After spending 36 years in aircraft I would say that Vee Lox tool is for installing break-off collars on aircraft fasteners like hiloks. The collars have a nut that will break off at a designated torque and are one use only.
You're right about the tweezers!! I got a pair of Dumont #1 Tweezers in a box of something I bought, they are made in Switzerland and are the pointiest, sharpest tweezers I've ever seen!! I think they cost like $50 if I had to replace them!!☻

I don't think I have any left, I'm going to assume I've lost them over the years. I wonder who else makes handles like that! *EDIT* After digging around, apparently they were made by Vermont American. The one in the video does not have ribs, but I'm pretty sure my set did. Vermont American's version had ribs and was called "The Claw". :D
Being an auto mechanic during the 70s-80s when we still had points ignition, those little ignition wrenches were used a lot. I still have a couple of sets, including a Snapon set from back in the day.
Nice buy, we had that ratcheting tool set when we were kids,they worked great for us when we were young enough to enjoy skateboarding. Glad to hear Pipes doing well and see you Wednesday.
I recently got a sweet deal in an eBay lot - a handful of odds and ends including two older Starrett items. One was a #35 small bubble level with one cap missing from one end, and the other was a #71 folding thickness feeler gauge very similar to the one you are showing in this video. Sadly, one of the leaves (.001) was broken off, but I don’t ever get that perfect anyway 😉. Both of them have their issues, but they cleaned up really nice. It was a great deal for me and fun to clean up. Sometimes the “lots” are the absolute best deals

My aunt worked at Texas Instruments and used to bring me needle nose tweezers they used so many times and then threw away! I used them on my plastic model kits.. Way nicer than I needed

I am a Gearhead car enthusiast writing here that used to be ASE certified. By 1975 most vehicles got electronic ignition (Chrysler I believe was the first in 1972), (Remember Fords "duraspark", GMs "HEI [high energy ignition] and Chryslers "Electronic Lean Burn", they were all the rage in the Hot Rod world for converting points cars) By 1978 I cannot think of a single car sold in America that was not electronic ignition, heck even most lawn mowers went electronic ignition around 1985 same thing goes with boat outboards and dirt toys. By 2000ish most cars don't even have distributors any more and many don't even have spark plug wires as they now use a computer and position sensors to control spark with individual coils mounted right on top of each individual spark plug. In the aftermarket you can get a awesome device called a "pertronix" that basically is a hall effect sensor and a spinning magnet that takes place of the points and all fits right under the stock distributor cap, this is great for a classic car or an antique vehicle as the only give away is instead of one wire coming out of the distributor going to the negative side of the coil, the distributor now has 2 wires one going to the negative side and one going to the positive side of the coil. I love my points ignition systems to this day because I can always get my car home no matter what but I won't lie it is nice not having to adjust points or ignition timing on a modern vehicle and just hitting the key and it just runs. That being said. Old vehicles don't really mechanically die they just need maintenance stay running.
That was a nice purchase. I keep a shrader valve removal tool as well as a long handled valve stem puller/seater. Of course you need various tire irons for motorcycle to car tires. I do have a HF tire removal tool but I don't use it enough to keep it mounted. There is an important lesson on the center punch from Japan. In those days it was like China today quality wise. Both of us have seen the advancement of Japan, then Taiwan and South Korea, now if it holds true China. I have doubts still about their electrical components as they are like the sparkplug gauge. That pipe bowl cleaner is a neat tool for those that used a pipe. Everyone I knew used their pocket knife.
Eklind is still in business and still made in USA! They are available at Ace hardware and COSTS LESS than the comparable Craftsman product next to it that is made overseas!

Great show as always Scout. You know what I love best about American tools? The fact that most companies put their name and address on them like they’re proud of what they make. Australia is so different, most companies just put Australia if they put anything. Others just used a sticky label or a water slide transfer which obviously disappears over time. That ratchet socket tool set with the name USS and Alside on it, Alside is a vinyl siding manufacturer. As a former remodeling salesman, I sold many a job using Alside siding. It was a great siding, better at the time then Mastic which is probably the number one siding manufacturer today.
I will have to look at the Vintage tool lot. I have a PM screwdriver that was a gimme. Just wire wheeled and fiber wheeled the rusty shaft. Back in service!

I looked up the manufacturer when I got home. It is a medical device designed to have electrical wires attached and used in labotomies. Wow. I have a similar inspection mirror, mine is rectangle. As you said, sometimes we cannot see behind and need a mirror. I use mine for e.g., tightening the backlash adjustment on the compound of my metal lathe. The screws are at the back and underneath. Very difficult to adjust without the mirror. Glad that Pipes is almost back to normal. Dave.

