Anthony Hopkins said in an interview when discussing his role as Hannibal Lecter, that the best portrayal of a mad person he'd ever seen was Kathy Bates in Misery.
This thriller is almost Hitchcock in it's simplicity. Predominantly set in a single location with just two characters going at it. Kudos to the director for keeping it lively and interesting.
In Stephen King's book that this movie is based off of, there are several interludes throughout it. These are chapters of Paul's manuscript that Annie is making him write. They are in a typewriter font but the N's look handwritten in since the N key is missing on the typewriter.I though that was a nice little detail tossed in there.
I find it really sad that the actor who played Buster the Sheriff ended up taking his own life 10 years later. He was such a witty, loveable character. I imagined him to be like that IRL. RIP.
In the novel she doesn’t break his legs with a sledgehammer. Instead she chops off one of his feet with an axe and jams the stump in the fireplace to cauterize the wound.
Crazy to think how Rob Reiner got finished with When Harry Met Sally, and then within a year went on to direct this nerve-wracking suspenseful nightmare, the guy's a really versatile director. I think this is up there with The Shawshank Redemption as the best Stephen King adaptation, unbearably tense direction, a brilliant script, and two powerhouse performances from Caan and Bates, it's a masterpiece
“Shoulda bought a squirrel…” 😂😂 Guys, that’s one of my favorite movies of all time! Best reference ever. “…with the climbing the trees, and chewing the nuts…” 😅🤣
One of the craziest psychological horror thriller movies ever made! This is also a cautionary tale on how dangerous and toxic fans can get sometimes when their favorite character or heroes get killed off in a TV series or movie. This is how it is today, and this is what's going on all over the world.
Crazy and dangerous fans are the reason why so many celebrities are standoffish. It is not widely known but some celebrities receive death threats so they cannot afford to be all friendly with their fans. Some years ago, A crazy lady went to David Letterman‘s house. I don’t know where but at some point that same woman purposely stepped in front of a subway train and was killed. When his son was still young, somebody had threaten to kidnap him. Some crazy guys claimed that him and Madonna were supposed to get married. This was in the 90s I believe. On top of all that, scammers are now pretending to be celebrities and proposing marriage to gullible people. Some of these victims might try to approach the real celebrity because they think they are in a relationship with them.
I just want to point out someone in the movie. The older woman calling about Paul is one of our biggest stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, the beautiful Lauren Bacall. Even songs have paid homage to her🔥🔥🔥
3:15 - "Sometimes it doesn't go well for writers," By the way, those other "things don't go well for writers" movies that you mentioned, The Shining and Secret Window, are also based on Stephen King stories.
as somebody who’s read the book multiple times, the characters are very accurately displayed in the movie, tho i must say that the novel is a million times scarier.
I just watched Stephen King give a talk. He said Annie was one of his favorite characters to write. Her and the boys in The Body (The Stand). I thought he'd have said Rolland from the Dark Tower series. I love him.
This came out the same year as home alone. My daughter was three. When I took her to home alone, she slept through most of it. But of course she was wide awake when I want to see Misery. I tried to keep her eyes covered because she wouldn’t go to sleep.
The tv series Castle Rock has a bunch of the characters from Stephen King's universe in it, including Annie Wilkes in her youth, and shows her back story. It's brilliant.
After this movie came out, no one ever wanted to introduce themselves (or be introduced) as "your biggest fan" ever again. A friend who knew I loved Debbie Harry introduced me to her once as...you guessed it, "your biggest fan!" and I wanted to yell "No! I swear I'm not!" lol
such a great classic with two powerhouses: Kathy Bates and James Caan. my favorite Kathy Bates/Stephen King film is Dolores Claiborne and I highly recommend it because if you think she did well in this one, you ain't seen nothin' yet! also, glad you're feeling better Robert!
Sherlock is a good comparison as Doyle tried to kill off the character to get out from under Sherlock Holmes and he was later compelled to return, which lead to some unlikely plot twists.
So... Was Gen-X the only generation who grew up seeing all the R-Rated & Horror movies before we were old enough to do so? 😂 It makes me laugh every time I hear people say “Our parents didn’t ALLOW us to watch these movies when we were kids”. Meanwhile, I remember going into R-Rated movies at drive-ins and theatres without anyone stoping us and our Boomer parents letting us rent anything but XXX rated movies at the VHS rental shops (After all, if we did not rent them, we’d see them 6 months later on cable TV with our illegal TV decoders 😅 Some of those movies made the hobbling scene seem like Sesame Streets in comparison 😱)
