Cheren and Bianca are my favorite rivals in the series. In Black and White, the player is actually meant to be around 15 or 16 as opposed to 10 or 11 like the other protagonists. This means the rivals are at the same age. Given that Cheren goes into an existential crisis on why he wants to be a strong trainer, and Bianca having a personal crisis of wanting to continue as a trainer at all, it makes them both unique from other rivals. They’re both teenagers trying to figure out what paths they want to take in life, something that’s very relatable for a lot of teens and young adults. Their arcs are simple enough for a kid to understand, but also resonate with many longtime fans that stuck around. It felt like Pokémon was growing up with its fans.
Agreed, also why I like Walley, even though your character is starting out for the 1st time, you as the player are experienced. You're helping Walley a nervous shy kid that keeps to himself, feels like an outcast, making him relatable especially for kids going into being teens, all your friends saying oh Pokemon's for babies it's not cool. You're the experienced trainer, helping him come out of his shell, which shapes him into a strong and worthy rival, this is why Walley is one of my favorite if not my favorite friendly rival. Also May from the anime felt like that for Ash, she's starting out, he's experienced... and still learning (yes Ash, treeko the green tree gecko pokemon with a plant for a tail is TOTALLY a water type), which is one reason I liked that season.
Gladion & Lillie actually DO try to talk! When on the Second island she's planning on meeting up with "someone" at the hotel near where you fight Sins & Dexio. If you meet up with her, she Tells you she got mixed up when she saw Team Skull and apparently missed the Meeting. Which is hinting at Gladion cause you met him when he's working for Team Skull.
@@yan13502 That doesn't make sense, she talks about the Hotel, but Burnet lives at the Lab on the 2nd island, which Lillie does know, next time you see her after that, she's infront of the Lab instead.
Actually, Sneasel evolves into Weavile by leveling up at night while holding a Razor Claw. In the manga, however, Silver's special skill is trade evolution, giving him the title of "Exchanger", and he does have a lot of Pokémon who evolve through trade.
Im glad Trace isn't even on here. Anyone who admits to being so nice that they go easy on you in the Champion title match doesn't deserve to be called a rival
Trace is the epitome of Gamefreak admitting that they don't need to try and challenge the player or to have anything which would make for an engaging journey - filled with strife and challenge. Instead, everything is just handed to the player because they're the super special protagonist-sama. They that they can just repackage the same formula with shinny graphics and a few appealing character designs because that is what sells. I am not one of those Gen-wunnars but the latest gens of pokemon are not engaging or challenging. Is there a reason to care, when the whole thing is just a slow theme park ride, through set pieces? Is there not something more to this series?
He did like one cool thing in where he put that cubone on his team after facing its mother in the lavender town tower, but yeah other than that he’s pretty lame
Well well well. It's one of the guys who likes commenting everywhere on UA-cam. I should of guessed you would comment on one of Josh's videos sooner or later.
@@HayLeesHomeMade ORAS is a major glow up from bare bones RSE, as good as those were. Let's be honest, ORAS is how you do a proper remake of not just a game, but that game's story. (Glares murderously at a certain recent game that flaunts being a "remake")
I like what they tried to do with the Gen 6 rivals, showing other ways to enjoy being a trainer other than trying to become Champion, it's just they seemed to give up with it really early. It's not even that we only battle them a couple times and their teams always suck it's that they never make any apparent progress in their stated goals. Tierno should have been shown gathering up is dance team and improving as he goes. Trevor should have had a ton of info to share and his bayttles should ahve shown off the variety of the pokemon he's captured since he wanted to fill up his pokedex. Shauna should have had something to do. Instead it's nothing, they just make the same generic comments about their interests each time and basically just waste everyone's time.
They also just made a really bad introduction. Maybe if they had sprinkled them throughout the game. Having it be a group that gradually get's together it would have been better. Instead you're just suddenly part of this group that you don't know and don't act or look very interesting in a cutscene that really drags on and on when really you just want to get your Pokémon already. I normally really like having a shiny for my starter but the intro cutscene was so dreadfully long I gave up after 10 tries. They should have done it like Gen 5 did where Bianca's backstory is set up but not gone into detail and that doesn't come until the 4th gym.