The tire valve tool is also used to pull the new valve into place in the wheel also to hold an inner tube valve in place while you mount the tire on the rim. Nothing worse then losing the damn valve in the tire and need to fish it out. The unknown ratchet wrench I believe was used to adjust a valve. An Allen wreck went in the center and the keeper nut was tightened by the wrench.
I actually use a few different size ignition wrenches almost everyday at work. I use the style that has the same size on each end. Their small size and the high offset on the one end is a huge help with installing some small pneumatic barbs and fittings as well as some of the circuit board stand offs in the equipment I build.
John, I have the craftsman ignition wrench set still in the plastic pouch just like the one you showed , to be honest I have never ever use that is been there for like 40 years
Really enjoy your videos. Correction--that pointy bit on the Schrader tool is for removing broken valves. With that tool it is easy to twist off a valve leaving half the valve in stem. The pointy bit is an easy out. Without it, you cannot get them out.
Another great video. I enjoyed the eBay tips. The price of shipping to Canada makes it pretty tough on the lower-priced items. Checking the tolerances on the measuring devices was a great idea.

Yes I attended the cabin fever engineering show on Friday. It was an hour and half drive for me but well worth it. Very overwhelming to see everything and all the remarkable machinery. I posted photos on my fb page. Several hobby lathes and supplies were for sell with plenty of talented and expert advice. John have you ever tried Lysol toilet bowl cleaner as a rust remover? How about an ultrasonic machine? So much overload I forgot about the Patina club meeting in McClean, Va. on Sunday.
That's a great little mixed lot John, and well worth the money, I like all three pliers and that centre punch is worth the money alone ! I was trying to remember who I'd seen with the socket tools and it was when George answered your question about how many screwdrivers ! I've had some luck with similar mixed lots and especially with local "collection only" lots as we are a bit out on a limb here so not many people want to travel specially to pick up - so that's my tip, if you're rural not city based !

Like your father’s I have a Craftsman ignition wrench set, and I’ve used some of the wrenches in it some times; perhaps twice. When I smoked a pipe, which was long ago and for not very long I just used a knife to scrap out the gunk, but a nice reamer to say the least. The ratchet tools show up in flea market box lots often with a complete set, and I have several with differently marked logos. As for the button pliers, anytime I see them in good shape and reasonable I’ll pick them up, ditto’s for lineman pliers. Thinking of displaying them somehow, but 50 plus pairs are heavy….Thanks again!
Great purchase! I had to laugh though about the ignition wrenches. I have the Craftsman set in the plastic pouch that you mentioned. They have to be over 40 years old and I maybe used one once. They still look brand new. Of course, whenever I see feeler gauges it brings me back to the days of adjusting the points in the distributor.
I bought a set of Sears Craftsman ignition wrenches for my older Delta 8” wood jointer. The fence adjustment has some small screws. I used it on my John Deere 318 for a few bolts in the tower. But otherwise, it sits in the plastic holder in the tool box.
The center transfer punch is the only thing that would tempt me. I own machinist grade transfer punch sets, one was well over $300. I don't any transfers punches with the taper nose feature. That feature would allow thin material hole center transfer like you demonstrated with the hinge. Maybe I need another tool.
The VEE-LOX tool looks like it could loosen and tighten a retaining fastener but allow for a screwdriver etc to pass through to adjust something. The ThermoQuad carb has a secondary butterfly spring tension setting that uses that method.
Interesting episode. I was given a bucket of rusty tools a few weeks ago. Amount the other jewels in the bucket was one of those “button” pliers. Did not know what it was for and there was no makers mark but it cleaned up beautifully. Looks like jewelers now.
As a tool collector, mostly vintage USA stuff, for some reason, I love those quirky, novelty junk tools that can be found at estate sales and flea markets. I have drawers full of that useless stuff. Hong Kong spit out lots of low quality tools that could break the first time you used it.
No clue on the Vee Lox, but all the others I either have still, or at least have had and used them before. Still have my little vinyl pouch of Craftsman ignition wrenches. Very seldom used now, but in the 60's and 70's, when distributors had points, they were a must have tool. Getting the condenser wire attached without them was almost impossible with the points in the distributor.
I use ignition wrenches for small stuff - in the past I used them during my typewriter days. The modern wrenches have poor finish compared to the ones from the 1970s. Sears had two good sets of combination ignition wrenches: Inch Part Number: 9 HT 43441 Metric Part Number: 9 HT 42928 These sets can still be found on Ebay in pristine shape since few people used them.
John the last time I used my ignition wrenches was in the early 70’s on my old chevys.. the little mirror is a very handy tool. I remember dropping a bolt in an old ford transmission. I had a flex magnet that was a blessing. All the different little tools come in handy now and then. It’s nice to open the drawer and find that one different tool you need. Great show, thank You
Regarding the quirky ratchet set, "USS" would have been the clincher for me being a US Steel "veteran." It must have been a promotional US Steel gift, like maybe a Safety Award gift. I didn't get a gift when I was at US Steel, so maybe it was something that was given to salaried employees, like Foremen, most probably, and I say that because I have a hard time imagining that they would have handed out 10,000 sets, one to each employee at the Mill I was employed at (Fairless Works).
Money well spent in my opinion them ignition wrenches I use on my fishing reels when I'm doing maintenance on the which is every other year really handy for that