I was 4-5 when for Easter Sunday + my birthday & a cousin's birthday party...my uncle had "The Exorcist" playing. I saw all of the slasher flicks as soon as they were on VHS even though I was supposed to be sleeping...I just watched from the alcove that led to the bathroom because it never made sense for me not to see these made-up, make-believe stories as real. The few "real" movies that could be real, our parents either watched with us, and explained certain points so my Xellenial mind could comprehend it. But I mean, my folks were big on a lot of newer thoughts of mind regarding certain things up to an extent regarding my age.
Yeah, I don't really understand parents who expose their kids to extremely scary, violent or sexual stories. There is something to be said for protecting the innocence of children. My sister didn't even have a TV until her kids were teenagers, and that was before smartphones or the general availability of the internet. I don't think they feel like they missed out on anything by not watching people get dismboweled when they were three.
Hope you get around to watching The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, and Stand By Me. FYI - Kathy Bates is another Stephen King movie - Dolores Claiborne.
The Dinner Scene, with the Wine Spill: the Penguin Figurine is facing back into its correct way, back to its original orientation, facing outward, in the shot, showing us that Annie knew the whole time and that she spilled the wine on purpose! ❤ the content keep up the great work u guys!
In 1980, King was approached by man and asked to sign one of his books. The man asked him to sign it to "My number one fan." That was Mark David Chapman.
Glad you are both blessed. I was in a horrible car accident in January and I got F-ed up pretty good. Was in the hospital for 3 weeks. I'm not tryna one up you just tell you I feel you and I understand. Love the reaction and I'll keep you in my prayers. 💯
The one thing I could never understand was Annie making him bring Misery back to life. If the manuscript was burned, uh, technically Misery didn't die.
The story that Misery died in was already published and sold in stores. The first manuscript that was burned was for a completely different story that didn't include Misery.
Kudos to you for knowing who Rob Reiner is. do you know him as a Director but do you also know that he was meathead on all of the family? And his father, Carl Reiner, is also famous.
There is a series called Castle Rock. The entire 2nd season gives us Annie Wilkes ' and why she is the way she is.Theres also a first season you may like.
i've read Christine, Salems Lot and Pet Sematary a thousand times each...seen the movies a thousand times each. i love Stephen King. I read Misery one time and saw the movie just one time because thats all i could handle. some things are just to much for me because something like that could really happen and no doubt has at some point in history. the cruelest animal in nature is mankind and its cruelty has no limit...just trying to keep things on the bright side ya know 😜
In the book she chopped his left foot off with an axe and later used an electric knife to cut off his left thumb. In the movie she just broke both his ankles with a block of wood and a mallet
Great movie Great reaction. Another Rob Reiner movie adapted from a Stephen King story you should check out is Stand By Me. If you haven't already seen it, of course. It also has a phenomenal cast of young 80s stars. And a great soundtrack. After watching the movie for the first time, King told Reiner it was the best adaptation of his work yet.
Whoa I'm really late to the misery party, lol. This was my 2nd Kathy Bates movie; the first was The Waterboy and she was so nutso that I wanted more! She's scarily good at lunacy and yeah.. "hobbling" scarred me for life. Edit: I totally forgot she was in Titanic lol. Even here in T'dad there was a mad mob to see it, I was almost crushed by security with the gate (being of less than average height and smallie). Only saw it once lol
30:48 No no! The one liners have to have something to do with the weapon. "What's the matter Annie? No cutting remark?" "I think you can see my point, Annie!" "One think I like about you, Annie. You're really sharp!" "You may think you've got control of me, but I've got the edge!"
The book is amazing, but with Kathy Bates as this insane fan going full on banana on him, it's perfection. I love her in everything. She can do it all. Fun, psycho, loving, racist, empathic. There is no role she doesn't own.
1. A mustang isn't a very good vehicle to drive in the snow. 2. Red flag #1: Anyone that says "Oogie" 3. The way she responded to the fire in the BBQ pit when he threw a match on the book: What do you expect? 4. In the book Annie chops his feet off (not just hobbling him). ❤❤❤❤You 2 Rock, Stephen King is My Fav Have read alot of his books and i have watched Alot of his Movies. This one in particular is Wicked. Kathy Bates is Great and the rest of the cast. Thank You. Very Much, Keep up the Great Work.❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊
I watched this when i was 11 and absolutely (my parents really didnt bother eith age restriction etc as lived in the middle east so srx was never in moviesv) we all loved it but " that scene" omg it freaked us all out. Lol
All the films and books you mentioned about writers wers all written by Stephen King. That includes Secret Window and the Shining. James Stewart was a photographer in Rear Window. King likes to be in his stories. Protagonist is often a writer.

