2:17 That's not Bob Nastanovich, that's Steve West. Nastanovich is the one smiling in the back.
I've seen Pavement live 2 times (1997, 2010) and Malkmus solo 5 times (2005, 2008, 2011, 2015, 2018). Hoping to see the Pavement reunion 2022. I've seen Mark Ibold in NYC twice in my life. The first time at a Battles show at Central Park Summerstage. I started talking to him nonchalantly and then asked him about where the other guys were, specially Stephen. He kinda bummed said that Stephen was doing well on his own and did not need them. That was 2008. Two summers later I would see the reformed Pavement play their reunion shows on that exact same place.
BTW, god bless Malkmus and the boys. They are the soundtrack to my life. From my youth when I discovered them at 14 until the present day where I play Malkmus solo albums for my daughter in the car. I still remember my mother when I was a teen once showing me an article on the New York Times and saying hey it's about that band you like. It called Malkmus the "slacker prince of indie rock". Yup. Then and now it is true.

I saw Pavement once in 96 at the Summersault festival Held at the Gold Coast in Queensland AU. One of the top tier group of killer lineups ive ever had the privilege to attend. They joined Rancid, The Amps(Kim Deal's other group that wasn't Pixies or the Breeders), Sonic Youth, Foo Fighters(It was their first tour), Beck, and The Beastie Boys touring Ill Communication with Hurricane and Money Mark in tow. I attended Primaily for Pavement, Back and the Beasties, All of womb killed it, tho, Pavement, having so many members, looked crowded and there was clearly tension amongst the ranks.
I understand why Stephan made that sentiment regarding not needing them back then. He DID do well on his own. And personally, I'm a much bigger fan of his solo and Jicks material than I am Pavement. Not taking away from the huge impact and significantce they had on the LoFi scene, and Crooked Rain is one of the most important albums of its time and of my youth. But it ran its course, and any song writer would find it difficult not to stagnate in a band with so many members and egos working with such significant expectations to remain true to "being pavement". Pavement was their day job and their career. Stephen is a genius wrong writing artist who was desperate to evolve his craft.
I saw Stephen twice. On his first solo tour and saw Squarepusher directly after his set, and when he announced his final track he encouraged the audience to start making their way to the stage he was performing on rather than listening to his set closer because it was at the opposite end of the site and he didn’t want anyone to miss any of it. Which made my day. I was there for Him and Squarepusher and the rest of the line up sucked, so after waiting all day ignoring a whole heap of crap bands, hearing my number two act acknowledge and support my number one act was a sweet cherry on top to an otherwise boring and dull festival.
Second time was on the Pig Lib tour(My personal favourite release. Water and. Seat and (Do Not Feed)The Oyster are two of my all-time favourite songs.) Case in point, Those tracks just wouldn't have worked with Pavement. And especially his first release. JoJo'S Jacket(another all time favourite), The Hook, Jenny and the ess Dog, in fact the entire release, retained they cynicism and satire of Pavement, yet was just as much a love letter to the pop music zeitgeist.
Leaving Pavement freed him from the associated snobbery and elitism that comes with being in a cool af Indi band who wore the zero fucks given attitude on their sleeves. And of course they did. They were kids when they joined. But he started to wear himself on his sleeve when he grew up a bit, and you can tell by his material, and by his live performances, hes happier and more content. And his love and passion for his art oozes from every pour for every second of. his time on stage. That energy was absent when I sw Pavement. Unfortunately I missed the reformation tour. I was a FT dad by the time they did. I wish I caught them tho. He was being sincere when he said he didn't need them. But he loves them like brothers and he wouldn't have gotten to the stage where he was doing well enough on his own not to need them without them. And he's always known that and has never taken that for granted. And hearing that they weren't needed would've stung for the boys when he said it. But they knew it themselves too. Just hearing it out loud makes it a confirmed reality. Just like any break up or divorce, you all know its over deep down, but reality hitting home always sucks. I get the feeling they might've performed with a similar enthusiasm to when they were starting out. In hindsight, It kinda surprises me they lasted another 3 years after I saw them. Goes to show they were all giving it their all to make it work....
But, hey, I still haven't lost all hope for the possibility of some new official Pavement material one day. If At the Drive In can do it, anybody can.....