I'm jealous of those splinter tweezers. If you ran them through your magnetizer, it will help with metal splinters. The Vee Lox I have seen before, was described as an installation tool for hex-head screws. I can't comment if that's true or not though.
The first thing that caught my eye was the PM screwdriver.. I had a set of screwdrivers and nut drivers made by them.. I got them either at K-Mart or Walmart... They were fantastic tools... Popular Mechanics tools were sold by Kmart. I have several different kinds of their screwdrivers as well as a portable tool kit that I have had in my pickups since the 90s when I bought them new. Great tools.
I've owned several American, Italian and British cars from the 1960's and 1970's that had points ignitions, and not once did I ever need one of those little "ignition wrenches" when working on the ignition. I have no idea what they're really good for.
Love this channel so much. About ignition wrenches- yes, I used them a number of times in my younger days, when cars were made so you could work on them properly! ( I am in my 70s) And as you certainly know, sometimes there is pleasure in just holding or handling really well made tools- after we would work on engines back then, we would enjoy wiping down and cleaning every tool we had used and putting it back in the tool tray or box, all shiny and new looking. And I had some tools that my Dad had from his youth... they knew how to make things back then, Thanks for all your videos!
Oh, conscience! If you've ever seen those wire type feeler gauges used on spark plugs, you realise the novice can't resist finding the absolute tightest match . . . small wonder the one spot outermost on the wire loop is prematurely thinned down.

The "casing" is usually called the valve "stem" in my area anyway.
That magnetic pick up tool can save your day. A must have in any tool box.

Yes I attended the cabin fever engineering show on Friday. It was an hour and half drive for me but well worth it. Very overwhelming to see everything and all the remarkable machinery. I posted photos on my fb page. Several hobby lathes and supplies were for sell with plenty of talented and expert advice. John have you ever tried Lysol toilet bowl cleaner as a rust remover? How about an ultrasonic machine? So much overload I forgot about the Patina club meeting in McClean, Va. on Sunday.
That's a great little mixed lot John, and well worth the money, I like all three pliers and that centre punch is worth the money alone ! I was trying to remember who I'd seen with the socket tools and it was when George answered your question about how many screwdrivers !
I've had some luck with similar mixed lots and especially with local "collection only" lots as we are a bit out on a limb here so not many people want to travel specially to pick up - so that's my tip, if you're rural not city based !

@@ScoutCrafter She actually stopped eating - and, more worryingly, drinking - and started hiding away in dark corners. The vet thinks she's traumatized from something, which is understandable given what she's been through recently. She's eating and drinking again, but she's still spending most of the time in one of her hidey-holes.

Like your father’s I have a Craftsman ignition wrench set, and I’ve used some of the wrenches in it some times; perhaps twice. When I smoked a pipe, which was long ago and for not very long I just used a knife to scrap out the gunk, but a nice reamer to say the least. The ratchet tools show up in flea market box lots often with a complete set, and I have several with differently marked logos. As for the button pliers, anytime I see them in good shape and reasonable I’ll pick them up, ditto’s for lineman pliers. Thinking of displaying them somehow, but 50 plus pairs are heavy….Thanks again!

Great purchase! I had to laugh though about the ignition wrenches. I have the Craftsman set in the plastic pouch that you mentioned. They have to be over 40 years old and I maybe used one once. They still look brand new. Of course, whenever I see feeler gauges it brings me back to the days of adjusting the points in the distributor.
Ah the feeler gauge. Valve jobs on my old BMW in-line sixes. .010 in cold
I bought a set of Sears Craftsman ignition wrenches for my older Delta 8” wood jointer. The fence adjustment has some small screws. I used it on my John Deere 318 for a few bolts in the tower. But otherwise, it sits in the plastic holder in the tool box.

