Hi John, Great demo on the ultrasonic cleaner 👌 I’ve been thinking of getting one, a tool my wife has agreed to, as it will clean her jewellery 😂Beautiful saw multi set 😃 great video cheers Rob
I think the lamp is a great piece, and I am thankful that people are willing to help. I think the glass shades would add more class and taste to the lamp
I look forward to EVERY episode!! We share the same taste in restoreables and collections. Thank you so much for what you do and who you are as a person. You're cut from good cloth Sir.
Dale's Workshop has had good success with the Evapo-Rust in his ultrasonic. It would be interesting to compare room temp vs heated and "buzzed" Evapo-Rust on two similarly rusted items.
Man thats awesome getting a US Cleaner. I think the light looks great both ways. Pretty cool someone figured out what it was. That tool kit is really something, the original multitool. Im going to have to put one on the radar now for my collection 😂
Pretty amazing to find out that lamp commands such a high price in good condition! The ultrasonic cleaner is amazing, near limitless in its uses, and imagining the time saved from having to work the gunk out of all the nooks and crannies. Excellent addition to the shop and great show SC!
I really enjoyed this show. The information on the ultrasound cleaner was really helpful. That’s an amazing tool! Your lamp might look better with the glass shade but if you don’t plan to use it or sell it I would leave it as is. It looks nice with the bulbs you have in it. Thank You for sharing John
I like the lamp with those period correct shades, very classy! I love my ultrasonic cleaner and use it all the time! Great video John, thanks for sharing.
The Ultrasonic Cleaner tutorial was a great help! I have thought of purchasing a smaller unit so you gave a lot of great information on them. The like the tool set and I am impressed with how well it was made. Thanks for sharing this.
Whoa that second shade looks like something from Metropolis so I would shoot for that one. It will dim the light some but those were not made for reading or close work. There were other lights for that. There was a UA-cam channel from a mechanic in Wisconsin who did amazing work and he used mineral spirits in his parts washer. Although not cheap parts washer cleaners are much more expensive and not easy to find in real rural areas and when you don't have somebody changing it every month. By the way those ultrasonic cleaners were used ages ago to clean glasses. When you had your eyes checked they would take you glasses and check the prescription and brought them back really clean. We cleaned jewelry using water and adding amonia. Cleaned the stone settings perfectly.
I bought a HF Ultrasonic Cleaner years ago. I bought a digital timer that I plug the unit into. On the HF unit the timer controls the vibration but not the temperature. After leaving it on and melting the plastic basket I decided a timer was the way to go. The heater will evaporate the water then overheat the tank and can damage the ultrasonic sending unit.
It is so cool that a subscriber had more info about your lamp. At the time you got it I wondered if it was all there but what do I know? Yes, please find suitable shades. I bet there are repro or vintage shades out there that would work. BTW, based on the pictures, it looks to me like there is a frosted panel at the bottom of the fixture to diffuse light and conceal the center light bulb when looking up at the fixture. That might account for the holes punched in the center cone you showed us earlier. They would vent light bulb heat. Regardless, you deserve alot of praise for bringing that cool lamp back to life. Thanks. As for the ultrasonic cleaner, it would really reduce the tedium of cleaning the insides o f about 35 really filthy Mossberg sockets I acquired last year. I'm doing it all by hand right now.
I have the same sized ultrasonic. I mainly use mine for cleaning my air-brush set. I often get visitors who want to clean their shells for reloading. I knew about the separate containers, but didn't get around to implementing the idea. Thanks for the reminder, today it is time to clean the main section and get a few jars ready for the next jobs.
So my comment about recouping your money and time made it a worthwhile restoration. AND a nice profit as well! I did not expect a recent cost that high! Congrats! Thanks.
Great show, ScoutCrafter. Glass shades would elevate that lamp even more. The Ultrasonic Cleaner is impressive. I don't know how it works through the glass and plastic bag but I don't have to. It works! I have a kit of multitools. They are very interesting to be sure.
When I first saw that lamp, I thought there should probably be some glass shades with it. As I looked closer, there were no threads or retaining screws for any sort of shade so I figured I was wrong. Nope! I was right again.
Thanks John, how great that a subscriber was able to provide more information on the lamp, it really shows what a great community you have developed on the channel. It was interesting to see the ultra-sonic cleaner in use, I've considered buying one myself but never taken the plunge. I thought ar first that the tool kit looked like a bit of a gimmick, but was surprised by the quality of the components and construction.