John Wick 4 MOVIE REACTION @ ua-cam.com/video/SOc23AdMb0c/v-deo.html
😎movie
Stephen King was so impressed with Kathy Bates's performance in this movie that he wrote Delores Claiborne specifically with her in mind.
Rear Window is a must watch as far as classics go.
If you think the movie is scary, read the book. She is REALLY crazy in the book.
Every reaction channel uses **that scene** for the thumbnail, because nobody is ever the same after seeing that.
Yup. Just like 2G1C.
Legit
It's crazy because the book version is even worse! She straight up cuts his foot off and cauterizes it with a blowtorch!!! It's horrific.
Anthony Hopkins said in an interview when discussing his role as Hannibal Lecter, that the best portrayal of a mad person he'd ever seen was Kathy Bates in Misery.
Bates turns Wilkes into the nastiest nurse to reach the screen since Louise Fletcher tormented Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
This thriller is almost Hitchcock in it's simplicity. Predominantly set in a single location with just two characters going at it.
Kudos to the director for keeping it lively and interesting.
Yet ironically, even with this main character, less misogynistic than Hitchcock. 😉
Most of the movies I've seen that are set in a single location with just two characters going at it have been in a VERY different genre.
@@Darth_Conans Better soundtrack too, I bet. Ha Ha!
Then toward the end, the typewriter threw the E! The most common letter of all!
King was HUGE on using Colorado for many of his stories; its what gave him inspiration for "The Shining."
I love watching people react to the hobbling scene lol
I find it really sad that the actor who played Buster the Sheriff ended up taking his own life 10 years later.
He was such a witty, loveable character. I imagined him to be like that IRL. RIP.
In the novel she doesn’t break his legs with a sledgehammer. Instead she chops off one of his feet with an axe and jams the stump in the fireplace to cauterize the wound.
Cool
She also sliced his finger off with an electric knife because he complained about a letter not working on the typewriter
Crazy to think how Rob Reiner got finished with When Harry Met Sally, and then within a year went on to direct this nerve-wracking suspenseful nightmare, the guy's a really versatile director.

