  • Check it out! Did we have too much fun?
The Posse usually gets out for live music once or twice a week, sometime three, but in Episode 14 we get it in for a four day in a row Marathon: Friday July 13th through Monday the 16th.
It is such a blessing to have the Posse, grown folks having fun together and supporting live music in New Orleans at the same time. That's a win-win, and it may be making a difference. Live music is popping up in more places and ways.
Episode 14 actually presents two different aspects of the live music business in New Orleans.
There are two "club" sets, in this episode Friday night at LeRoux's featuring old school singing group BRW and Saturday night at Jas, featuring neosoul singer Dave Lemon and his group, the Fleaux (FLO). In these sets the owner of the venue hires an act and hopes to turn a profit with cover charges and food and beverage sales. These tend to be weekly shows, but with different acts, often in a monthly or 5 to 6 week cycle of talent.
The performance business set up featured in this episode are artist self-produced shows. "Smooth Jazz Sunday" with Big Frank and L'il Frank at The Four Columns, and Monday, "Sharon Martin and Friends" at Cafe Istanbul. ("Friends" in this episode include Dex Daley on steel drums and vocalists Rechell Cook and Stewart Marshall)
Forv Smooth Jazz Sundays, Clark Knighten, his 4x4 Connection Band and his Black Cat Production team have engaged a wedding/banquet facility on Sunday evenings, normally down time for the venue. They have the same musicians every month, but the featured performers are different each month. That "month" thing is a recurring theme.
Sharon Martin and Friends used to be just "The Sharon Martin Show", but wisely Sharon and her team started bringing others to perform in the once monthly shows. Its a unique New Orleans music tradition of sharing the limelight. Some of it is planned and some not. Whoever shows up with their instrument (and Sharon knows they can play) or with a song (and Sharon Knows they can sing) will get stage time. This keeps her monthly shows different enough to attract virtually the same crowd every month. In Episode 12 Danny Alexander does the same kind of stage sharing at Jas, creating a variety of experience that allows regulars to come back weekly.
Sweet Lorraine's Jazz Club ( featured in Episode 7) has embraced both business styles, Fridays and Saturdays, generally reserved for traditional "set" business, but on Sundays, they've found a group of performers who promote themselves, sell their own tickets, and the club makes money on food and beverages on what would normally be down time at the club.
So, for me its more than just having fun. I am board chair of the New Orleans Tourism and Culture Fund, NOTCF.com. (No, I am not paid to do this)
Supporting this culture can be so much fun! Come on out and Jam with us.

Thank you, Lloyd and Ms. Ann, for coming to the "shows". And my goodness, thank you for showing the show with All My Friends who come out to network and have fun. The 15th of the Month at Cafe Istanbul and My Friends, including my band, Anthony Hamilton (who was out that night but replaced by Mr. Angelo Nocentelli) on bass; Alonzo Bowens on Sax, Shannon Hamilton on drums and I and Michael's son-in-law, Cleveland Boney' on piano on the first set and Mr. Kurt Brunus on the second set. And, of course, my friends that came out: Mr. Dex Daley (steel drums); Mr. Julius Handy (sax); Percy Williams (trumpet); Ms. Arlee Leonard; Ms. Holly Bendtsen; Mr. Stewart Marshall and my baby, the one and only Ms. Rechell Cook. I thank them all for their contribution to such a wonderful evening. Since its inception in October 2023, these evenings have been just wonderful. I look forward to these 15th of the Month evenings. Fun and joy. My heart literally gets full. The love. The love, The Love! Thanks, Lloyd and your team including the Gaspards; the Marshalls and Jerry and Gwen. I will push folk to subscribe to your page as I have.