I feel like they wanted to emulate the anime's "traveling companions with different dreams" schtick but really fumbled the bag on implementation. Shauna actually is alright enough for this, though do wish she was a bit stronger as a battler (not insane but at least have her fully evolve her starter and pull up with a decent number of pokemon) and her arc was more prevalent. The other 2 as they are in the games are wastes of space which sucks cause Trevor's pokedex goal could've had a lot of potential since that's the 2nd half of what makes pokemon pokemon aside from the league stuff. Funny enough, though they AREN'T traveling companions in the anime, they are implemented as rivals much more efficiently there which is hilarious. Tierno's dancing thing is cleverly implemented in his battle style making him a formidable opponent Ash actually learns from and Shauna helps Serena's development and is a rival in pokemon showcases and a strong battler in her own right. Trevor i don't remember much of still though. Guess they really were made to be characters in the anime at heart.
Ironically enough, the anime of X and Y did this better, as we see Tierno's danve battle style, and episodes dedicated to Trevor's journey to have a picture of every Pokemon in the world. It's funny, since I feel the XY Anime was a lot better than the game, but it's the inverse for Black and White, were I mildly enjoyed the anime, but loved games.
I think my favorite rival is either silver or blue. Silver legit starts off as probably the biggest jerk and is just so edgy that he cuts himself but his backstory really adds a lot to why he acts the way he does and his redemption arc in the post game of heartgold and soul silver really makes adds to his character. He's also the son of Giovanni. And is theorized to be the brother of Mars from pearl and his mother is theorized to he ariana from team rocket which would he interesting.
Even without the remakes postgame you can kinda see his the beginning of his growth at victory road. he's challenging you one last time because he needs answers. He's beaten nearly everyone that stands before him, except for Lance, and you. And he already is beginning to see why, but he needs to confirm it. After he does, he starts a new journey, one of self reflection and where he treats his pokemon how they should be.
I like how no one in chat said anything about Marnie being in B tier while she geeks out about her, that was nice. Also she forgot about Trace from Pokémon Let's Go, but then again no one barely remember's him anyways. Regardless this was a great tier list Aria.❤
Trace is bottom tier. Below bottom tier. He's the worst rival of all time. I will never forgive him for how shallow he made my victory feel. Seriously, his whole arc was that he would always lose to you because he holds back. Who could ever feel happy knowing they won under those conditions?
Trace likely F boy dorsnt even have a reason to exist and is the worst traits if the friendly rivals combined and put onto someone who is also a coward. N likely very high because come on, its N. And avwry and Klaara, well i dunno
Trace: F Tier. (Trace WHO? Yeah, the Let's Go Rival is forgettable...) N: A tier at least, like I said in my own post. But I would rank him S. Klara/Avery: Possibly C tier. Good teams but godawful characterizations.
@@gamemasteranthony2756 Eh, i give klara and avery a b. Theyre like one of the only characters in pokemon who actually try to cheat. One of them does it better (klara, toxic spikes are like 50x better than psychic field) but still, a first.
@@chickenman461 in the pokespe manga no. Sneasel was silvers first ever Pokémon prior to being abducted from Giovanni. In fact the image that Aria uses was a panel from the manga specifically the HGSS arc when silver was searching for the arceus plates which he finishes quickly by having his wevile call upon a tribe of sneasel and wevile to expand their search (an action support by data from the Pokédex)
@@lunerblade13 Dude I was talking about the games, in HGSS Silver stole the Sneasel off the guy who gives Shuckle Edit: MB I'm dumb, didn't notice the manga thing
I think you were wrong about Silver's Weavile evolution, it just evolves with a Razor Claw. He does, however, have an Alakazam and Gengar, which are only evolved by trading, meaning he still needed to make a friend :) Also, small thing, but I love the Specialist music at the beginning and end. Your music tastes are great
Fun fact: in the manga Silver has the title of “the Exchanger” and during the GSC arc helped golds poliwhirl evolve into a politoad. and during the HGSS arc when he is looking for Giovanni comes across Green who gives him his rhydon (which does evolve thanks to Green learning the method from “the secrets of the earth” a book Giovanni wrote about ground Pokémon) to borrow because silvers final Pokémon an ursarang is with Giovanni due to silver during the FRLG arc ordering his ursarang to take Giovanni to one of silvers safe houses.