Omg I love that reference lol! “You should have bought a squirrel!”
Rob Reiner knows how to make Stephen king adaptions come to life.
“Shoulda bought a squirrel…” 😂😂
Guys, that’s one of my favorite movies of all time! Best reference ever.
“…with the climbing the trees, and chewing the nuts…” 😅🤣
New sub! #RatRaceHomies
It's a race. It's a race. I'm winning! 😁
One of the funniest ever movies.
One of the craziest psychological horror thriller movies ever made!
This is also a cautionary tale on how dangerous and toxic fans can get sometimes when their favorite character or heroes get killed off in a TV series or movie. This is how it is today, and this is what's going on all over the world.
Stephen King met one of those fans. They had broken into his house. This is where this story originated.

Kathy Bates was the perfect actress to play Annie.

The novel is always scarier.
Iam a huge Stephen king fan and i haven't read the book ill have to get it soon!
"Should have bought a squirrel." 🤣🤣🤣 I love Rat Race!
A Sheriff with Buster's experience surely would not have went to Annie's home without backup.
His only backup seems to be his wife
Probably the only movie I've seen that the audience cheered when Annie got it at the end
Kathy Bates is masterful in her dramatic roles.. in “Dolores Claiborne”, and in “Primary Colors”.. great films!
One of the best movies out there. I became a Kathy Bates fan after seeing this. She will always be Annie Wilkes
You referenced Rear Window, one of my favorite movie reactions to watch!!! Enjoyed this one too! 👍
I just watched Stephen King give a talk. He said Annie was one of his favorite characters to write. Her and the boys in The Body (The Stand). I thought he'd have said Rolland from the Dark Tower series. I love him.
This is a GREAT movie adaptation. I love Stephen King. Kathy Bates won an Oscar for this.

You mean "for awhile" not "ever again" by the 2000's everyone was saying it again.
such a great classic with two powerhouses: Kathy Bates and James Caan. my favorite Kathy Bates/Stephen King film is Dolores Claiborne and I highly recommend it because if you think she did well in this one, you ain't seen nothin' yet!

I agree about Dolores Claiborne fantastic movie the whole cast was 👩🍳 💋
I was pleasantly surprised to hear you’re opening theme which I believe was the movie of the week from the 70s or 80s.
Sherlock is a good comparison as Doyle tried to kill off the character to get out from under Sherlock Holmes and he was later compelled to return, which lead to some unlikely plot twists.
You, Annie, and I have a thing in common. I hate cheap ways out with continuity errors when they write themselves into corners. Dirty Birdies!

Just depends on your parents. Same as before. Same as today.
Stephen King had a fan creep him out like this, then he wrote this book 😂
This is sarcasm; he actually said it was based on his addiction to alcohol and cocaine
Oh man, I could've came in earlier, but I knew I'd miss the Hobbling reaction!! LOL
Awesome! Thank you! Love you guys doing non-modern movies!
Hope you get around to watching The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, and Stand By Me. FYI - Kathy Bates is another Stephen King movie - Dolores Claiborne.
She's (Misery) from Bakersfield, Ca. She's just one of the many references King uses to show how awful Bakersfield is throughout all his works.
Bakersfield Rules!!
If you watch CAREFULLY toward the end, when he's ALMOST DONE with the book, the letter 'N' suddenly appears on his typewriter.
The Dinner Scene, with the Wine Spill: the Penguin Figurine is facing back into its correct way, back to its original orientation, facing outward, in the shot, showing us that Annie knew the whole time and that she spilled the wine on purpose!

I think she also knew he stole pills. If she noticed the penguin, there is no doubt she knew how many packs were in the closet.

This was so fun to watch you enjoy and have real reactions to this genius movie.
In the book she chopped his left foot off with an axe and later used an electric knife to cut off his left thumb.
In the movie she just broke both his ankles with a block of wood and a mallet
Cool reaction. Cheers from Argentina.

I can't remember all the SK books I've read but a good amount of his protagonists were writers/ journalists/ authors.
I'd recommend Rear Window for the channel, not so much Secret Window.
Ok I was excited for this for you guys but damn it this is Vanessa’s best reaction lol😅 it was soooo good all of her I love you!!!!! 🎉

I think they were trying to indicate Munchausen by proxy for Annie. Although I don't know for sure.
Fried Green Tomatoes or Dolores Claiborne. DC is Stephen King. Kathy Bates is in both.

Mathew NOOO!!! Anne Shirley will be heart broken, again.
Remember no one should be an Annie Wilkes.
i love how its like misery 7 Untitled lol
As bad as the movie is it is mild compared to the book, in that she chops his foot off with a fire axe and uses a blow torch to cauterize the wound.
King said Annie's character was an allegory for cocaine
Annie is cocaine
She actually cut his foot off in the book.
This is a brilliant movie, Cathy Bates was brilliant as Annie Wilkes, what a complete psycho.
In her Oscar speech Kathy Bates apologised to James Caan for the hobbling scene and said she is his number one fan. 🔪 🐖 🔪
