Tina’s high voltage dancing and gruff vocals were the perfect compliment to Ike’s musical genius and his super tight band’s thunderous musicianship. All the drama stirred up by the movie “What’s Love Got To Do With It” has overshadowed music’s first real power couple, the man who invented Rock’N’Roll in Ike Turner, and The Queen of Rock’N’Roll in Tina Turner. This documentary seeks to tell the true story. The documentary includes exclusive interviews with Ike Turner's daughter Mia, his son Ike Jr., former Ikette Sweet Randi Love, and former road manager Ricky G.
It's interesting to hear from their family members. Tina was estranged from her family, even her grandchildren. Everyone else can't always be in the wrong. I believe like most celebrities, Tina carefully crafted her image. As she reinvented herself, being portrayed as a battered spouse who never did anything wrong and only fought back once then ran for freedom wanting nothing but her name is a profitable narrative. Even people who may not like her music will still feel sympathetic towards her. I've read Tina's book and Ike's book. I believe the truth is somewhere in between. Ultimately, Ike didn't appreciate Tina and that was his loss. He learned that the hard way. It would be nice to get a real authentic and unbiased documentary on Ike and Tina. Their story has become folklore but their influence is underrated. There's not enough discussion on Ike's innovation, like how he became a successful bandleader as a black man in the 1950s or the talented blues musicians he discovered for white record executives. There's not enough discussion on Tina and the Ikettes setting the standard for female performers by incorporating high energy dance routines. People don't talk about how Tina was a sex symbol of the 1960s and 1970s. People don't talk about all the songwriting Tina did in the 1970s or that she kept her songwriter royalties as part of her divorce agreement with Ike. People don't discuss enough that Ike and Tina were global ambassadors for soul music in their heyday. I can acknowledge their dysfunctional relationship and appreciate their talent. It's a shame that their influence often gets overlooked.

Wonderfully put together. Wish this were something that could be on Netflix with a bigger budget, they deserve it. The media has dragged the authentic life of these two and made it something so over produced and phony. And honestly so do the fans. So much biased info and strange one sided arguments. Wish people would read both of their books and stop referencing the movie. Listen to all of the people who knew them and see how complicated and real their story is. When y’all are ready to create an authentic Netflix or HBO doc let me help!

Tina was a strong woman in a toxic environment I don’t know where she got the strength from to put up with Ike’s bullying I loved how she one day had enough and left with only what she had with her she knew it was her time, I’m sure Ike deep down was a good person he was just messed up from drugs and power and the wrong people advising him, they were both great artists I just wish their lives had been better for them and their kids, may they both continue to RIP and their troubled life stay closed as they are not here to answer to any of it so people should respect that & stop arguing over things they can’t change it’s done

Tina's past would have still been told if she didn't have a book on her life story and becoming successful. The dark side of the media would have dug into it. So it was best she told it herself. Tina said that she thought coming out with the book would put an end to people asking her about what happened with her and Ike, but instead, it made it worse because that's all people wanted to talk about.
Good I was looking for a decent well put together documentary more in depth into Ike and Tina turner revue and interviews with close people who were there with them as they were when they both rocked as a power house RocknRoll couple who were back then a cool power rocking duo making a place in music history

This was a great documentary. Either way, this man was the inventor of Rock N’ Roll - a black man, inventor of Rock N’ Roll. I’m glad he got his music redemption when he got that Grammy.

I wish Ike and Tina had reconciled before they passed. I get that ike did a lot of horrible things to Tina but he did apologize. I think it would’ve been amazing to see them both on stage older, just one last time.
So nobody is going to mention that he took his 13 year old son out of school to go work in a studio full groupies and drugs? And the only person who was concerned about that was Tina? And people still have the nerve to drag her? And now the poor dude is in jail over crack and his lower teeth are missing. Unbelievable.

