I was at this Concert on July 2, 1977 in Oakland. I was fortunate to have seen the original band before the horrific crash on October 20, 1977. Incredible Show!! RIP to Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, the road manager and pilots!! Lynyrd Skynyrd's music will never die!!

You just experienced a song which, in my part of the world, is an anthem. Do not ever beat yourself up about showing emotion. I am a 67 year old Marine [retired]. An anthem for me too in Northwest Florida! And lived near Jacksonville Florida for five years as a young man in the 1980's. My favorite band of all time, Lynyrd Skynyrd!
Lynyrd Skynyrd has to be the hugest success/tragedy in the world of music, including well before the plane crash , during the crash, and afterwards, both as a band, and the individual members alike, and being as I so love their music and am so in awe of their musical skill, watching them is always a bitter sweet experience for me. Skynyrd guitarist, Gary Rossington, who plays the hypnotic slide guitar here, passed away in March 2023. R.I.P. Gary. You're as free as a bird.

I was there on July 2, 1977. I lived about 45 minutes from the Oakland Coliseum. I was 17 years old and just graduated from high school. I will never forget that concert. Loved going to those Day on the Greens where you can watch two or three great bands for $11 bucks. Most people in that crowd are now grandparents and great grandparents. Loved your reaction ❤

One of THE greatest live rock performances of all time, and one of THE greatest live rock bands ever. They played with heart, soul, passion and energy, and gave everything they had every time they walked out onto a stage. They're part of what makes Classic Rock and Southern Rock so indelible. Sadly, Gary Rossington (slide guitar) is the only surviving member of the band's original lineup. To all those incredible musicians who've gone ahead of us - we'll see you all on the other side. Until then - RIP.

Everyone talks about the guitar solo at the end by Allen Collins but the part that always gets me is the slide work in the first half of the song by Gary Rossington. Just beautiful
To me it was part 1 setting the musical picture of the regret of the couple breaking up and the high pitched riff at the build-up sounded like the bird in distress wanting to fly away>>>part 2 freedom. Thank-you Gary and Allen!

It's so easy to get caught up and blown away by the outro/ensemble to forget to think about what a well-constructed piece of music this is. In the mournful beginning, the vocalist is expressing sympathy to the one he has to leave. Then the guitarists build on the sheer passion and joy the "bird" feels once he's "free". Now, imagine you were suddenly free from all care, and could actually fly. You'd start zooming and soaring all over the sky, revelling in your freedom from being earthbound and able to explore the limitless sky. That's the feeling the guitarists are expressing through their instruments. It's joyous, it's liberating, and you can understand why the "bird" in the beginning had to leave and follow its nature to be a "freebird" and fly high, even accepting that it meant leaving someone behind. The talent and energy of the musicians and the vocalist expresses and conveys the emotions beautifully and effectively to the audience. I've always said that Ronnie Van Zandt didn't just sing lyrics, he declared them.
As an American ,and a proud southerner,lynyrd skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr.,The Allman Brothers, and Stevie Ray Vaughn speak my language. Our music is a beautiful mix of blues ,country ,rock and folk that evolved into this . Many like the rolling stones have tried to copy our style, few do it justice. Us southerners love everyone and have had to live with thr stigma of racism for far to long in this country, and I'll put our music up against any other . WOW!! That was an amazing reaction Mo. Your emotional roller coaster ride was something to behold. This concert was 10 days before my 18th birthday. My band members chipped in and bought me a ticket and all 5 of us were there in the middle of that mass of humanity. I had a GREAT time and got a helluva sunburn. It was well worth it!! The one thing this video doesn't quite convey is how incredibly LOUD the concert was. The other bands on the bill that day were The Outlaws, Santana and the headliner was Peter Frampton. What a great lineup! I remember the age of 5 or 6 band stadium concerts! In 1981 my friends and I saw "The Roundup" -- .38 Special, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws and Allman Brothers Band. In the hot July sun at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.

L S last album Gimme Back My Bullets ( a truly dreadful album) was released a month after Frampton Comes Alive. So there was no doubt who the headliner was. The pride of Beckenham, Kent. What you initially thought was three guitarists was actually two plus the Bass guitar player but then they DID have three guitarists that were great lead guitarists! I played this at my Brother's funeral in 2005. This concert was about 4 months before the airplane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines. Great video and it always brings me to tears.
Has been, still is and probably always be one of the best rock songs ever and definitely the best guitar solo ever. I can't believe Collins wrote that song when he was 17. Crazy. Not sure but this could've been one of if not the last performance for them ever since the plane crash was only three months later.

