- Listen to songs of Yemaya to honor and connect to this Orisha. Yemaya is one the most important Orishas in the Yoruba Religion. She is the protector of women and governs everything pertaining to women; childbirth, conception, parenting, child safety, and healing. Yemaya has a duality because she is a river diety and associated with the ocean. She is associated with the Orisha Olokun. When Olokun was on Earth and interacting with the other Orishas she was betrayed by her spouse Orisha Oko. Olokun cursed the earth and went into solitude. Yemaya saw Olokun's pain and hurt and Yemaya consoled Olokun to the halfway point of the ocean through her grief. Due to Yemaya's caring nature, the Orisha Olokun made Yemaya the intermediary between the earth and the top of the ocean. Olokun chose to never reveal herself to not go through that shame and so Yemaya is associated with both the river, the ocean, and Olokun.

If you didn't get permission from the God Yemaya i would highly recommend you change your beloved daughter name. The Gods to not like that. It is known as Divine appropriation.