He really kind of falls into a grey zone, he's not technically a rival and ghetsis is the true leader of team plasma, he's also the champion you fight to beat the game but Alder is who everyone considers for rankings. He does a lot for the games and is probably one of the best characters in pokemon but with how many things he does at once I guess it can be hard to put him firmly in a category
Hop is underrated due not only to his reactions to losing but also majorly to his development in the post-game. After losing in the championship tournament, he helps you solve some lingering problems then after catching a Legendary Pokemon realizes he wants to study Pokémon and becomes Sonia’s assistant. That’s the best rival development since Gary imo
See the problem with that though is he to overconfident. He's to arrogant. Yes he has reactions to losing, but his reactions to winning are so over the top making him annoying. Also the whole I need to be like my brother kind of kills the rival thing for me. It just shows he's weak willed and not himself. Yes he eventually forges his own path, but I mean he's still way to overconfident and his team still sucks. Even in post game. I agree with everything else your saying though.
Honestly I really like all 3 rivals in sword and shield. Personally what their teams are does not factor into my opinion of them its all personality for me and I think they all are great. Yes even Bede. Bede is an asshole but he is supposed to be and he actually changes and becomes better. Hop's arc about him losing his confidence is actually interesting. That was my problem with a lot of the rivals in the recent generations, things actually effect them and they change. So yeah galar has some fantastic rivals.
I agree. Hop's uncertainty shows well in his battles because each time you fight him he swapped out some of his pokemon. Bede was my favourite because his arrogance was the thing that lead to the chairman abandoning him, which left him lost until he was instructed by Opal. And Marnie...... she was cute but there wasn't much of a character arc(not that it was necessary).
I’m surprised she didn’t count N as a Rival. I found him more fitting for that role than Antagonist. And it brings up the duality point again. N wants the ideal of Pokémon living free and happy lives in harmony with humans; and you’re the truth that they already are and N is just letting himself be manipulated by his father into being something he’s not.
16:03 Weavile doesn't evolve with trade, it evolves when you level it up at night with a razor claw. Though it is canon Silver trades. That's how he evoled his haunter into a gengar.
I found the idea of multiple rivals quite interesting in X and Y. If is had been handled better with more interesting personalitys and strong Pokémon teams. It would have been fun if they all had interest in different parts of the Pokémon world.
It's kinda interesting if you compare with the anime because Serena and Shauna are essentially Pokémon coordinators there, Trevor is following more of a researcher and photographer role like in Pokémon Snap (funny that in the Sun and Moon games there is a photography thing there) and Tierno has that dance thing going for him which is way more usable in the anime for evasion and unpredictability though why only in the anime he has a Ludicolo is a mystery.
Bro, Aramau, you definitely should appear more often on Josh's channel! You're so hilarious and we're both PokeNerds and I can't help but go diwn memory lane during these videos. Dunno if you'll ever see this but hey, you're cool :D
Love how their presentation styles are so similar, I want to see a rant where both of them slams on some gaming topic, maybe bad story or crap game mechanism in a Pokémon game?
Ari, gonna have to correct you on one thing related to Silver: he doesn't actually have a Weavile in the Remakes. It's still a Sneasel. Also, Weavile doesn't need to be traded to get, just needs to level up at night with the Razor Claw held Item.
Barely made it for the premiere. Really excited for this as I loved Ari's first pokemon video on the channel. Plus this video will be a gift of sanity after a long day of school. Edit: This made my day. Thank you so much. I can't say a ton about all the rivals as I've only played Omega Ruby, Sun and Moon, Let's go Eevee, and Shield. I agreed with a lot of your points and definitely agreed on some of the best characters. Thanks for making me smile. Looking forward to more of these.