Here's one for ya. I Saw them in 1977 at the Hanner field house in Statesboro Georgia it's a sports field house and less than a 1000 people could fit in there. I was 15 going on 16 with my sister and a friend Tommy Morris This band sang THREE encodes for less than a 1000 people and this was the last song they sang but the did it twice for us.. I can still see them in my mind . I was 3 row from the stage not 30 feet away. They had just played sold out coliseum everywhere to come to a town of 30,000 and played to us like there was 300,000 people.. Not that is one helluva band. Nothing topped them since for me that day. All I can say is Wow! Just ,Wow! RIP you guys❤
What really gets me when I watch old concert footage like this, is the crowd. Watching these young adults have such a great time, but knowing that all of them are now at least in their 60s and 70s, or sadly, no longer with us, makes it a sad video to watch. This was 45 years ago, and is a stern reminder of how little time we really have on this planet. Relish every minute of it.
The guy playing the piano was a roadie for the band ! But unknown to them he was a trained classical pianist! They heard him playing his version of this song and pulled him straight into the band !

The band members grew up in Jacksonville Florida. They all would play and practice for hours on end in a small shack in a back yard. Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer who lived fast,. always said he'd never live to see his 30th birthday. His prediction did come to pass unfortunately as he and several other of the band members died in an I'll advised plane trip that that crashed . The flight was taken under treturous conditions .Ronnie Van Zant was just 29 years old.
Such a powerful song and it is also an emotional song so when you started to tear up and say sorry there was no need to I cry a lot to this song too it just shows that we are human beings

I saw them live in 75 or 76 at the Philadelphia spectrum my first concert. There are such a talented musicians and have some great songs that I still listen to. Thank you very much love your reactions😃😃 their vinyl now is still incredibly well produced and sounds great.
In the mid seventies the country was just coming out of Vietnam and music prior to that had a lot to do with protest and peace. This young guys used the flag to show where they were from, the south, and that they were proud of it in spite of all the negativity that was around the years before. The had no idea about the politics that would make it so controversial years later. This concert was in California. So the people there didn’t either. Just great music and lots of fun.
That was my generation out in that crowd. Now we're all old people. Just a little reminder to get out and enjoy your life it will be over sooner than you think.

Interestingly, if it has not been mentioned before, the piano player (Billy Powell) had been a "roadie" for them for a couple of years, when the band members heard him noodling on a piano (unbeknownst to Billy). They immediately decided to add him to the band. Thank God.
I was there. 13 years old. Bill Graham and Day on the Green. The Bay Area music scene is a shell of what it once was. Then just 3 weekends later the mighty Led Zeppelin. Bill Graham gettin it done
My mom wouldn't let me go with my Uncle in '77 (age 10) I would have LOVED seeing the original line-up of skynyrd. I did see them years later when Ronny's brother Johnny Van Zant took over the reigns. I did however sneak off with him in '78 for the Day on the Green sometime in June-july I can't remember the date. They had an awesome line-up, Aerosmith, Foreigner, Van Halen (never heard of them until that day) and AC/DC. Went back in '83 and my last Day on the Green was '84. Incredible times at the Oakland Coliseum. Great reaction as always!

As an American ,and a proud southerner,lynyrd skynyrd, Hank Williams Jr.,The Allman Brothers, and Stevie Ray Vaughn speak my language. Our music is a beautiful mix of blues ,country ,rock and folk that evolved into this . Many like the rolling stones have tried to copy our style, few do it justice. Us southerners love everyone and have had to live with thr stigma of racism for far to long in this country, and I'll put our music up against any other . WOW!! That was an amazing reaction Mo. Your emotional roller coaster ride was something to behold. This concert was 10 days before my 18th birthday. My band members chipped in and bought me a ticket and all 5 of us were there in the middle of that mass of humanity. I had a GREAT time and got a helluva sunburn. It was well worth it!! The one thing this video doesn't quite convey is how incredibly LOUD the concert was. The other bands on the bill that day were The Outlaws, Santana and the headliner was Peter Frampton. What a great lineup! I remember the age of 5 or 6 band stadium concerts! In 1981 my friends and I saw "The Roundup" -- .38 Special, Marshall Tucker Band, Molly Hatchet, Outlaws and Allman Brothers Band. In the hot July sun at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia.
As a Londoner,I assumed LS was the main act so it must have been hard to follow that !
@@Alewifes_Husband WOW! A 'Who's Who" of the greatest Southern Rock Bands of All Time. That's awesome. The nice thing about the Oakland Coliseum was it sits right next to the San Francisco Bay. So even though it was very sunny in July, a mild breeze usually kept the real possibility of heat stroke somewhat at bay.🥵 Cheers, RNB
@@Isleofskye L S was who I wanted to see. But Frampton Comes Alive was released in January of 1976 and been on the charts for a yeas and a half. Peter was hot as hot gets. L S last album Gimme Back My Bullets ( a truly dreadful album) was released a month after Frampton Comes Alive. So there was no doubt who the headliner was. The pride of Beckenham, Kent. You may know that Peter's Dad was an Art Teacher who taught Peter and his friend David Bowie(nee Jones) and David was born in Brixton, very near where I lived my first 29 years.😀