I'm convinced that Ike severely abused Tina. But I question some parts of her story. How did she sing with a broken jaw and how did the third-degree burns on her face leave no scars, for example? According to "I, Tina", Ike was insecure and violent because of childhood experiences, and the cocaine made him evil. Tina also says in her book that he asked her, "Why are you talking to me like that?" although she said nothing. Maybe it was because he heard voices in his head-his last wife Audrey said he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He had some good sides, such as being generous to Little Richard and others and writing songs with a positive message ("Make 'Em Wait", "Why Can't We Be Happy?", "Workin' Together" ...). For sure, he was not a psychopath. From a musical point of view, he was a great band leader (B.B. King said, "He's the best band leader I've ever seen" and "He hears things that I don't hear"), a multi-instrumental virtuoso with a unique whammy-bar style, and a creative songwriter and arranger combining different genres (which is how he created rock 'n' roll).

Did Ike ever beat Ann Thomas? We hear all this about abusive but yet Tina's family talked to Ike until he passed. Does that make sure? Her own sister who she continued a relationship with was close to Ike. So how bad was he?
That's what people like to say but in Ike's book he said that Tina's mother, sister and niece refused to have anything to do with him and he also said that Ann Thomas didn't speak with him either. I think Ann Thomas started taking care of him once he got ill. The book was published in 1999 and Ike passed in 2007 so maybe during those years the family reconciled after father time had his way with Ike and he was no longer such a menace. But no one really knows the extent of any relationship they had with Ike. I've read that he used to beat Ann Thomas and one of his last wives testified in court that he used to beat her as well. But considering they divorced in that late 70's to 1999, that's a long time they may have stayed away from him.
Go read the book Disney watered the book down. It was too horrible to release as a movie .

My guess is that she simply couldn't deal with any connection to the Ike centric thug life on the chitlin circuit. She always had bigger aspirations and read voraciously about the rest of the world. I think it was inevitable, she wanted to be a citizen of the world and expand her horizons. Her objective was to be a big fish in a bigger pond. Ike sensed he would never have her charisma and he was relegated to stay a medium fish in a small pond. Whether he ever even got the chance to entertain any dreams of growing and enlightening, in both business and spiritual matters like she did, we were never told. He may have dismissed such as impossible or irrelevant. He was an immensely talented and troubled man who paid a very high price for both his actual and imagined or falsely portrayed sins.
I think you’re being a bit cynical. I think the truth lies with Tina, not somewhere in the middle between Tina and Ike. Ike admitted a lot of things himself, although never fully took responsibility. Tina was not estranged from all her family either. She was very close to her sister and one of her sons in particular. Some of the kids were not actually hers, and had their share of problems. She tried to help them all. She and Ike were always on the road so they were raised a lot by nannies. As for the truth about their relationship, her side of the story including Ike’s brutality, has been widely corroborated by many of the folks that were there. Ike was a talented man, but a hyper controlling, brutal personality. And a huge drug addict who ended up in jail because of his spiralling addictions. She actually didn’t like all the discussion about her domestic violence but journalists kept on talking about it. You’re right that their musical influence and performance ability has been under-rated because of the focus on their relationship.

Not sure who created this, but I watched it. My only issue is that all these loved ones talking about Tina, were cut off by Tina. She didn't just cut off Ike, she cut off all these people and family associated with Ike. The reasons for that are hard for me to understand. I respect all the people and loved ones who provide their stories here; but none of them literally seem to have had any contact with Tina post 1980 something, which is 40 years ago. Until that is explained, all these accounts and stories seem incomplete. Tina could have easily mentioned all of these people in her life after she left Ike. But she didn't. Why? Why did she cut all of yall out of her life?

The documentary is not about disputing Tina's version of events. As flawed as Ike was the fact remains that he is the creator of rock 'n' roll music, the music that The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Bruce Springsteen, and thousands of other artists have made millions from. He was half of one of the greatest music duos in music history. Just as George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were not discredited for their accomplishments even though they were slave owners neither should Ike be discredited for the many accomplishments and contributions he made to music because of his imperfections and abuses.