I would just like to point out that if you look at Bede's signature on his trainer card, you can make out what looks like is meant to spell "Beed", making me believe the canon pronunciation of his name is "Bead"
You know, I agree with Bede’s placement. When I battle him, I always saw him as the Sasuke Uchiha of a rival. Except instead of committing mass genocide, he kills Hop with words, making Hop be rather depressed. While I know that Hop can take care of himself, it does still feel bad when you see the happy-go-lucky guy go into a downward spiral of depression. Then you cheer him up by beating his ass in a Pokémon battle
Yeah. He was not annoying like Hop and he had way more presence than Marnie. Also, in the (bad) post game, he is the only person to actually demolish all three Dynamaxed Pokemon before you get there... by himself while Hop loses to one of the stupid twins. If he kept his Reuniclus and Gothitelle his full team would have been frightening as the psychics really screw up the poison types that beat Fairy. He really should have been a Fairy/Psychic Gym leader personally. If Raihan can have a bunch of non-dragon Pokemon as a Dragon trainer, Bede can have more than just Fairy. Just saying.
>Hop in C tier The council finds you- >Only this low due to his team being so mixed up all the time. -...It’s acceptable. That said, I do want to bring a possible defense for this. Hop keeps changing his team up just because he wants to try and find a winning combination for his team, after losing to you and ESPECIALLY Bede. He even benches his Wooloo just to try and find a good team. The Pokémon that has been with him from the start, even before his official starter. And the whole bad trainer thing actually does have a pay off with him deciding that he wants to instead help out Pokémon by being a professor instead of a traditional Pokémon trainer. In short, Hop is kind of a bait and switch of the standard Pokémon trainer.
I swear if that little wannabe poser is impressed that I know basic type advantages one more time... Not as bad as his brother, HATE that guy. He does not deserve that team. Guy has a Dragalpult but puts all his eggs into a played out Charazard?
Honestly he would of worked better in a pokemon ranger game. He doesn't want to traditional pokemon, but still help trainers. Easily would of worked in pokemon ranger.
Barry in Platinum will always be my favorite rival. His character development is subtle, but very strong when you notice it, he's not OVERLY friendly like Hau or the Kalos rivals, but is still made to feel like he's someone you're actually genuine friends with while he's also still very competitive with you and battles you often (in PLATINUM, NOT D/P/BD/SP), and by the end of the gym challenge, after you beat Volkner and are about to head off to the pokemon league, Barry comes up to you and you expect a battle, but nope, instead he outright admits that he knows he can't beat you just yet, and talks about how all this time, he's been trying to be like his dad, to be as strong as him, but after Lake Acquity where he failed to save Uxie, he realized that his method wasn't working, and then it hit him that he can't try to be like his dad, or be like Crasher Wake, because it wouldn't be fair to himself or his Pokémon. He has to be the best version of him, to truly become stronger, and after that, he toughens up a lot and eventually (after you fight the pokemon league 20 times) he becomes one of the top 3 trainers with the highest level pokemon (not counting that one gen 5 trade where the pokemon you trade has their level scale with the one you received) in the whole series, as the only 2 trainers with a higher level pokemon than him are Red in Heartgold and Soulsilver, and Cynthia's 2nd rematch in BD/SP.
I agree. In Gen 5 Liepard, and my female Unfezant were two of my starting team's aces due to their high-speed and surprising versatile movepool, in Gen 8 Liepard was one of my starting team's top Pokémon. And concerning Simisear one of my best Pokémon in my starting team in Black 1. And concerning my starting team in Y one of my top Pokémon was my female Pyroar Leona, and despite getting insulted by the "toxic competitive players" for using a "crappy Pokémon" Leona was basically my team's sweeper decent in Physical Attack, Physical Defense, Special Attack, and Special Defense yep, and was one of my two fastest Pokémon heck yeah and fun story during my Elite 4 battle against Malvia her final Pokémon was her own female Pyroar, so I decided to end the battle in a anime-esque fashion by finally giving my Blastoise Wave a much needed rest since he one-shotted the first 99% of Malvia's team and sending out Leona basically it was female Pyroar vs. female Pyroar and while Malvia's Pyroar was faster and used that speed to land some good damage to Leona bringing her HP into the red with a Critical Hit Fire Fang, thankfully Leona's decent Physical Defense allowed her to hang in there, and then in true anime fashion got me the winning OHKO come from behind win due to a Rivalry-boosted Hyper Voice. And yes I played as Calem, and yes I'm fully aware I nicknamed my female Litleo/Pyroar what is the French, Spanish, Italian word for Lioness. PS. Leona is the actual French, Spanish, Italian word for Lioness with the French spelling being Lyona.