John, great video. Our company got a sonic cleaner back in 1994 and it worked so well, we made all kinds of baskets for it so very tiny stuff could be cleaned. I knew when they got affordable I had to have one. I got two now and wowser! I dont know about gas tho. I have 2 of the knife sets like you have from "BARLOW" KNIFE CO. one with a white handle and one with a black one and they both are NOS and still have the oil paper with them.
It is best to use a wire tray with the US cleaners as you don't want to put anything directly on the bottom of the tank. The idea is to suspend the items above the bottom where the US transducers are attached. I routinely use this as SC demonstrated with organic solvents of various types in secondary containers. This will also accelerate the derusting action of Evaporust to a fraction of the time otherwise required.
Great Episode! A ultrasonic cleaner is still on my list to get one day! Those tool kits are cool... and utica made one? I am certainly gonna have to find one then..... the 30s light is just cool and if you add glass globes or whatever they are called it will take it to another level! Good stuff! Thanks for sharing
Bought a small jewelry ultra sonic at a thrift store for a couple of bucks. Seems to do pretty good. I use LA’s Totally Awesome as the liquid solution 😊
definitely a pair of pilers, you can see the outline of the pliers handle on the case where it would have pressed onto it originally. I have an incomplete Japanese one myself. Gimmicky but the quality was that good that I had to have it.
Used an ultrasonic cleaner for years. Don't let anything rest on the bottom: use the basket. Also dont let anything hang part way out of the water. I've had metal score at the waterline and had plastic melt OUT of the water. It's just the vibration that heats it to melting. And-no bubbles. The first thing that happens is all oxygen is driven out of the water which is good because things won't rust (right away). Have fun!
Love those ultrasonic units have used them for many decades on my job and actually have a very similar one to yours in my garage now that was purchased by my son about a year ago 👍
Another great video! Thank you for sharing! I never knew how those cleaners worked? I will have to get one asap!! Have a great night! Looking forward to Friday
Hi John, I guess my comment about the glass sconces was right on the button. When I worked at Pitney Bowes we had a bunch of ultrasonic equipment. We did ultrasonic welding of plastic. It also was used with Freon, which I’m sure was better than gas. Not sure if Freon is flammable. We used Freon all over the place. It would clean off anything. Lots of car parts ran through the shop on the night shift. I had an oil pan for my Camaro Chrome plated. Very cool video. I have an ultrasonic cleaner and a parts vibrator. We used to vibrate castings and parts in a water and smooth stone media. I’m so blessed to have worked at Pitney for the experience I got. Great video. Best Regards, John
I’ve always wanted a really big ultrasonic machine they are fantastic simple but really effective Quite expensive love the knife really unusual don’t see them very often god bless take care 🇺🇸🇳🇿🇮🇱🪖🦅🗽47
John, you did a fantastic job on restoring the lamp, it looks like something at the Empire State Building with King Kong hanging from it. With the ultrasonic cleaner, I have had good results using citric acid to remove rust or to clean brass, nickel plating, etc in my small HF unit.
An ultrasonic is very good for brass shell casings for pistol and rifle hand loaders. It won't make them shine like polished brass, but it will be squeaky clean inside and out.
Great show as always, John. I can't believe the ultrasonic works with a glass jar like that. I wouldn't have thought. Now all I'm thinking is what do I need to clean and does it justify me buying one.
man it would be great if you can find similar art deco glass shades, would look so nice!!! gonna give an ultrasonic cleaner a try! Hopefully to pick one up at an estate sale. Would be great for small items.
I bought the same type of cleaner at half the new price. The problem was that the water drain valve didn't drain. One of the rubber feet on the screen came off and was stuck in the drain. Keep an eye on the feet so they don't get in the drain.
Yes you definitely need to fit the Art Deco shades back will look so much better once fitted. I have restored around 10 art deco lights. Much nicer then cheap Chinese fittings
Hey Scout unrelated note here but I want to thank you for always mentioning Bar Keeper's Friend, it helped me get steel wool marks off an old toilet. Looks brand new... thought it was toast for sure. Even got baked on aluminum-foil off the oven bottom. Saved my @$$!
That chandelier looks great with the glass in place. I think an ultrasonic cleaner is on my wish list. I’m thinking a wrench of some sort is the missing tool.
John you would be surprised with some of those lights. Some are hundreds of pounds solid brass, solid gold, use name brand crystals like Tiffany etc. I know I've come across light fixtures we've hung that were 30, 60k plus and I only know because I got curious and looked them up. Imagine being there hanging a few hundred pound light fixture and spending hours attaching thousands of crystals and the fixture costs more than your car lol wild. If you wanted to look and have your mind blown check out restoration hardware and look at some of the chandeliers.