The center transfer punch is the only thing that would tempt me. I own machinist grade transfer punch sets, one was well over $300. I don't any transfers punches with the taper nose feature. That feature would allow thin material hole center transfer like you demonstrated with the hinge. Maybe I need another tool.
The VEE-LOX tool looks like it could loosen and tighten a retaining fastener but allow for a screwdriver etc to pass through to adjust something. The ThermoQuad carb has a secondary butterfly spring tension setting that uses that method.
Interesting episode. I was given a bucket of rusty tools a few weeks ago. Amount the other jewels in the bucket was one of those “button” pliers. Did not know what it was for and there was no makers mark but it cleaned up beautifully. Looks like jewelers now.
They are usually referred to as Button pattern or style- I find them really handy and comfortable! 😃👍
The Vee-Lox is a ratchet wrench for installing threaded rivet insert nuts.

As a tool collector, mostly vintage USA stuff, for some reason, I love those quirky, novelty junk tools that can be found at estate sales and flea markets. I have drawers full of that useless stuff. Hong Kong spit out lots of low quality tools that could break the first time you used it.
Lots of those gimmick tools has multiple uses. “Can it core an Apple?” 😂👍

No clue on the Vee Lox, but all the others I either have still, or at least have had and used them before. Still have my little vinyl pouch of Craftsman ignition wrenches. Very seldom used now, but in the 60's and 70's, when distributors had points, they were a must have tool. Getting the condenser wire attached without them was almost impossible with the points in the distributor.
I use ignition wrenches for small stuff - in the past I used them during my typewriter days. The modern wrenches have poor finish compared to the ones from the 1970s. Sears had two good sets of combination ignition wrenches:
Inch Part Number: 9 HT 43441
Metric Part Number: 9 HT 42928
These sets can still be found on Ebay in pristine shape since few people used them.
John the last time I used my ignition wrenches was in the early 70’s on my old chevys.. the little mirror is a very handy tool. I remember dropping a bolt in an old ford transmission. I had a flex magnet that was a blessing. All the different little tools come in handy now and then. It’s nice to open the drawer and find that one different tool you need. Great show, thank You

Regarding the quirky ratchet set, "USS" would have been the clincher for me being a US Steel "veteran." It must have been a promotional US Steel gift, like maybe a Safety Award gift. I didn't get a gift when I was at US Steel, so maybe it was something that was given to salaried employees, like Foremen, most probably, and I say that because I have a hard time imagining that they would have handed out 10,000 sets, one to each employee at the Mill I was employed at (Fairless Works).
I have hopes that one day our Steel plants will roar again. 😃👍

Money well spent in my opinion them ignition wrenches I use on my fishing reels when I'm doing maintenance on the which is every other year really handy for that

I'm jealous of those splinter tweezers. If you ran them through your magnetizer, it will help with metal splinters. The Vee Lox I have seen before, was described as an installation tool for hex-head screws. I can't comment if that's true or not though.

The first thing that caught my eye was the PM screwdriver.. I had a set of screwdrivers and nut drivers made by them.. I got them either at K-Mart or Walmart... They were fantastic tools... Very comfortable in your hands..

Popular Mechanics tools were sold by Kmart. I have several different kinds of their screwdrivers as well as a portable tool kit that I have had in my pickups since the 90s when I bought them new. Great tools.
I've owned several American, Italian and British cars from the 1960's and 1970's that had points ignitions, and not once did I ever need one of those little "ignition wrenches" when working on the ignition. I have no idea what they're really good for.
Love this channel so much. About ignition wrenches- yes, I used them a number of times in my younger days, when cars were made so you could work on them properly! ( I am in my 70s) And as you certainly know, sometimes there is pleasure in just holding or handling really well made tools- after we would work on engines back then, we would enjoy wiping down and cleaning every tool we had used and putting it back in the tool tray or box, all shiny and new looking. And I had some tools that my Dad had from his youth... they knew how to make things back then, Thanks for all your videos!

Oh, conscience! If you've ever seen those wire type feeler gauges used on spark plugs, you realise the novice can't resist finding the absolute tightest match . . . small wonder the one spot outermost on the wire loop is prematurely thinned down.

Like the center punch, excellent find. Liked the ratcheting set, square sockets, I don’t believe I have seen those before. I had a box full of tools just given to me in exchange for restoring/ refurbishing a beautiful antique dove tailing saw, in that box was a tool I had never seen before, I was wondering if I could send a pic of it to you to see if you could maybe help identify it? It was made by Greenfield, so it’s not junk. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it.