@@derrickhaggard Strong Pokemon. Weak Pokemon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites.
hop is one of my favorite rivals of all time. he goes through one hell of a character arc. originally so set on beating his brother that he takes the starter that would beat the one his brother gets, he goes through a bunch of slowly onset doubt with the constant losses capping off with his loss to bede developing from doubt to a depression streak. he begins to try just about everything he can thing to remove himself from this rut ( hence the revolving team) losing sight of himself in the process. ending with him realizing that his approach was all wrong all along and that he should just be himself and have fun with his pokemon ( resulting in him returning to his original starter dubwool)
how original putting Blue there, also Barry is just annoying in any case how about a top tier Professor list? if I had to put one in S tier, I'd say Kukui the man be the big bro of Alola
I once heard about Wally's theme, "his theme is just a loop of a guitar" for which I just took up the volume and yelled "I can't hear you, this theme is amazing."
“Silver needed better closure.” I don’t know if I’d call it closure, but in Pokémon Masters EX, Silver is paired with Ho-Oh because Ho-Oh acknowledged Silver as a purehearted trainer after Silver chose to help Ethan and Valerie out against some goons over his own desire to be sync-paired with Ho-Oh. This is all despite the fact that Silver himself does not think he is purehearted, even with how much he has changed. Also, he kinda sorta helps N with his dad issues in the Ghetsis event.
Wow this video is really good! Thank you for bringing up their individual personalities, story progression and team balance Aramau. I'm happy with how the tier list was handled. Definitely better than most tier lists I've seen! I do have one-...well two questions. Forget friendly rivals as a concept, which characters were you able to vibe with and made you feel good to be around? As much as I like some personalities and team balance more than others I don't particularly vibe well with some of them. Namely Hugh, Hop, Hau, Gladion and (in no disrespect) Silver! Laser focus on the last two, I don't like the baggage! I can't vibe with them! And two: *where the frosted flakes is Trace and the DLC rivals!?"* Trace is an inoffensive cinnamon roll who deserves all my good vibes and Klara and Avery are some of the best antagonistic rivals and they couldn't be in the tier list!? Granted if they weren't in the tiermaker proper you could've edited them in! The video is well put together and I find myself agreeing with where and how they were ranked. But the lack of vibes and leaving out three key rivals. Am I mad? Of course but then who wouldn't be? But I'm more happy with the ranking of each character. Definitely better than most tier lists I've seen! In conclusion, nicely done and I can't wait to see more from you. Much love, @ThiffguyBA
I pretty much agree with all of these except for Wally. I'd put him in C-tier with May and Brenden since I never felt like Gen 3 had a rival. Besides, no rival of mine is gonna have less than 6 pokemon in their final battle.
@@JesusRamirez-eo7lc If you consider Wally just by his appearance in gen 3 then sure, but ORAS gives him so much character depth it easily makes him an S tier.
On that "nobody has 6 pokemon" note: I feel that in my soul, ESPECIALLY with other non important trainers. Most of them are just basically wild pokemon you cant catch really. Its been so bad recently that i actually started talking back to them when they "challenge" me like "Dude, you have a single mon, dont get on my nerves"
@@darianclark3980 He is. Though I do wonder how difficult he could be with better moves on his teams. But he does at least have some counters to one of his main weakness' on his team, which is smart.
A problem with Bruno for me is his team. In most of his Kanto fights, Gens 1 and 3, he uses 2 Onix. Not only is it not that strong by this point, but another reason it irks me is that looking at the Kanto Dex, he's the only one who could have a full team of his type.