A stainless tea ball/spice infuser is great for holding tiny parts in that cleaner. The basket from an old coffee maker is good for filtering - they were made to hold coffee filters remember - cleaning solutions for reuse.
I heard that’s more common than people know. The heater unit and transducers must be off from what I heard. Too much stuff for me to remember these days. 😂👍
Those ultrasonic cleaners really come in handy... You'll have to do a test and see if they will clean up one of those screwdrivers with the really funky smelling handles.. It might not do anything for the smell but maybe it would clean it up nicely... Would acetone melt the plastic on the handle? S.C. thx for sharing another adventure...
Awesome! Wow, that art deco lamp for those prices. I would love to find an ultrasonic cleaner (in the bucket list). I think the missing tool is either a screw starter or corkscrew.
If you use flammable solvents in amounts more than a thimble full, always use them outside. Vapor from solvents with low vapor pressures and heavier than air like gasoline will travel along the floor in still air like the vapors in horror movies. You now have an explosive mixture that can travel the length of your shop and only needs the tiniest spark to set it off.
Glass shades would look great. Thanks for the Ultrasonic Cleaner demonstration. It certainly has a place in the shop. Maybe a set of needle nose, is missing from the kit. 👍
Wonderful content as always, thanks for demonstrating different uses of the ultrasonic cleaner. I am guessing the tool kit is missing a pair of scissors
Yes, yes, yes! Must put the glass deco. I love that stained glass. I used to have an all red. I currently have a yellow stained glass. I know that art deco glass has that streamlining effect. Absolute must do because the lights only did settle right with me. If you need some cash off set just say where.
Hi John, I guess my comment about the glass sconces was right on the button. When I worked at Pitney Bowes we had a bunch of ultrasonic equipment. We did ultrasonic welding of plastic. Great video today. Best Regards, John
Ultrasonic cleaner with evapo rust should be a good combo...i do all my itty-bitty carbs in a harbor freight on sale cheapo and it does what i need it to do...🖖
Hi ScoutCrafter , any chance you could show us how you wired the 3 way switch. Maybe use one of your great hand drawn schematics. Thanks for all you do.
That was an awesome video! I thought the lamp would have had shades. The little tool kit is great. You should consider making a new case for it..although a purist would be upset by that.
John, I hope you have a place in your home for that light fixture. That design might not be everyone's cup of tea but I think adding the Art Deco glass as shown at 1:26 would only add to its beauty.
It is better to use a plastic bag or plastic container. Glass bottles will dampen the oscillations from the ultrasonic cleaner so reduces the effect of the cleaning. Steves Small Engines has a video showing this. As someone else commented, it is best to use the basket to keep the items off the bottom of the tank. Very interesting that the lamp is so collectable. Lots of options for the glass shades. Dave.
Ultrasonics are in every dental office across the country. They place all instruments in the bath to remove the yuck before they sterilize them. Dentists also use a product in the ultrasonic called stain and tartar remover for calculus on dentures/and prosthetics. It works really well. That or vinegar might work well in your cut away valve projects for hard water buildup. I have wondered if an Ultrasonic would make Evaporust work better or faster using the jar method. Could you test it sometime? Thanks
You sir have some excellent subscribers, and some very knowledgeable people among them to boot. Like sonic cleaner tutorial, and the gas in a jar kinda made me raise an eyebrow at first, but, as long as its encapsulated in a jar like that, it should work well and be reusable over and over until it’s saturated. The lamp, I think would look nice with shades, now you got something to look for on the poor man’s flee market tours, see if you can come up with some period shades, just a thought. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching.
An ultrasonic cleaner *can* blow you up if you use a bunch of flammable stuff. The transducers mounted to the tub can get super hot. Hot enough to melt off their mounts. That means, keep solvent in a separate container than the main bath, like you did, and you'll be fine. Probably.
