    Welcome to Minivan Camper Gal! I'm Kelly and I camp and travel in a Chrysler Pacifica Minivan, doing part-time van life. Here you will find van build videos, tips on the digital nomad lifestyle, general travel vlog videos, and more. I'm into minimalism, and I eat a mostly plant-based vegan diet. I'm still learning how to do vegan vanlife well! I have some great vegan camping recipes to share with you, but would love some suggestions, too! Sometimes I stealth camp in the city, but mostly I like to boondock. Join me and my camper van as we embark on all the car camping adventures!

    I've been considering one of these for camping after using a box solar oven (RIP) for years. Although you don't have to change the angle of solar ovens often, if you anticipate the movement of shadows it will be more effective when you spend time away. Facing the sun, it moves from your left to right in the Northern hemisphere. With your back to the sun, your shadow slowly moves from your left to your right as well. Same direction as reading! Position the GoSun where shadows from buildings, trees, and vehicles won't reach your solar oven during the cooking time. Inside of the vacuum tube, it remains hot like a thermos, and if the food is hot enough, continue cooking while clouds pass by. If you start with the shadow of the sun dial slightly to the left of center, it will gradually center after you leave it and move slightly to the right of center. Have fun experimenting with your new oven!😅

    When I taught hands-on energy education to teachers, I had instructions for make-at-home (or classroom) solar cookers. I did test runs with my kids before teaching teachers. My kids and I compared 3 designs one day at the beach. We cooked hotdogs, burgers, and mini pizzas. The kids got a kick out of having a hot lunch at the beach after a morning of swimming. The ovens were simpler design and larger capacity.

    You also have hot water for your bath/shower that's cool.. Keeping clean and caffeinated, 2 of my biggest concerns boondocking 😂

    I would use only in emergency situation when my stove broke or I ran out of butane/propane. I seldom plan ahead far enough to say, "I'll want coffee in an hour!"

    I got a little bit of yellow cake mix water, powdered egg and a squirt of oil, threw in a couple of crushed walnuts and a few raisins, topped with a crumbly topping for a crust spooned into the little baking pan and made a coffee cake snack. It was mid 40;s outside and intermittent sun but worked great. The sunnier the faster, Items near the opening take longer so meats should go in first and veg last to avoid over cooking the veg.

    Greetings from AU. I found your channel a few days ago, and watched a few of your videos.
    First up, I'd be too scared or wandering around in the U.S. forest (scared of bears), but I guess you'd be scared of all the snakes here!
    I love your ideas for the sink. And forays into solar cooking are very interesting.
    I'm building my van, and have a lot of solar on the roof to use an inverter. (gas cooker emergency only).
    Doing research on solar ovens tho now- I've seen one recently for school use made out of a pizza box. But looks like, get organised and with the right gear it could be possible to cook a roast!

    I've had one for years and broke the tube twice, just moving it around. The go-pro mount doesn't always work on a replacement tube. I also have a stereo inferno. The larger tube that "Blue Van Dan" has with the gosun electric 12 volt tray let's you cook without the sun, just like the biggest gosun ovens.

    I have the next size up and I love it, though I haven’t used it last year at all because of too much travel. I can’t imagine having a little one it just doesn’t look feasible. If I’m cooking chicken thighs in mine I can get enough, plenty. But, if I’m cooking vegetables it’s not enough. I’m glad I did not buy the small one. It looks like too much trouble. I can’t imagine spilling something on the inside of the case.

    • @minivancampergal1554
      @minivancampergal1554  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, it’s pretty small! I’m glad it doesn’t take up too much room, but we’ll see how it actually does out on the road. It’s more of a supplemental cooker, lol.

    Im so intrigued by solar cookers. The one thing that deters me is the time involved. A whole hour for boiling water? Is it worth it? I could be hiking, swimming, walking the dogs, etc. I suppose I could plan around that, though, right? I can hardly wait to what you cook in it!!

    • @minivancampergal1554
      @minivancampergal1554  Рік тому +1

      It cleans up pretty well. It comes with a round scrubby thing to help clean it. It's pretty non-stick. I suppose if anything really got stuck on, you could boil water in it to clean it.

    Could probably slow cook soup in the tube. Also bake potato wedges, sliced peppers etc. in it. No roasts in that cooker. 🤣 Also too slow for morning coffee. I’d take a pass on this thing. Gas is quicker. Gas is better too if there is no sun. I suppose for emergencies if you can’t get butane or propane it might be good. Free energy too.

    • @minivancampergal1554
      @minivancampergal1554  Рік тому

      Yeah, I usually use gas. But when I'm running low or conserving, it's nice to have a completely free way to boil water!

      @@minivancampergal1554 I have a couple dark colored rubber hot water bottle that I fill and place on my dash when driving during the day. When the water gets hot enough I transfer it to a large Yeti thermos to preserve the heat and use this to shower. At camp I place the rubber bottles out in the sun to get heated. Failing that I just heat the water with propane!