At least we got some content for June since there's no countdowns this month, Josh just did a month talking about villain songs, he deserves it, unless he decides to throw a curveball and do a review
This was a fun video Aramau ^^ I recently got back into Let's Go Eevee and I love Blue aka Gary in the game, just encountered him after I took on Brock in Pewter City ^^ I think you should do a fairy pokemon tier list ^^ I love the fairy types since I started Pokemon Snap ^^
I made a rival for my fake region based on Germany. He is trying to learn to stand up for himself and he gets a Pokémon to defend himself from bullies. His movesets get more aggressive as you go on.
Tbh I feel like Hop being so low cuz of his teams to be kind of contradictory when his character arc was praised. This constantly shifting and sometimes ineffective teams are a major aspect of said arc. In an attempt to beat you and Bede, he gets insecure and constantly shifts his teams. This even leads to him eventually deciding to no longer even be a trainer, going to be an assistant for Sonia. It’s a major aspect of his arc.
I feel like Hop and Hugh both need to be way higher but other than that I completely agree. The important thing is that more people are recognizing the undeniable fact that the gen 6 rivals belong in the trash.
To me _Ash’s best Rival_ is now and will always be Paul from the Diamond and Pearl series, someone once described him as a “representation of us as players”, and even when he was being a jerk he was still waaay more likeable than Gary! Oh wait, you mean in-game Rivals? Can’t wait to see how Mrs Scorcher ranks them! Love you Aramau (thanks for letting your lady drive the Channel today Josh!) 💙🐱💙
Surprised N isn't anywhere on this list. Sure, he's also a main antagonist and not a rival in a traditional sense, but he's still worth talking about as such
“Everyone’s least favorite, Bede” Tbh even though I liked almost all characters from sword and shield (just not Swordward, Shieldbert, and Chairman Rose), Bede was my favorite from that game
Ugh, that's misunderstanding what a rival is supposed to be. A rivalry isn't defined by one person being better than the other and pushing the weaker person to improve (even though that's how the series as a whole likes to portray it) but rather by the two being more or less on equal footing, with BOTH of them pushing each other to become better. People NEED to realize that the word "rival" is typically defined as being of comparable ability; if one of the two is clearly better than the other, than they do NOT rival each other in the normal sense of the word. As I already stated, the anime likes to portray rivalries as one being noticeably stronger than the other, with probably the best example of this being in the gen4 anime, with Ash's rivalry vs Paul, and Dawn's rivalry with Zoey: in both cases, the "rival" is clearly stronger than the main character we spend the bulk of our time following the journey of, pushing Ash and Dawn to become stronger as the series goes on; the main difference is that Ash is ultimately able to overcome Paul in the end, besting him in the Sinnoh league with the Infernape that Paul abandoned as a Chimchar successfully taking out 3 of Paul's Pokemon, including his ace in the battle, Electivire. Dawn, on the other hand, never actually succeeds in any of her bouts with Zoey, and despite how much she's grown by the end of her journey, is still not able to beat her in the end, which is not surprising, as Zoey had consistently been shown to be the stronger and better trainer and coordinator of the two; and as a result of this, it never quite feels like Ash or Dawn is on quite the same level as their "rival", moreso with Dawn and Zoey
19:16 Now I’m hungry. And drooling. So Pokémon! DON’T EAT THE POKÉMON! Well except maybe Whitney’s Miltank; she kind of deserves it. On another note, there is one you missed: Trace from Let’s Go. Yeah, he’d probably be around C-tier due to him mainly being the opposite of Blue, but he did adopt the Lavender Town Cubone and used it on his final team, so that’s gotta be worth something.
Honestly, I’d place Barry higher. From a challenge perspective, because his team is in the upper tier of rival teams, but also from a character perspective. He’s your best friend in the games and you can feel that, which is why you feel his loss at the hands of Jupiter at Lake Acuity. And his character matures and develops with the loss. Not to mention, his desire to live up to his father’s legacy is the cherry on top, even if it isn’t nearly as prevalent in the story as the Hop/Leon relationship.