What you initially thought was three guitarists was actually two plus the Bass guitar player but then they DID have three guitarists that were great lead guitarists! Another great video is (maybe the same show) is a song called T for Texas, live 1976 here on you tube where you can really SEE all of them play!

I played this at my Brother's funeral in 2005. This concert was about 4 months before the airplane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines. Great video and it always brings me to tears.
Has been, still is and probably always be one of the best rock songs ever and definitely the best guitar solo ever. I can't believe Collins wrote that song when he was 17. Crazy. Not sure but this could've been one of if not the last performance for them ever since the plane crash was only three months later.

Here's one for ya. I Saw them in 1977 at the Hanner field house in Statesboro Georgia it's a sports field house and less than a 1000 people could fit in there. I was 15 going on 16 with my sister and a friend Tommy Morris This band sang THREE encodes for less than a 1000 people and this was the last song they sang but the did it twice for us.. I can still see them in my mind . I was 3 row from the stage not 30 feet away. They had just played sold out coliseum everywhere to come to a town of 30,000 and played to us like there was 300,000 people.. Not that is one helluva band. Nothing topped them since for me that day. All I can say is Wow! Just ,Wow! RIP you guys❤
What really gets me when I watch old concert footage like this, is the crowd. Watching these young adults have such a great time, but knowing that all of them are now at least in their 60s and 70s, or sadly, no longer with us, makes it a sad video to watch. This was 45 years ago, and is a stern reminder of how little time we really have on this planet. Relish every minute of it.

The guy playing the piano was a roadie for the band ! But unknown to them he was a trained classical pianist! They heard him playing his version of this song and pulled him straight into the band !

The band members grew up in Jacksonville Florida. They all would play and practice for hours on end in a small shack in a back yard. Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer who lived fast,. always said he'd never live to see his 30th birthday. His prediction did come to pass unfortunately as he and several other of the band members died in an I'll advised plane trip that that crashed . The flight was taken under treturous conditions .Ronnie Van Zant was just 29 years old.

I saw them live in 75 or 76 at the Philadelphia spectrum my first concert. There are such a talented musicians and have some great songs that I still listen to. Thank you very much love your reactions😃😃 their vinyl now is still incredibly well produced and sounds great.

In the mid seventies the country was just coming out of Vietnam and music prior to that had a lot to do with protest and peace. This young guys used the flag to show where they were from, the south, and that they were proud of it in spite of all the negativity that was around the years before. The had no idea about the politics that would make it so controversial years later. This concert was in California. So the people there didn’t either. Just great music and lots of fun.

Interestingly, if it has not been mentioned before, the piano player (Billy Powell) had been a "roadie" for them for a couple of years, when the band members heard him noodling on a piano (unbeknownst to Billy). They immediately decided to add him to the band. Thank God.
I was there. 13 years old. Bill Graham and Day on the Green. The Bay Area music scene is a shell of what it once was. Then just 3 weekends later the mighty Led Zeppelin. Bill Graham gettin it done
My mom wouldn't let me go with my Uncle in '77 (age 10) I would have LOVED seeing the original line-up of skynyrd. I did see them years later when Ronny's brother Johnny Van Zant took over the reigns.
I did however sneak off with him in '78 for the Day on the Green sometime in June-july I can't remember the date. They had an awesome line-up, Aerosmith, Foreigner, Van Halen (never heard of them until that day) and AC/DC. Went back in '83 and my last Day on the Green was '84. Incredible times at the Oakland Coliseum.
