I love watching people that have never even heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd react to this song. They have no idea what is coming up and it is always so amusing to watch them get into it for the very first time.
I've always considered this version to be a FOUR guitar attack; very often, through no fault of his own, Leon Wilkeson, the bassist, is not considered a guitarist! He definitely contributes some strong phrases, plucking those bass cables (they're so much more than regular guitar strings) cleanly, loudly, and without distortion; when Leon steps in from the right to join Allen Collins (the fellow in white) near the end, he's hitting those rapid notes staccato-like, up-n-down that long bass neck; seems Leon was going to break his fingers working so hard and fast on those thick strings.
I feel something similar for Artemis on the drums. Sounds like he was at Mach 3 . I always had this mental picture of him falling over when the guys up front hit that last note.😄
I was there…. It was my greatest concert moment. The cameraman pushed around a camera the size of a V8 engine on rollers. So mellow then the crowd went crazy.. what a timeless day at the coliseum. I’m 66, I will never forget it.
My aunt was at Monterey Pop in 67 and saw Janis Joplin perform Ball and Chain. You might be the only person that can rival the bad ass-ery of her story lol
That's way cool. It had to be a blast but I want to know if that blonde guy in the middle of the video got any snatch off that blonde girl that night. He had to.😂🤘🇺🇸
I cried the first time I watched this video. Watching them play and hearing how perfect it was during a live performance. It gave me chills and the tears just flowed. Amazingly talented young men, now all gone. This is my favorite song of all time.
when the Bass player is like, hi can I jam with you guys? lol but seriously the musicianship of this band sometimes gets overlooked but make no mistake about it, these boys could absolutely play with any band of their era and even outplayed the Rolling Stones on their home turf at a show.
Lynyrd Skynyrd would not have been who they are without Ed King. The rest of the band was great, but when they brought Ed in the total dynamic changed.
Saw them live in Columbia SC in the summer of 1974 as a backup band for Blue Oyster Cult. The closed the show with Freebird and we didn’t even stay for Blue Oyster Cults complete show. We had already seen the “Show”. I then attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. I had tickets to the show at LSU - that’s where they were headed when their plane went down. I still have those tickets framed on my wall. And yes I am 68 years old and the 1970’s were an amazing era to grow up in
Great performance with epic guitar solo. Tragic plane crash that took the lives of several members of the band not long after this concert. RIP ❤ Thanks for this reaction.
The plane crash that was 2-3 months after this performance killed Ronnie Van Zant ( lead singer 29 yrs old), Steve Gaines (red pants was 28), Steve's sister Cassie Gaines (backup singer was 29), road manager and 2 pilots. 20 others survived but had serious injuries. Ten years after the crash the band regrouped with Johnny Van Zant as the lead singer. They are still touring today. Saw them last summer and will see them again this summer. Steve had a beautiful voice, check out Ain’t No Good. THE GIRLS WERE there to see the headliner Peter Frampton.
I saw them I think 3 years ago and was on my way to see them again in Aug 2023 and a lady decided to stop on the highway to get on and I was getting off the highway and let's just say my Harley Davidson didn't make it luckily I was slowing down and not going very fast thankfully. Just a little road rash.
About 18 months after the crash, Leon and Billy had already guested on an album called Vision, and everybody but Artimus had regrouped as Rossington Collins Band. The Skynyrd name took a 10 year break, but the players really didn't, which is nuts.
I saw this show a couple weeks later at Anaheim Stadium in the evening time. I was 20 years old and about 10 feet from the stage. To all you youngsters out there you’ll never be as cool as your grandparents were. Lol. Truth.
Loved your reaction! One of the best songs and performances. Recommend you also view their performance of this song in Knebworth, England, in 1976. The solo in that one is very good also! Tragic what happened to the band only a few months after this performance. They had so many great songs.
I love your description of it as lots of plot twists. For me it's always been a journey and once it shifts from the nostalgic ballad part into the main jam, it always gives me the feeling of an airplane taking off. Which is so poignant because not long after this was their airplane crash that killed certain members and crew members and severely injured others and essentially abruptly ended this stratospheric career climb of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1977. I was in 9th grade and just devastated.
They had so many hits and they were one of those bands for me like Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Beatles where I literally liked every song off of every album. Such diversity and variety, but yet they always had their own sound. Simple Man and The Ballad Of Curtis Loew are easy entry points and reacted to a lot, and were hits and are fan favorites, but they really do have a ton of stuff before the plane crash.
