      He always did. One of the Southern Rock traditions is that the band will get front and center on every song. Skynyrd did it, Allman Brothers did it, Steve Miller Band Did it, Charlie Daniel did it. . .they all did it.

      @michaelchmiel166 2 роки тому +19

      Man for man, you'd be hard pressed to find ANY other band with nearly the talent that Skynard had. And I'm not a huge fan. Like 'em, but not even in my Top 5.
      But talent wise? These guys were Top Shelf all the way across the board. They were true masters of the game.
      And think about it. It's hard enough to get TWO guitarists to truly help a lot of the time. Ego gets in the way.
      Not with these fucking guys. Not only did all 3 of them kill it, but they even had a PIANO PLAYER that had chops. Serious chops. Piano player doing a solo at a ROCK concert?

    If you want to see Allen Collins lose himself in that guitar solo go watch the Knebworth performance. He plays it longer and the camera stays on him and less in the crowd. The lead singer had to tug on his shoulder to get him to stop because the drummer couldn't go anymore. Great reaction! Needle and the Spoon 1976 is another great one

    • @kattcity
      @kattcity 2 роки тому +13

      Yes at Knebworth Ronnie really turns Allen loose on the solo...They do at least 3 speed ups during the solo, only did 2 speed us in Oakland...and yes Ronnie has to reel him back in as Allen would just keep on going. I saw them live in their hometown of Jacksonville back in May of 1976....they played even longer ...wish that had been filmed ....another version I love the Convention Hall in 1977 ...it is filmed in black and white but it has the best shots of them all playing much less focus on crowd.

My mom had to sneak me in there and convinced the ticket-taker that I was 18. My mom was a hippie from the 60's and I love her for taking me to this concert. It got better after Lynyrd Skynyrd stop playing Santana came on after them. Bill Graham used to put on these concert in the summer called Day on the Green and it would cost about $8 to get in and they would pack 65,000 people in the Oakland Coliseum. It was awesome they stop doing the concerts in the mid-80s unfortunately. Great reaction young lady keep doing your thang!❤

    I was 16 and my mom God rest her soul took me to this concert at the Oakland coliseum 1977. These concerts were called day on the green and they were presented by Bill Graham who used to be a promoter. The idea was to come spend the day on the green grass in the outfield. Born and raised in Oakland, we don't have these concerts anymore and we don't have the sports teams that played in that stadium anymore, pretty sad! I do have the memories of all the great music and all the great people that would come together without any cell phones, just some good smoke & some good music!! The crazy thing is for $12 I also saw Santana, Peter Frampton and a group called The Outlaws, on the same day!!

    Loved your reaction! Your face told the reaction story of hearing/watching the masterpiece that is Free Bird. As April Dawn wrote below, I recommend all people watch the FULL version of Free Bird at Knebworth. There is an edited version that edits out some of the piano, for some reason, so look out for the longer version of Knebworth. The other added element to that concert, LS was opening up for the Stones that day. LS were told that they could not go onto the "tongue" portion of the stage, as that was for the Stones only. Watch what Ronnie does with that, LOL. LS blew it out of the water that day, and as usual. Everyone who loves LS and the song Free Bird needs to watch the Knebworth version!!!

    The Greatest!! Watch That Smell or Needle and the Spoon live can’t go wrong with either! I was in my late teens when this group was putting out the greatest Albums ever assembled R.I.P to all the original members.

    Ronnie never thought this song would do much. The record label didn't want to record it because it was too long. Not only did the song become a hit, It became the National Anthem of Southern Rock. It was a good thing there wasn't a roof on the Colosseum, because It would have come down. It is unfortunate that they were taken so soon. Long live Southern Rock! Thank you for your reaction.

    Since I grew up in the 1970's and 1980's I really appreciate the reaction of young people like you seeing this performance for the first time! Here is a link to their entire concert about a week later in Asbury Park, NJ. ua-cam.com/video/QoEZa5oG4b4/v-deo.html
    They really captured all of the great guitar solos from the 3 guitar players. Sadly, on October 20th, 1977 just 3 months later, the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant and their great guitar player, Steve Gaines were killed when the plane they were on crashed near McComb Mississippi. They were headed to Baton Rouge, LA in my home state. I was only 11 at the time but when we hear the news it was devastating.

      My Uncle was about 18 and I think this was the concert he went to. He is about 5 yrs older than me I think... anyway he bought a shirt.... and gave it to me a few years later... I was spending the night at a friends... took my overnight bag and had the shirt in it... there ended up being a big party. needless to say, someone got into my bag, stole it . I was SOOOO PISSED the next day when I discovered that. I would have loved to see them in concert

    Yeah girl you were loving on Gary Rossington in the intro) He kept the remaining band playing till 2023. Recommend Tuesday's Gone (slow with great beginning & ending guitar solos ) 67 & remember slow dancing to the 1st part & rocking to the 2nd. Yeah Gary Rossington on intro. slide solos got me up on the dance floor with my boyfriend back then and stayed rocking to Allen Collins' insane solo(white outfit) till the end. Poor Allen barely survived the plane crash only to lose his wife to miscarriage then in tragic car crash killing his girlfriend, paralyzing him & died of pneumonia from his condition only age 37. Gary passed in 23' undisclosed circumstances. He suffered from multiple heart attacks and surgeries for yrs. but kept the music alive. Only the drummer Artemis Pyle is still alive. The late front man singer's brother, Johnny van Zant might still be singing in the tribute band . The 70s had phenomenal music of all genres but they partied, drugged & drank so hard it might have made them them self medicate after 1977 crash causing tragedy after tragedy the rest of their lives.
