      Like that scene in the 1966 movie "Fahrenheit 451" when Juie Christie tells Montag about people who used to sit on their front porches and swing back and forth talking to the neighbors walking by. Even back then, Ray Bradburry saw the importance of people telling their stories - and that it might go away. Don't ban books!!!

    The way stories are personal makes a real impact. How many times do we share or hear ‘Oh, that happened to me/my friend/my friend’s friend’. Real life connection give weight to experience.

    My best memories are also from my childhood summers spent at my grandparents'. They would tell so many unbelievable stories. I wish I had written them down.

    I believe this to be of the upmost importance right now - we are losing our sense of community, perhaps it is even lost in some places... We need to be able to hear and actually listen to each other's stories to have any sense of understanding. What a fabulous talk. I shall be sharing this!!

    I never thought about the instinctive reactions to stories that she talks about but it's so true, especially in children. 'Tell me a story' is probably one of the most universal things a child says.

    I never thought about how sharing stories face-to-face can create a sense of wonder because we're "climbing into someone else's skin," as she puts it, and seeing the world through their eyes. That's an incredible way to build empathy and understanding.

    Oh wow I really love this... was not expecting to get so emotional about Toms story but when she said "he needed to tell the story" I choked up quite a bit. I think there are so many stories we each have that need to be told and sometimes when they can't be it just eats us up

    Bobette is so on the mark here. It's through the sharing of stories that we can gain perspective and understand experiences. I had never thought about the way people had been taught to repress emotions and stories and how important it was to ensure for their own health and for that of our society, that we make sure that their are opportunities to talk and be open... Sounds like it was a very healing project for many.

    I have done exercises where we were put in pairs and one person had to talk for 2 minutes and the other person was only allowed to listen and show that they were listening. 2 minutes is a long time to talk uninterrupted and I shared so much more than I expected to- I can only imagine what can happen in 5 minutes.

    What she talks about at the 2:44 mark is so important, when you tell a story it gives other people an opportunity to tell THEIR story or fill in some blanks in yours and it can be a really wonderful thing to experience, especially if you're a young one listening to your elders.

    I remember my childhood and our trips to my mom's relatives. That was the most memorable events ever. They always had a great dinner, the table groaned with food, and they all told stories. It was always a long night but I always wanted to stay up all night and listen.. I miss that time, the time of family storytelling. Of course, they are not a national treasure, but they are a treasure for me. It's pity that a lot of relatives died, and that tradition with all the untold stories died with them:(

    I saw the times story too, and it made me realize the stories from my peoples past which have been forgotten too.
