing front and center.
Front and center, we all sit
@@lukedguy1253 ... in a stadium of our own devising
Front and center is the title of his next album
ha! Paul seemed to be having fun
it is a virtually identical melody to "say yes" by smith. still a good tune, that shit happens all the time
omfg this is so good.
Is that a Les Paul with Jazzmaster pickups? They look longer and thinner than p90’s.
@nilbog44 I am a huge fan of Pavement, and there are some songs that i find awesome on this album. Just platform blues for an exemple. Jonny greenwood harmonica, stephen's voice "à la" lou reed and this guitar work. Oh damn, I love this song so much.
That had a great deal of rad-osity to it. My fave SM album, too, although the last one comes close (Hopscotch Willie is awesome)
How often does Letterman praise an artist/band before they even play?
He listened to the album.
Hes done it a decent few times
(Not a brag...) I've watched 90% of Late Show episodes and Letterman would usually talk to the drummer or not say much. He would say "don't neglect your studies" if he didn't enjoy a song often. Why is Pavement or SM not more famous?
Cause Stephen's not the kind of guy to play the record industry's game.
They suck
We are keeping a secret
Stephen has some killer moves..
Didn't find this company, could you direct me? Reading in a forum, people mentioned the Lovetone Big Cheese Fuzz pedal, and by the pics, really seems that's the pedal.

I'm not gay but I fucking love this man. I'd almost switch teams for him. Take that as praise.
Paul Shaffer killing it!
@Andysays the first line he say... "she shakes a man". I don't think it hurts the performance. I think true musicians always improv and keep things loose, it sounds better. And this is a great song. Thanks for the post!
Think he might just be saying "She dates." That's what I hear, anyway
jeez best is a matter of preference... The first cd I eved purchased was brighten. We were at a cd shop in harvard, simply and amazing record and the best imo
I got a totally different vibe from the song than happy. It's actually a sad song in my opinion.
very nice.
GENIUS - the grace kelly of indie -
That was actually pretty rad.
The first line is vaguely similar, not extremely similar. Like singing "I'm in love ... of a girl" . And the rest of the lines in the melody really aren't that similar. But, I love both of the songs ... they're both doing something right.
Yeah, I noticed :) a 5 minute search in google solved that hehe. It's been a while I don't listen to SM, but the fuzz tone in this video sure is good!
that's that lovetone Big Cheese
Very wierd.. I am a big Elliott Smith fan and thought that Malkmus sounded a lot like Elliott before knowing that they were from the same place. Must be the Portland air :)
(what's so funny 'bout) portland based singer songwriter?
It's twinged with a profound sadness, isn't it?
That was rad
Anyone knows what fuzz pedal is he using there? RAD!
lovetone big cheese, good luck finding an original for under $800, but jhs has started cloning them
@Andysays
Yeah the first one was good. I didn't like the second one until more recently. It's got some really epic songs on there and is well worth giving another chance.
this vid is rad
Power stance
Curte som, Binho?
great hair cut he has
He's just a boy with a new haircut. And that's a pretty nice haircut.
no pick?! fuckin crazy!
@AKALucifer
Na, Malkus ad-libs lyrics.
Almost every time he sings a song, it’s different. Either musically, or lyrically
better than the album version in my opinion
cmon man the album version is sweet
anything with malkmus in is sweet especially space ghost theme part 2
Luca Vincent true that
@dashofchutmeg Who's still around the morning after..
Does malkmus not play with a pick?
patagonianratz That's correct.
did he play with one in pavement though? i always thought he did...
he never finger picked during Pavement. but occasionally now
He goes back and forth. I saw a performance where he had double sided tape and he'd stick the pic there and grab it when he needed it. He's pretty slick about it, you almost don't notice. Interesting that he uses the pick more when playing rhythm and fingers solos.
It's Alex Chilton
Real emotional trash is by far the best thing he's done since Pavement
this song is about malkmus breaking up with pavement. he's a little sick about it but he also sings LET ME OUT OF HERE!!!
The Hook is about the same situation if I recall.

@luyendao Pavement is 5. Malkmus is 1 (and a great one at that, there's no denying). Spiral Stairs, Bob, Mark and Steve...couldn't have been a Pavement without them.
Pavement had more control over their sound, and they sounded near-perfect :p Malkmus is still great though
I cant hear any fluffed lines =/

@AKALucifer No.. epic coolness!
Joanna Bolme - the same one he has now.

He said "Steven" Malkmus...

edit: rad
Sorry but "ph" (= "f") doesn't sound like "v"
@luyendao are you kidding me. don't get me wrong malkmus is amazing but pavement the band would be nothing without nastanovich and scott kannenburg.
@luyendao
Pavement were barely a band. They lived in different cities, never practised, never wrote together, and just used to meet up once a year to record/tour.
Really was just Malkmus and a backing band. Just like this.
Why it sounds exactly the same
I dunno but each pavement's video on yt is as well sooo lo-fi. Pity.

@putdownan8dude Eh, more like a 70's Deluxe.
Terror Twilight is wonderful. It's the second best after slanted and enchanted. Fact.

He says "she" instead of "he" every once in a while, but other that that, there are no flubs.
@sushilll111 i disagree
This song bums me out. I've known "Jenny" types, and I've loved two in my life. . . ahahah, and they've left me for "Ess-Dog" types.
But a GREAT song regardless.
Wow, that's almost the exact same riff as Spit of a Stranger, but sped up. :/
