finally malkmus getting some recognition for his incredible range of tones. one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. the solo in Witch Mountain Bridge from the album Pig Lib proves he's the next Tom Verlaine.
Contemplating about toys - yeah fun. Stephen Malkmus is one of the rare musicians who has accumulated insights and stay "young" simultaneously. Hence still going strong.
This is great bc Malkmus is someone who doesn't care for gear culture--just wants to play and not get caught up in GAS. I LOVE pedals (prob too much), but this is a good reminder for me (like is his style of music) to not take gear too seriously. It's not about collecting all the pedals or what has germanium diodes blah blah blah. When it comes down it, play the music that matters to you. Gear can get you there, yea, but it's mostly the ideas and persistence of the creative process that'll really make the difference IMO.
Profound words indeed! He's a nice guy and pavement was and is amazing, especially live ( seen em twice in the nineties and in the 2000s when I was monitor engineer at Paradiso Amsterdam and they played their "rerun") , not superfond of the Jicks but hey thats taste. I record my band Wondertrees with his live tech Remko Schouten at Ijland studio Amsterdam. He and his team are super nice as well and dear friends. Thanks and good luck midstep!
He and I came from a time when you used 2-3 pedals at most. We never heard of pedal boards. It was guitar-> distortion-> delay-> amp. If you were fancy you used a chorus or flanger :)
Really? This guy just jumped on the bandwagon, the right scene at the right time. And he just kept talking about other bands, on and on. Live he’s really great tho.
awe Andy Wallace's daughter was my housemate in astoria...love hearing him name checked esp in regards go Malkmus Pavemnt and cobain who Andy loved.....as it happens i also went ot Uva with Pavement but anyway Andy Wallace deserves as Malkmus alludes to and gives so much credit for so much great and varied music thanks! - SJOCOR
Man, you have got a great thing going on in your channel. Stephen Malkmus...I was just listening to his first solo album after Pavement with my wife and our 2 daughters (13 and 10) while driving out to the grandparents for Easter dinner...still holds up (it’s no Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, but what is?). Really appreciate your channel, man. Thanks to the management at EarthQuaker for creating and sharing this!
Why am I such a fan of him?.. I remember seeing a picture of him in Rolling Stone 10 years ago and was like I like him. Pavement was really one of those background bands of the mid 90s that made you say music is really great right now. What happened? I remember by 2000 being so angry and cynically disgusted with what I was hearing on the radio.. there was a brief moment around 94 when almost everything was good.
I love the editing on this video. What you could’ve done was when he says names of effects, apply the effect to the audio kinda like you did with the part of the video where he says “tremolo” you put a tremolo on the audio.
if you don't make a t shirt out of the pedal lifestyle quote you are missing out! (I'll take one for free for coming up with the idea... proud owner of Hummingbird, Dispatch Master and Swiss Things) The asterisk corrections are my favorite part. I love EQD pedals and had no idea how great the channel was. Awesomesauce
It made total sense to me to see that he has the same Dispatch Master pedal that I ended up going with. But yeah, it's more of a "fix what your amp can't do right" sort of pedal for me. What a hilariously under-informed person to do this kind of video. I love Steve. These pedals seem cool. I'm not sure what the point of this was besides fun though. Maybe don't take your rig so seriously? There are lots of ways to think about pedals? Urgh. He kept talking about fuzz and then didn't demo a fuzz pedal. What does the Palisades pedal even do? I think my internet is broken. Thumbs up.
Malkamus is hilarious. He just seems so bewildered by pedals and gears. You'd swear he didn't do it for a living.
"it's like getting a tattoo...that you can get removed really easily."
Wtf? Hahaha!
they def come from a different place than some succesful artists thank the godessssss
Putting him saying "tremolo" through a tremolo is genius : )
I love that also.
It’s the little things.
SM couldn't give a fuck if he tried... still the coolest person to have survived the 90s
So much style that it's wasted
finally malkmus getting some recognition for his incredible range of tones. one of the most underrated guitarists of all time. the solo in Witch Mountain Bridge from the album Pig Lib proves he's the next Tom Verlaine.
I've always thought his playing was very Verlaine-ish! I'm glad someone else thinks so. :)
Pavement is on one hand so revered and on the other insanely underrated
Contemplating about toys - yeah fun. Stephen Malkmus is one of the rare musicians who has accumulated insights and stay "young" simultaneously. Hence still going strong.
king of perfect sound forever
Malkmus needs a signature twin preamp pedal, called Two States (north and south, baby).
40 million daggers
that's a spiral stairs song though
Underrated guitarist, especially on his solo record or w/ the Jicks, hilarious pedal insight
This is great bc Malkmus is someone who doesn't care for gear culture--just wants to play and not get caught up in GAS. best non sequitur pedal review goes to Malkmus, hands down
I'll watch anything with Malkmus present
He and I came from a time when you used 2-3 pedals at most. We never heard of pedal boards. It was guitar-> distortion-> delay-> amp. If you were fancy you used a chorus or flanger :)
5:34 great job advocating for pedals lol u did earthquaker a solid
If there's a better specimen of the ultimate Gen-X'er out there, I'd like to know.
Really? This guy just jumped on the bandwagon, the right scene at the right time. And he just kept talking about other bands, on and on. Live he’s really great tho.
That carefully cultivated aloofness that screams "I am a product of the nineties".
Lou Barlow
allrain this guy built the bandwagon and had no idea anyone was hitching a ride
Gene Ween