Specifically, Lynyrd Skynyrd is a Southern Rock band. Glad you liked it. Free Bird is one of 10 songs I would have to have with me on a deserted island. The other nine: Marmalade - Reflections of My Life 1968, Barry Manilow - Mandy 1974, Boston - More Than a Feeling, Dobie Gray - Drift Away, Led Zepplin - Stairway to Heaven, Andy Williams - Moon River, Frank Sinatra - Softly, Gerry Raferty - Baker Street, and Mason Williams - Classical Gas
Lynyrd Skynyrd was America's best band ever and one of the best bands ever in the recording studio, but you have to see them live to fully appreciate how great they really were (as you now know). Here are three Southern boogie bangers that are live and have good sound recording as well: 1)"T for Texas" Live at the Asbury Park, NJ Convention Hall 2) "Whiskey Rock-a-Roller" Live at Knebworth 3) "Call Me the Breeze" Live at Knebworth
I was at the concert. 26 year old fireman on a day off. The bands were The Outlaws, then Santana, followed by Lynyrd Skynner, then most people left before the top act took stage, Peter Frampton.
Growing up in the southern United States Lynyrd Skynyrd was/is a tightly woven part of our fabric of life. The band origins are from Florida but adopted by all who appreciate our southern heritage. Thanks for your reaction. ✌ & ❤ 🎸
Absolutely fantastic. Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium I will never forget that concert. One of our friends was kicked out just before they came on because he had worked the night shift and hadn't slept. We were sitting on the 2nd deck and as I was passing a joint a hand with a black sleeve took it. All that officer did was kick out our friend. Lots more from Lynyrd Skynyrd. RIP., I had the original Street Survivors album cover. It had just come out and they changed the cover because of the crash and the flames on the cover. I do not know how many of the originals were sold.
First off I want to say, your makeup is gorgeous! It’s such a light touch that probably isn’t even needed. You are beautiful. I love seeing so many reactor’s first impression seeing Lynyrd Skynyrd and many of the rock bands from the 60’s and 70’s. There are many great singer, songwriter’s and musician’s from that era. If you haven’t given a reaction for Jackson Browne, you should listen to his Running on Empty or The Pretender. Again, I love your reaction and I’m glad it wasn’t disappointing for you! Peace out! 🎤🎹🎸🥁🎼
You have to love that intro by the great Billy Powell on Piano AND that raucous guitar instrumental by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington. That piano intro was Billy's own invention that he created after Allen and Ronnie VanZant wrote the song proper. He was their roadie when he showed it to them and they invited him to join the band and perform that intro for audiences live. Johnn
The lead singer 's name is Ronnie Van Zant , they took their name from a gym teacher at Robert E Lee high school name leanord skinner, who hated Rock & Roll and long hair , he later warmed up to the idea of them naming their band after him and would joke about it.
Bright Angel Olavity - I love your channel and commentary. I've called all my friends and drinking buddies at the local Pub and told them all about your journey with music from the past. Thank you for all your hard work and bringing light into these sometime dark times.
This really demonstrates southern rock n 'roll at its finest! And what you were listening to were several great musicians playing all out for people who are now your parents.
Sad to know just 3 months later, some of them would be gone, in the plane crash. Allen, the one in white, survived, but his life did not go smoothly. He died in his 30's, so just a lot of tragedy. But this is an awesome song, and video of the performance.
That Smell,Tuesday's Gone,Needle and The Spoon,Was I Right Or Wrong,Double Trouble,Ballad of Curtis Loew,Call Me The Breeze,Gimme Back My Bullets,Gimme Three Steps,On The Hunt,What's Your Name,You Got That Right are some of my favorites from Lynyrd skynyrd,Ithink you would love them too. They have an amazingly deep catalog of great songs!
Hi Ola, excellent choice. It's always enjoyable to watch first time reactions to this classic song, especially the change in tempo. Lynyrd Skynyrd was a Southern rock band. They named themselves after their gym tracher, Leonard Skinner. Sadly, about 3 months after this performance, they were involved in a plane crash that took the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister Cassie Gaines (back up singer),Dean Kilpatrick (asst road manager) and the pilot and co-pilot. They have so many great songs. The other one that most people know is "Sweet Home Alabama"
This was one of the last live performances taped for them (not included the later reincarnations, which were good, kept the songs alive and let us see the remaining band members at least until Gary Rossington died, but wasn't Skynyrd to me). There was a later show about a month later in New Jersey that was probably the last filmed. Lots of You-Tube videos for that, it's in Black and White but the recorded sound quality is a little better.