The first time I heard Pavement I was sitting in a car in the parking lot of my junior college smoking a joint with my buddy. It was 1995 and Wowee Zowee had just came out. It completely changed my musical taste in a split second. They completely fit my personality and I felt like they were representing me. I’ve seen them every time they played Dallas since 1995. And met Stephen Malkmus a couple of times. If you like Pavement you should definitely look into the Silver Jews. Good stuff!

I honestly think in a few years Pavement is going to be for the culture something similar to The Velvet Underground. I'm serious.
The Velvet Underground remained quite unknown and overshadowed by the famous bands of the 60's (The Beatles, The Stones, etc), but as time went on, TVU gained a cult status and then managed to greatly influence the people who listened to them. Many ended up forming their own bands after hearing The Velvet Underground.
Pavement is a similar case. It's not that they were totally unknown, but they didn't come close to reaching the popularity of Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice In Chains, etc. I mean, they didn't even reach the popularity of Sonic Youth.
I've always believed that when a band is good, special, authentic and has good songs, it's just a matter of time passing for society to start recognizing them. Pavement will be given the recognition it deserves as time goes by.

I saw Pavement live on their final pre-breakup tour, Malkmus & Jicks on their first tour, and Silver Jews on their final tour. Just kinda lucked out in those regards, all at the same venue (40 watt), one of the perks of growing up in a famous college rock town like Athens, which I never knew how much I'd miss til I moved out of state. That said, I never heard Pavement on the radio (other than the local college radio station once or twice) and I don't remember them from MTV either. Thankfully somebody put a Matador CD sampler in the free bin at Wuxtry records which turned me onto a handful of bands I'd go onto dig too, from JSBX to Chavez. I was a pretty mainstream 90s alt rock normie, but even though my friends and I were underage (which nobody cared much about pre-Columbine) we started going to a lot of shows around late 95 which opened our eyes and ears to more genres. I still think of college guitar rock when I hear the term "indie rock," something like the Sebadoh song... as opposed to the more melodic emo trash that took over the term by the early to mid aughts. Pavement is probably one of my top ten favorite bands of all time, but most of my friends more tolerated than loved em, a couple dug it almost as much as me, but most definitely didn't.

Fun fact: Steve West almost ran over me and my friend somewhere around 1983 on our skateboards when I was about 10. It wasn't his fault; we were 2 punk little kids coming out from behind a parked car not looking where we were going and he couldn't see us as he drove up the hill in front of his house. I grew up just around the corner from him- we used to sit outside of his house on the curb at the corner, smoke Marlboros and listen to his first(?) band Stalingrad practice, then later another band, Contoocook Line. I didn't even know he was in Pavement until he had been in the band a few years. Funny, Steve and another drummer I knew well and my best friend who was a drummer and I all grew up within about 3 blocks of each other, which is probably the main reason I started playing drums at age 13. Saw them in 90's at Ritz in Boston and lollapalooza tour at Randle Island in NY. Awesome shows. Then Steve's Jicx band in Manhattan once. Great one too. He stopped and talked to the audience quite a bit. The female bass player kicked ass. Hopefully will see Pavement again soon 🙏

Great video. I’m surprised you didn’t mention the influence of The Fall in their sound (particularly on Slanted). The debacle with Mark E Smith from The Fall (unfairly) dismissing Pavement as rip off merchants might me worth a video of its own, I’d say.

Part of the greatness of Pavement is not just the amount of material they put out in 10 years, but that nobody really knows the sum total of all of it. There are 2 albums not even mentioned in this video, for starters.

NO NO NO. When you first mentioned Bob Nastonivich, in the band pic you highlighted the drummer Steve West (who didnt join til 2nd album) PLUS you completely skip over Malkmus and Nastonivich’s FIRST group with David Berman The Silver Jews. Hugely important and influential. Cmon man.