I actually like the dynamic of the 3 from Kalos. Shauna is still in the growing phase and has that cutesy attitude towards things Tierno having a whole breakdancer motif is actually a breath of fresh air Trevor being a bookworm actually works in this trio
Hot take: I think Game Freak was right to stop doing jerk rivals, cuz it really only works the first time. Blue was awesome because being in the first game meant he really was a step ahead of you the whole time. However, in every subsequent game you're likely a returning player who's already beaten a Pokemon league, so another jerk rival just comes across as an annoying joke. "I've beaten several champions and Ghetsis, but sure, you're waaay better than me." It's why I hate the Ace Hunters in MH4U--they constantly patronize me and call me a rookie when I've already killed Elder Dragons in the past and currently getting more things done by myself than all 4 of them combined.
16:02 I think your confused. In Sapphire, Ruby and Emerald, the only way to get sneasel or weavile was through trading, but with games that you could catch sneasel or Weavile you need a razor claw and leveling it up at night. Sorry that was getting on my nerves a bit. Also YOU FORGOT N!
@@GaIeforce and in the manga he helps gold evolve his poliwhirl into a politoad. He also helps green evolve his rhydon into a rhyperior during the HGSS arc which he borrows for the arc because his sixth Pokémon an ursarang is with Giovanni for plot specific reasons that may be too long to explain.
Nice list. My only change would be bumping Bede up to B tier. I actually liked Bede a lot personally, because of his character and his involvement with the story. I do have a question though. Do you not consider N a rival?
And then X&Y happened 😒
Meanwhile in X&Y: *MY MACHINATIONS LAY UNDETECTED FOR YEARS*

Had to look up trace he’s so forgettable
He did like one cool thing in where he put that cubone on his team after facing its mother in the lavender town tower, but yeah other than that he’s pretty lame

I'd say gen 6 Wally is S tier, with gen 3... not
@@HayLeesHomeMade so does she
@@HayLeesHomeMade ORAS is a major glow up from bare bones RSE, as good as those were.
Tierno in particular would've had potential if X and Y had contests, a la Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. Sadly, Tierno showed up a game too early...
I still love Kalos with all my heart.
The only thing connecting him with Mars is similar hairstyles. By that logic he and Roark would be related too and that ain't the case
@@BJGvideos red hair.
Silver here, he's way better than that brat Blue aka Gary Oak.
Ariana being Silver's mom may be just a theory but it makes too much sense to not be canon

Trace is bottom tier. Below bottom tier. He's the worst rival of all time. I will never forgive him for how shallow he made my victory feel. Seriously, his whole arc was that he would always lose to you because he holds back. Who could ever feel happy knowing they won under those conditions?

Wow. The equestria girls version of Aria is so good. 11/10 I love the character design.
Also I say Bede's name is pronounced beh-day.
I thought for sure N technically counted as a rival
Apparently not
I think N technically counts as part of Team Plasma. Hopefully we get a villainous team tier list in the future.
In some cases he dose, but he technically counts more for a villain of the game than a rival since he's the leader of Team Plasma.
First up, Hugh is one of my favorite rivals cause he’s a lot like a friend I once had, plus he’s got a fun team.
Secondly, Marnie is literally my type

Glad to see you're doing more of these, Ari.
I don't suppose a Champion tier list is a future possibility?
Unpopular opinion: I prefer the nicer rivals over the mean rivals because if I wanted to deal with jerks,
I would go back to public school.
Considering Berry is one of my favorites, I'm kind of with you there. XD
I would just like to point out that if you look at Bede's signature on his trainer card, you can make out what looks like is meant to spell "Beed", making me believe the canon pronunciation of his name is "Bead"
Yeah it is. I just commented about this but there was a historian named the Venerable Bede and his Wikipedia article says how to say his name
Actually, I think most people would be surprised that Bede isn’t higher. I feel like he was pretty well received overall.
Did you mean Gengar instead of Weavile in Silver's bit? You dont trade for Weavile
The fact that you straight up completely forgot Trace is just everything to me
>Hop in C tier
The council finds you-
>Only this low due to his team being so mixed up all the time.