How is he 17 yrs old and 50 yrs old at the same time
Idk but I love It
I was relieved tonight that my hero was as high as I was when I heard this
Nice demo with one of my favorite musicians! keep it up
"I don't think Kurt Cobain made that choice, I could be wrong " - I don't why I found that so funny
It's like SM is the Jack Benny of our era.
He found the most difficult way to play the easiest song (come as you are)
He's playing drop tuning
thats my life as an untrained guitar player
i like that he doesn't count it as a pedal if it's always on, gonna adopt that philosophy to clear up space on my mental board
Thanks a lot for Malkmus, he is genius! It would be great to see J Mascis here!
Definitely 👍

thank YOU for watching! Glad you dig it
"So it's a booster and different volumes of voices." Sold!
He plays the guitar like a fuckin everyday dude and he’s an inspiration for us lol
Perfect Stoned Forever
God, this video couldn’t be more up my alley if it was parked behind my house.

The subtle corr3ctions in the bottom left are hilarious
This is brilliant, love the man!
Beautiful Squidward
Pretty cool that he uses the Dispatch Master!
Big fan of The Malk!
everyone should drink a glass of Malk everyday.
Gotta love The Malk.
this kid is the most 90’s kid ever
A shitload of knobs is pretty accurate 😂😂
"made famous by Deerhoof!" yes!!
uglymousanova that right there made me grin
4:45 like a diamond j drive, a t rex delay, and a fuzz factory... his actual board
"sounds like an Andy Wallace choice"
....
"Sea Machine!..."
This is becoming my favorite channel
great! thanks for watching!
Pavement was great and all but I completely forgot about them over the last 10 years. time to dig back into my CD collection.
might i recommend Out of Reaches and Real Emotional Trash from one of his albums with the Jicks
I wish i could have a CD collection. I've lost em over the years of being a vagabond
Malkmus is is a monster guitarist, and the king of creative understatements, check out 1% Of One off Pig Lib
I’ll miss pavement forever...
‘She told me not to’ use those settings
Best Episode of (The Name Of This Show) available! Even in 2023, when I WROTE THIS.
I love the editing on this video.

that smile
This is awesome! It's like y'all read my mind...
SM ist rad.
Hearing the "Bit Commander"; I thought of Beck.
Do some sonic youth please!!!
"Palisades...it's uh...got a shitload of knobs on it..."
i hope that’s not trouble for marc
Give our streets to california, do you? shots fired, Steve.
Or a Gordie Walker choice¿?
Love that SM still doesn't use a pedal board 30 years into his professional career. Keep it simple
Best notification ever
Great to see Steve+EQD 🐙☠️
i love my Palisades
This guy is straight up goofy. You'd swear he didn't know what a big deal he is.
Funny how they constantly correct him in text but they can’t spell dudes name wright
are Steven Malkmus and Steven Drozed the same guy ?
Dror Waserman Seriously 😂😂
They look and act like they could be brothers lol
Doesnt Malkmus use the Crowther Hotcake?
yeah and lovetone pedals (which are super rare)
Bit Commander sounds like a less schizophrenic Blue Box.
Anyone know if the tracking is better than the original MXR?
That just sounds/nice.
pedals are like temp tattoos
Can never have enough!
3:50
Actually its stephen not Steve XD
Chrome?!?! Man, haven't heard anyone mention Chrome for something like 30, almost 40 years!!!! Yikes!!
They got mentioned a lot when Slanted and Enchanted first dropped, as Malk was championing them and The Fall a lot in those days.
I love Chrome!

Clicked on this just because of pavement.
just gave this comment a thumbs up because of you
Never clicked on something so fast #first
Same!

Someone buy this man a new pair of sneaks!
Hell yeahhhhh
#gotashitloadofknobsonit 😁 what more do you need to know? 🤣🤣
Mentions expensive equipment and they cut to a shot of the Benson amp, lol.
Lmao. oh Stephen...
Successfully mutilates Come As You Are, just like every other chorus pedal user on UA-cam 🤣
When I think of chorus? I think "Gordie Walker" of Killing Joke!🎸🎹🎧💫😵👌👍✋🙏✌
is this a regular mustang? looks bigger. or maybe I should drag my lazy ass outta bed and put on my glasses...
The 1970's were a strange time for Fender.
Yussssssssssss
So sick of these over-polished gear reviewers like this guy
Greenpoint Stock you’re joking right?
Furst
he kinda seems clueless lmao and his playing was wack. nice i dig it
Malk's may be a guitar god, but his sneaker game is ... weak