Tina was resentful and exaggerated her claims. Ike admitted that they had fights and he made decisions but Tina was not innocent. She never mentioned abuse in her divorce petition which would have helped her get the alimony and property she wanted. She made an offer that he declined which was to continue performing with Ike but she wanted a divorce mainly because of his infidelity. For years after their split, Tina claimed she was still friendly with Ike. She even said she'd consider reuniting with him for a performance after she established herself as a solo artist. This is recorded on tape. Then in the 1980s she reinvented herself and created the victim narrative. She milked that until her death. If Ike had compromised with her during their divorce I am sure there would be no abuse stories.

Tina's story changed a bit through the years. Every time she had a new project to promote she happened to remember more details. In the 1980s she claimed sex wasn't the issue with Ike but in her last book she said sex was a kind of rape. She used to say she was not a victim and she didn't like being portrayed as weak but then she continued to victimize herself for decades. Tina said she was done talking about Ike in 2013, but then continued to talk about him until her death. She remained resentful because she never got closure. If Ike had given her the alimony, child support, and property she wanted she probably wouldn't have created such a one-sided narrative of their relationship. You can look at Tina's face and see she was not disfigured. If she had burns on her face there would be scars. I don't that she ever had injuries after one of their fights but the extent of the violence in their relationship has been greatly exaggerated. Craig had other issues that probably tormented him like having an emotionally distant and absent mother. Whatever issues he has with Ike seem to have been resolved at the time of his death. Craig attended Ike's funeral. Tina didn't even have a funeral. It speaks volumes that she didn't have some kind of memorial service with her surviving kin in attendance. Her family didn't even participate in her last documentary. I'm sure they were tired of Tin berating their deceased father/grandfather for decades even after he died. She never cared to think about how her actions affected her family. Tina knew she was more articulate than Ike and had a bigger platform. She didn't talk about the offer she made to Ike to continue performing with him during their divorce proceedings. If Ike was so bad to women he wouldn't have remained good friends with a few of his ex-wives, including Mia's mother Ann Thomas. Ike had issues but most people who were around Tina and Ike say they didn't witness violence. Some even claim that Tina was the violent one. She did choose to stay with him all those years and as the old saying goes, water seeks its own level.

And as far as ppl not seeing him hit her duhhhh he never did it in front of ppl. They knew because the next day she would show up disfigured behind glasses.. Ike was a coward. And all them ppl like Ann Thomas stayed friends with Ike even after she use to have to hide canes and walking sticks from him because he would beat her with them. He even broke that woman's arm.

Mia wasn’t truly acknowledged by her dad. She was one of many children with various mistresses. Ike acknowledged Michael, Ronnie, Craig (adopted)Ike jr, and that was about it. He never paid too much mind to any of the others. Mia wasn’t there. She talked like she was there but she’s relying on hearsay to formulate her ideas.sadly for all his genius, Ike turner has substance abuse issues and mental health issues as well.
Mia was there but she was young. There are photos of Mia with Tina in the early 1970s. I read old interviews where Mia was counted as one of Tina's children. After Ann Thomas had Mia she returned to work for Ike and Tina. Mia and Ann Thomas are in the documentary Ike & Tina On the Road: 1971-72. Ann Thomas was with them until the end. She was in the car with them when they had their last fight. She then married Ike herself years later. I'd love to hear from her since she was very close to Tina and Ike.
All you have to do is watch their body language in interviews and you can tell he was abusive. As far as his money, she turned all of it down in the divorce and only wanted to keep the TURNER name so she could still make a living. And THAT too, is recorded in an interview.

Theres an interview where he admitted to punching her and other forms of abuse dont matter if the movie amped it up its hollywood get over it the fact of the matter is hes still trash no matter how you argue it.
Tinas' best friend was telling the truth. There were other folks in the back of the limo when Tina and Ike had that infamous fight. Also Tina seems abusive as well, whooping those kids with extension cords and making them scrub kitchen floors.

She also cooked them good meals, tried to provide some structure in their lives when she could and she financially supported them. Cared enough about her step son that she didn't want him using drugs and staying up all night in the studio. Maybe he should have listened cause he ain't missing his lower teeth because of Tina I'm sure. And even Ann Thomas daughter still considers Tina her mother.