Liepard is a fast Pokemon that 9 times out of 10 *will* attack first, and I rocked a great Simisage in Pokemon X.
PS. “Silver needed better closure.”
I don’t know if I’d call it closure, but in Pokémon Masters EX, Silver is paired with Ho-Oh because Ho-Oh acknowledged Silver as a purehearted trainer after Silver chose to help Ethan and Valerie out against some goons over his own desire to be sync-paired with Ho-Oh.

I am upset that people forget N is a rival
Tbh I feel like Hop being so low cuz of his teams to be kind of contradictory when his character arc was praised. This constantly shifting and sometimes ineffective teams are a major aspect of said arc. In an attempt to beat you and Bede, he gets insecure and constantly shifts his teams. This even leads to him eventually deciding to no longer even be a trainer, going to be an assistant for Sonia. It’s a major aspect of his arc.
I feel like Hop and Hugh both need to be way higher but other than that I completely agree.

I'm surprised you put Marnie so high up. She's cute but, imo, she comes across as Bianca but without the struggles Bianca went through
Yeah. She's cute and her theme is a bop. I always turn it on as my battle theme whenever I do the battle tower. 🥰
I was gonna watch the whole vid but I looked at the thumbnail and I changed my mind.
I’d argue that in Hau’s case YOUR the rival to him, he’s the player character in his own head your the test of his strength as a trainer.
Fair.
The hell, DOES EVERYONE JUST FORGET ABOUT N!!!!!!!!! Great character, sad back story, and awesome battle theme
Most people don't consider him a rival, since he's literally shown as the evil team leader until Ghetsis pulls an Agatha All Along.
Great to see another Pokémon video from you!
If I could put anime rival I would put Paul in S tier. Dude was that guy you hate but could back his sh**t up with his results.
Paul was basically if Silver was in the anime (well, outside of that one still shot of him in the Legend of Thunder special).
basically all anime rivals are S tier or at least A for the ones that are less prominent (aside from xy where they are botched💀)
Bede’s is one of my favourites because of his design
Bede is one of my favorites because he’s such a shit lord. Even after he gets redeemed, he’s still a lovable ass-hat.
He also put Hop in his place. Which is a plus in my book.
I actually like the dynamic of the 3 from Kalos. Shauna is still in the growing phase and has that cutesy attitude towards things
Tierno having a whole breakdancer motif is actually a breath of fresh air
Trevor being a bookworm actually works in this trio
Hot take: I think Game Freak was right to stop doing jerk rivals, cuz it really only works the first time.
Blue was awesome because being in the first game meant he really was a step ahead of you the whole time. However, in every subsequent game you're likely a returning player who's already beaten a Pokemon league, so another jerk rival just comes across as an annoying joke. "I've beaten several champions and Ghetsis, but sure, you're waaay better than me."
It's why I hate the Ace Hunters in MH4U--they constantly patronize me and call me a rookie when I've already killed Elder Dragons in the past and currently getting more things done by myself than all 4 of them combined.
Heck, Blue himself is a terrible character. He never changes, never learns from his mistakes and is one-note.
And she forgot about the sword and shield dlc rivals.
...I feel like somebody is missiNg...
I do think I would personally put Bede at B and Marnie at A. Bede because I just have so much fun putting him in his place. Marnie because BEST GIRL
That being said, he had Gengar and Alakazam, both of which required trading to evolve. So he still needed to make a friend.
Gladion and Hop are among my personal favorites.
I got one.
What Pokemon would the Equestria girls would have?
Great list Ari. As a fellow Pokemon Nerd, I really enjoyed it. Silver, Blue and Hugh are my favorite Rivals.
Nice list. My only change would be bumping Bede up to B tier. I actually liked Bede a lot personally, because of his character and his involvement with the story.
I do have a question though. Do you not consider N a rival?
I agree. Bede is one of my favorites because he’s such a shit lord. Even after he gets redeemed, he’s still a lovable ass-hat.
I feel like Aramau was vary hungry when writhing this list lol... and now so am I
