    I think it's important to mention that the vocoder doesn't just drive the carrier sound with the source sound's amplitude, but also applies an EQ curve to the carrier sound based on the frequency profile of the source sound. This is why speaking into a vocoder results in speech that is still legible; the formants of your vowels and noisiness of your consonants are also applied to the carrier sound, along with the envelope. The frequency profile is generated by an FFT whose resolution you can control with the number of bands on the vocoder. More bands results in a more accurate mimicking of the frequency profile of your voice.

    • @EDMProd
      @EDMProd  Рік тому +5

      Correct! There's a whole bunch of things happening behind the scenes with the eq bands. That being said I always have to choose which content is worth putting into each one of these videos, I often try to prioritize application and interesting uses of the device over the nitty-gritty of how the algorithm works, but you're totally right! That stuff is very interesting to me also! Good teaching in my opinion is trying to find the right balance of content and application

      So is it safe to say that vocoding is the same as resynthesis? Does Abletone have any instrumenents capable of resynthesis?

    The last part where you gave the pads some rhythm was pure magic! Thank you for the insight and inspiration!

  • @mil3ston3s
    @mil3ston3s 7 місяців тому

    It's not "replacing" it with the pure amplitude, since it maintains the illusion of syllabic information-it keeps the formant intact as well.

    Envelope follower mapped to a utility's gain would be a good choice for making stagnant sounds like pads have more rhythm

    I don't have Ableton but I have an idea.
    What if you do some parallel processing? Imagine a vocal with delay. make the vocal sound untouched but make its delays sound vocodey, or vocoded.

    How did you get hearing your voice throw voice coder live at 1:12 ? Without recording the voice and midi's from the synth?
    I could get it to work only after recording my voice and setting MIDI for for the carrier synth.
    Great vid! Gonna play around with it
    Thanks

    • @EDMProd
      @EDMProd  Рік тому

      Okay so I was essentially doing it all live! I had the vocoder getting information from the synth on another track, and whilst I was speaking I was playing chords on my keyboard.
      The vocoder will 'do its thang' on any audio information that comes through it right? So it doesn't really matter whether the audio is live or recorded, it's going to do the same thing either way.
      BUT if you don't have midi notes triggering the vocoder, it won't do anything, so try arming both tracks and playing the midi notes whilst you speak, or recording the midi notes first then speaking as ableton plays them. Hope this makes sense!