My wife and I attended a similar show of theirs at JFK Stadium in Philly one month before this show. June 11, 1977. Dickey Betts & Great Southern, J. Geils Band and Peter Frampton were also in the line up. Frampton was the headliner because of the massive success of his album "Frampton Comes Alive". J.Geils and Skynrd both blew the crowd away, so much so, that people were streaming out as Frampton hit his first notes. We knew the real deal when we heard it.
T for Texas and Call me the breeze, both live at knebworth are great songs. At this concert in England, the rolling stones were the headliners, but ALL music critics said, Lynyrd Skynyrd blew the stones off the stage!!! The stones were not happy having to follow Skynyrd on stage, and they almost all got into a fistfight backstage.
The anthem of a veneration...this concert was in July of 77....I was supposed to see them in November but the horrible plane crash in October killed and seriously hurt too many members of the band.....so this video is gold because it was probably the last time they were filmed performing.
If you dont know their story.. Lynyrd Skynyrd formed while still in high school. Their coach was Leonard Skinner. Just to piss him off they named themselves after him. He ended up being their biggest fan. Their plane crashed in 1977, killing singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, and backup singer, also Steve's sister, Cassie Gaines. Cassie watched her brother burn to death, before she bled to death. Drummer, and former US Marine, Artimus Pyle managed to crawl out of the wreckage. And with a rib sticking out of his chest, hiked through the swamp and woods until he found a house and help was alerted. You should check out the video VH1 Behind The Music Lynyrd Skynyrd.
Since this was recorded, most of the members have passed away. Between the plane crash and time have taken their toll. The only member still alive is Aritmis Pyle. He has a tribute album that's coming out. Gary Rossington plays on it. Gary was the guitarist that opened this song. Long Live the spirit of Skynyrd!
I was only 12 at the time....but many of those young ladies in the crowd were our moms, mine included although she isnt in the video, and even some early grandmothers amazing concert wish I had been there. But all those ladies are now in their 70s at least.....time flies enjoy it while you can....great react
Great reaction to my all time favorite band... love the reaction would like to see more reactions from them. I need you, Tuesdays gone, Curtis Lowe, give me back my bullets, let us cry for the bad man, that smell are just a few to check out! Have a blessed day!
You owe it to yourself to go to one of their concerts and see this song live. Clise your eyes and you can feel the energy between the audience and the band. It's amazing.
Crazy is right, this is one of the most famous rock epics ever, incredible guitar solo and a great live version for sure. Next from these Southern Rock Masters, do Simple Man, another rock classic with a timeless message. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎸🎤🎸🎸🎶
My name is Penny. I'm using my husband's account. I'm new to this channel. I want this played at my funeral. It's been my favorite song since they first came out. I'm 57 now.
Dasha, you would like Simple Kind of Man and Tuesday's Gone. Both are by Lynyrd Skynyrd. They are less frantic energy than Free Bird, and only Stairway to Heaven can even APPROACH how epic Free Bird is, but the melody and the message of Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Simple Kind of Man, or Tuesday's Gone. WOW. The charm of that era just cannot be duplicated today.
This song always sets a story off in my head. As the protagonist is telling his girl that he is a free bird and that he has to leave, I always imagine a large bird such a hawk or eagle as the slower first part of the song seems to represent the bird circling and climbing then when it high enough it begins to dive, picking up speed and soaring and break neck speed through the canyons as it heads out of town and this is represented by the guitar solos. Such a beautiful song yet rocking at the same time.
Great reaction! This was Southern rock. .I saw them do this at Memorial Stadium .in Charlotte, NC on July 13, 1974. It was Under the Stars festival. It featured a lineup of ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rare Earth, Leon Russell, Elvin Bishop, and Billy Preston. That was about 12 hours of my life I would not trade for anything! Things were different then and in many ways a lot more fun. You probably know by now the band was in a plane crash 3 months after this concert that killed several people and ended the band for 10 years. I'm looking forward to watching more of your reactions. Good luck!
This was part of Day on the Green concerts series Bill Graham would promote at the Oakland Coliseum . My girlfriend- wife would get free tickets through her work and we went to a bunch back then. All day long. All headliners
No haters please, I wasn't into Skynyrd back in high school in the seventies. If it came on the radio I'd still listen. Never bought an album, 8-track or cassette of theirs or saw them live. That said, they're a large part of the era of music I grew up with.