ScoutCrafter, If you're crazy enough to clean using gasoline why not try benzene or 1-1-1 TCE? Out of curiosity how do you plan on disposing of the dirty gas? Time for a sea story. Once upon a time, a crew member cleaned a dirty gear in a can that had a 1/4 cup of TCE. After cleaning the gear he dumped the dirty TCE into a waste oil tank. In turn, the waste oil tank was emptied into the cargo slop tank. The tank was loaded with oil and was eventually pumped to a refinery with the cargo. TCE is water soluble, so it mixed with water that was in the tank. When the tanker arrived at the loading port it discharged the water ashore. During routine sampling of the water parts per billion of TCE was detected. I was elected to explain to the EPA how a 1/4 cup of TCE found its way to detection. In the end, we received a mandatory fine, and could no longer by liquid TCE, only aerosol. Growing up gasoline was the solvent of choice. Many a bike chain, and other parts, were cleaned with gasoline and a toothbrush. Enjoy your ultrasonic cleaner. Bob
Bob- Getting rid of chemicals is always a problem, here in the city they have days you can go and drop anything off. For my 3 ounces of gas I will use it as a fire starter on some old branches I burn every so often. 3 ounces is much easier to burn off then 5 gallons! 🫣😂👍
I wasn't a 100% sure but when I made the comment about glass shades the other day but I was about 95% sure that it had to of had shades originally, the rest of the details were too nice to just be an exposed light bulb lamp plus it seemed designed with a place for shades to go.......Sometimes we forget our Old Friend Gas, when nothing else was really cutting it including Lighter Fluid I used Gas to get off some Label Adhesive and like Magic it was off in just seconds.
Remember when you mentioned that spring steel (used on Starrett Tools) is affected by Evapo-Rust? I am guessing that nothing happens to spring steel in the Ultrasonic Cleaner?
Use the wire basket that came with your ultrasonic cleaner because you burn out the transducers on the ultrasonic cleaner. Nothing should rest on the bottom of the cleaner😢
What an interessting story about that beauitiful lamp. Crazy.
HEY kislux !! I have been watching you for years and im so proud of where you have made it! I love you so much! Also thanks for making my day

Whoa that second shade looks like something from Metropolis so I would shoot for that one. It will dim the light some but those were not made for reading or close work. Great show, ScoutCrafter. Glass shades would elevate that lamp even more.

Those shades really makes the lamp!
Love the glass shades and the ones you flashed up on screen would be perfect to go along with the Metropolis theme.

Joe- That Bar Keeper’s Friend is sure a hidden gem- It’s the only thing that gets the glass insulators clean. So glad it helped! 😃👍
That chandelier looks great with the glass in place. I think an ultrasonic cleaner is on my wish list. I’m thinking a wrench of some sort is the missing tool.
I think Marty's Matchbox had a special solution for that ultrasonic cleaner, he used a jar as well!

Rick- That shade I showed was $60 a piece! I need 5 of them. 😳😂👍
Dave.
Actually Dave it’s the opposite- Plastic in this case is worse than glass. It goes against common sense but Glass works better in the machines.
Love the German Tool Set. Is the missing tool maybe Needle Nose Pliers?
Bob is your UNCLE!!!!!!
You have to go whole hog and put some art deco shades on that lamp, please.
Thanks
It’s amazing how the cost of the cleaners have dropped over the last decade. 😃👍
Terry- Yes! I wouldn’t trust pouring straight gas in the stainless hopper. 🫣😂👍
An ultrasonic cleaner *can* blow you up if you use a bunch of flammable stuff. The transducers mounted to the tub can get super hot. Hot enough to melt off their mounts.
That means, keep solvent in a separate container than the main bath, like you did, and you'll be fine. Probably.
Yes! I don’t use heat with anything that can go boom! 😂😂👍
ScoutCrafter,
If you're crazy enough to clean using gasoline why not try benzene or 1-1-1 TCE?
Use the basket, chances are that the small coils can come loose and you will break the machine. Love your videos ❤
Yes- I was thinking the same thing. I don’t put and spring steel in evaporust but I haven’t heard anything about ultrasonic cleaners yet. 😂👍
Could the missing tool be shears or scissors?
Great video. Lamp looks good with shades.
I bet someone will find out! 😃👍
Wire cutters and put on the shade you showed John then sell for big bucks!!!
Old motorcycle? Please tell us more!
Hey John….you just need never know concerning the “ art deco “ hanging light..you got a keeper.
Looks like a manly man's manicure set.
I think the glass shades really finish it off
As to the tool kit, I think it's missing a flashlight.
I think the missing tool is a pair of scissors.
Nice video. Probably missing needle nose pliers or wire cutters.
Use the wire basket that came with your ultrasonic cleaner because you burn out the transducers on the ultrasonic cleaner. Nothing should rest on the bottom of the cleaner😢
BOOM 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Missing a pair of tweezers for the size of the missing trap.
BEAUTIFUL ART DECO PIECE FOR SURE. SHADES WOULD REALLY SET IT OFF. BETTER THAN NEW.
WIRE CUTTERS?
