Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- Here is another performance of the 'Vivace' from Widor's Organ Symphony No. 6 in G minor, this time played on the organ of Winchester Cathedral!
This performance is an extract of a service I played there recently - the organ voluntary for Choral Evensong.
This'll be the last time I upload a performance of this piece for a while - I promise!

Magnificent, thank you so much. I was lucky enough to sit beneath this organ at the commemorative service for the late Queen. Initially, I was disappointed not to get a seat in the nave as the place was packed and we were running late. In fact, I had the best seat in the house, in my opinion. I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!! I had never paid this organ a great deal of attention before but certainly have since. Looking across at the people opposite you could see the sheer wonder on their faces at the sound of this fantastic instrument. It was as good as it gets. 😀
Could listen to that all day! One of my favourite organs! 👏👏
perfect tempo, Richard - allowing the music to breathe in that terrific space.
FAB!!! What more can be said about Richard? Always perfect like Mary Poppins!
👏👏👏 Delightful and wonderful to hear the Applause after!👍😄 True appreciation for the Artist and his work.🙏💕
No need for an apology as there can NEVER be too many performances of any of Widor's organ works, in my humble opinion! And what a splendid performance you give, Richard, of the 'Vivace' from his Organ Symphony No. 6 in G minor. The recording equipment you have used here really captures the magnificent sounds of the Winchester organ and the overall effect of your playing is just thrilling. I'm not surprised you got a round of applause at the end: very much deserved! BRAVO!
Cheers Graham. It was recorded from up in the organ loft, so the placement of the mics wasn’t ideal. I hope to return to the cathedral to record it properly at some point!
Brilliant performance there Richard. I am an occasional volunteer there in the Kings and Scribes exhibition. I am told the organ is to be completely restored this year.
My late Mother and Aunt used to play this organ, apparently the time-lapse terrified Mum so much she only played it the once!
Bravo!!! This is just super and I will never tire of hearing you play from this magnificent symphony. Impeccable in every way - perfect tempo. Thank you 😊
Fabulous Richard. It must be a pleasure for you to return from time to time to this marvellous instrument with which you are intimately familiar. You certainly deserved that applause at the end!
It’s lovely to go back there to play as often as I can. It’s like meeting an old friend 😊
Outstanding performance...glad to hear it on the Winchester Cathedral organ. I spent a couple of weeks in Winchester a few years ago, and attended as many Evensong services as possible. Gorgeous in that great space...
So cool to see you doing this for the liturgy
Love how controlled and musical your performance is. Bravo!
Cheers James! Do you play any movements from this Symphony?
@@beautyinsound Not yet 😄
Get on it 😎
Absolutely loved this recording. I've replayed it several times already. The organ sounds fantastic even if the microphone placement wasn't up to your usual impeccable standards. 😉 Thank you for sharing!
Really great clear performance
A superb live performance Richard of this fantastic finale of the Widor VI. Well played, well done.
Winchester Cathedral is one of my favorite cathedrals. Beautiful organ!
I wondered when you might post something performed at Winchester Richard - I'd absolutely love to hear more of this instrument which is underrated IMHO - perhaps a future project Truro style could be achieved. Keep up the incredibly good work, along with a few others you have transformed the quality and accessibility of organ music online and I appreciate it every time I view one of your recordings.
Wonderful Richard. What a great piece. Well done.
Another superb performance of this gem. Thanks for sharing it!
You really can play!👏👏🌺
Magnificent Sir Richard 👏
I could listen to you all day.☺
Been waiting to hear you play this organ again Richard … fab playing. 😇
Really enjoyed this.
Bravo - thoroughly enjoyed, a firm favourite of mine and a marvellous instrument 👏🏻
Awesome!
Will you be recording this organ too? (Like Truro and Gloucester) 🙏🏼😇
Hopefully one day soon!
Great hearing the applause! Well deserved Richard! I was constantly wondering if Nala or Bobby would appear!
I’d have been a bit surprised if they had!!
Bravo! I love this piece! Thanks!
Great to see my “home” instrument, where I took lessons from Anthony Caesar! (And was also a virger…)
Winchester Cathedral Organ sounds great included with its long Nave. Will you ever do a recital with you playing this organ?
Sounded great on my headphones. If I'd played that at my church (were I able), they'd have all left by the end with barely a titter of applause.
Can I purchase the organ works on DVDS and CD 's and how much ?
Oh it'll take a fair few more renditions before I get tired of it. It must be awesome having access to so many brilliant instruments.
Might be worth playing it back at x2.5 speed to save your time!!!
@@beautyinsound 🤣
Very nicely done! 👌So often this is a done as a race to the end! Refreshing to hear it as you did here.
Great to hear the Winchester instrument sounding so good after the recent work. Would love to see a video of the whole Evensong service from the organist's point of view. Any chance of this in a future video?
I too would've like to see the whole service, or at least the parts Richard needed to be involved with.
No work has yet been carried out, but it’s due to be in the coming years. Don’t really know any details about it...

Very well played!
I look forward to playing at Winchester in a few days.
Ah cool! Visiting choir?
@@beautyinsound Yep! They're here Monday to Sunday next week.
COOL!
👏👏👏👏 Bravo! 🎹🎶
Bravo! thank you, Richard! Any chance of you and Caroline doing another recital at the Cathedral some day? :-)
I’d love to, but unfortunately they’d charge me an entire hire fee to use the cathedral which is a ridiculous amount of money.
@@beautyinsound Really? not as much as my friend, he was asked for £3000 to hire Coventry
Beautifully played.
I teach a Master Class in Organ performance
Every one of my students has Organ shoes. I tell them to never play in stocking feet!
Why are you playing in stocking feet?
My students are going to get the wrong idea if they watch your videos.
Thank you.
Dr. Stephen
Sorry Stephen - I don’t want to be a bad influence!!
I play in both and socks, simply because playing in socks reminds me how to feel my way around the pedals in a way that my organ shoes cannot. I used my shoes for the Dudelange recital last week, especially for the pedal solo in the Bonnet.
I think it’s very beneficial to be ‘ambidextrous’ with shoes and no shoes. Shoes are good for technique, no doubt, but socks is crucial for feel.
Perhaps something to consider?
Play and let play ❤️
took me a second to recognise the new organ console
Haha, well my new organ will look very similar to this!
Have you mentioned what you program/app you are using for the device and is there a Bluetooth switch to change pages? Great performance!
It gets asked a lot - it’s ForScore with face gesture recognition.
@@beautyinsound Awesome!
@@beautyinsound Wow! Blink right eye to progress, left eye to begin repeat. Clever!
Can never get enough Widor ! :D
When out in the field- so to speak- what do you use to capture the audio ?
Sounds fabulous...
A bit of a random setup - two Neumann TLM170s plugged into a cheap TASCAM portable recording device, and placed far too close to the pipes. The microphones were directly opposite the main case which meant the pedal division and the nave division aren't overly audible. It's all i had time for on this occasion. I hope to get a better sound mix of Winchester n the future though!
@@beautyinsound May I ask which Tascam ? I'm guessing you also went "manual" rec level- with a pre-set test ?
I'm asking as I record organ recitals at my local cathedral and am looking to improve things :)
Very impressive. Widor in socks..
I always struggle with the triplets on the second last page
Change the rhythm so the triplets are quaver-semiquaver-semiquaver. It’ll really help I promise!
Will try! Thanks!
ALEGRO PLEASEEEEEE
Jesus Christ is inside thank you solei deo gloria
I would rather you play Winchester Cathedral while playing a Vivace halter top. LOL
A "Vivace halter top"? You'll have to explain...
Awesome!
Thanks!