You pronounce sooo wright!!!! I love you!!!!!!!!!! One of my favourite song, and you choose a very rare concert, i think it was it in california, my love city is forever san francisco !¡!!!!!!s
This group contributed so much to southern rock. Check out 38 Special, Rossington Collins Band, and Molly Hatchet. All are strong guitar based music with long and wonderful solos, often with more than one guitarist.
Yes Ronnie we still remember you...
I love watching people that have never even heard of Lynyrd Skynyrd react to this song. They have no idea what is coming up and it is always so amusing to watch them get into it for the very first time.
My question is how in the hell has anyone not heard of lynyrd skynyrd
🤯
It's a ride, not just a song
you believe them ?
And when they think it’s almost over….its not. 😝
The 3 Guitar attack of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Legendary. RIP guys
Gave me chills..
I've always considered this version to be a FOUR guitar attack; very often, through no fault of his own, Leon Wilkeson, the bassist, is not considered a guitarist! These outdoor shows were major events for us back in the day. No cell phones, no internet, TV had 3 channels. But music was real!
So was America!
To this day people still yell "Free Bird!" at random intervals at random concerts.
In certain parts of the US, if you tell the officer you were listening to Freebird, you might just get out of a speeding ticket.
I did it once and inadvertently started a Freebird chant. My wife was mortified, and I couldn't stop laughing. They ended up playing the song.
saw them in chicago in july before the crash so glad i did never forget that
This is an amazing song to watch people react to for the first time😂 The solo kills me😂❤
when the Bass player is like, hi can I jam with you guys? lol but seriously the musicianship of this band sometimes gets overlooked but make no mistake about it, these boys could absolutely play with any band of their era and even outplayed the Rolling Stones on their home turf at a show.
That solo, one of the great solos of all time, great reaction. It's pure southern rock.
One of the few Bands that 3 legendary guitarists came out of, King, Rossington and the greatest Collins. All Rest In Peace.
Don’t forget Steve Gaines who is playing in this video. King left the band about two years before this 1977 tour and Gaines replaced him.
Steve Gaines to
Sorry, but not only for me, but also for Ronnie, the best was Steve Gaines, so you shouldn't forget to mention him.
Still forgetting Leon Wilkeson, bassist -- he contributes very much to this performance.
Lynyrd Skynyrd would not have been who they are without Ed King. The rest of the band was great, but when they brought Ed in the total dynamic changed.

Lynyrd skynyrd is a way of life almost 😢 every time I watch this 😢
This was the 12th, and last song in their set. They had already played 11 songs and still did this. Unbelievable.
Were you there? I was. Day on the Green. Frampton performed first, right?
You are one of the very few if not the only reactor that I hit like before the song even begins. You recognize greatness.

Uh Ohh you just went down the rabbit hole with them. LS was awesome!!!! ❤
Great reaction to my all time favorite band... love the reaction would like to see more reactions from them. I need you, Tuesdays gone, Curtis Lowe, give me back my bullets, let us cry for the bad man, that smell are just a few to check out! Have a blessed day!
Awesome, RIP LYNYRD SKYNYRD ❤
a truly excellent choice
My favorite song of all time.
Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎸🎤🎸🎸🎶
Everytime I hear/see this I get chills. I grew up in this Era.
Love to know what all them crazy girls are doing now, wow we had a great time
You are an excellent person to be making these videos please keep going. Rock on sister. 🤘❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My name is Penny. I'm using my husband's account. I'm new to this channel. I want this played at my funeral. It's been my favorite song since they first came out. I'm 57 now.
Yes, listen and react to more .......great live band for the times they were in
Dasha, you would like Simple Kind of Man and Tuesday's Gone.
Good luck!
One of Jacksonville, Florida's finest!
This was part of Day on the Green concerts series Bill Graham would promote at the Oakland Coliseum . My girlfriend- wife would get free tickets through her work and we went to a bunch back then. All day long. All headliners
One of the best there ever was. Facts
No haters please, I wasn't into Skynyrd back in high school in the seventies.
If it came on the radio I'd still listen.
Never bought an album, 8-track or cassette of theirs or saw them live.
That said, they're a large part of the era of music I grew up with.
I do think your reaction is such that you found some of the "root" of your favorite 'metal' and 'hard rock' genres.
Best closing songs in rock history.
Great reaction there Sunshine.

This group contributed so much to southern rock. Check out 38 Special, Rossington Collins Band, and Molly Hatchet. All are strong guitar based music with long and wonderful solos, often with more than one guitarist.
Best band I ever had the chance to see!!
Simple man is a great song
