Hey Mate! Have one of your Mechanic Buddies show you how to pack bearings. There's a faster way.
    Great Video

You saved my bacon yesterday as I was fretting getting the old races out of a friend's trailer hubs. This worked really well, thanks for sharing!

Love the video. Those bearings are not 'packed' as you need to force the grease right through the race. Either scrape it off your palm until it goes through or buy a $30 packer from a motor parts store and the job is done in seconds. What you've done will get you home in an emergency though. Edit - I'm definitely going to grind down an old set of cones like you did - it's brilliant!

Tip; u can also just cut through the old race with the angle grinder so it has a slit in it. Will fit straight through and pull out.

    Or...
Pop your bearing races in the freezer
Your hub in a low temp oven.
And just place them in gently with your fingers
(No Grease required, as you don't ever want the race to turn in the hub)
No bashing, No hammering, No Swearing, No Special Tool.
They will "Shrink-Fit" once everything returns to ambient temp in a matter of moments.
Of course, this method isn't so great if you're stuck on the HWY....
But simple if you're home like shown in this video

Do you ever use a bearing packer to really make sure the inside of the bearing is packed with grease rather than just trying to work it in through the rollers??

Dont put grease in the hub where the bearing cup sits home. The last thing you want is the bearing cup to spin. That area should be clean and dry.

As a mechanic and trailer maintenance professional all I can say is "don't try this at home" The reason you use punches and drifts when driving bearing cups into hubs is, two hardened metals (hammer & bearing cup) do not mix, they will crack or shatter if hit to hard or the wrong way, always use a punch made from mild steel, brass etc. This is not the way to pack wheel bearings, you should use a bearing packer or "scrape" the grease from your hand into the bearing. This is a how not to do video.

Sorry Mike and thanks for the heads up. We were more talking when you get stuck on the side of the road as it's small enough to leave in the glovebox. We should have added it's best to take it to a professional if you don't have the necessary equipment. We don't have that kind of thing as we only do them rarely and this method has got us out of trouble.

Mike, you're absolutely right. I was taught years ago to tap the race in with a brass punch. I no longer do that and bought a simple press to install the race. I've got an old race that I ground down to fit. I saw this on a video. It's so easy to install the race this way. I was confused as the way Ryan was packing the grease. It wasn't right to how I was taught. I'm glad you clarified that. I use a bearing packer and then I still pack the bearings in the even it missed something by pushing more in with your method. You should do a video on this.
As for Ryan, if I'm packing bearings on the side of the road as you just stated I want to do it the right way. If I'm relying on this trailer and see it smoking I should have an extra hub ready to go. Keep it with your spare tire. I saw two trailers this summer smoking and grinding to a halt. Obviously, the poor bastard didn't maintain his bearings like he should.
I re-pack my boat trailer bearings every year in the event water got in them while putting a boat in the water. I also use bearing buddies so that water doesn't get in the bearing. Maybe I re-pack more often than I should, but I don't want to be that guy on the side of the road.

Mike really. "Don't try this at home?" I need to leave my trailer at a "professional" shop for a couple weeks, pay $100 per hour shop fees, so a "professional" can install a $30 set of bearings. Sure a press and drifts would be nice, but how often would I use it. Probably couldn`t even find them in a year or two when i needed them again. Shade tree mechanics have been successfully replacing bearings since the Model A using punches, old races, sledgehammers, 2x4s, old screwdrivers, C-clamps, short iron pipe, and whatever. Ryans not rebuilding a transmission. "Might crack or shatter" a $5 race. Wow. Thats almost as bad as throwing a rod through my favorite short block! "Use a packer or scrape the greece from you hand." It might not have been pretty, but that bearing was plenty primed. Really don't think you will find Ryan on the side of the road because he didn't use a packer. Best thing about a packer is it only packs your bearing with greese, and not the cuts in your hand, your finger nails, or your Willy Nelson T-shirt. This was a fine how-to-video for the man or woman who likes working on their own stuff. There are not many things left that don`t require a computer or degree in micro space management. Ryan , I know you don't want to alienate any viewers, but I think you were too kind to Mr. Professional.

Michael, but don't you agree that a brass punch should be used so not to damage the race? Instead of using the harden steel. Remember, you're talking to guys that don't do this all the time. You're talking to guys who maybe repacked bearing once or twice in their lives.

@@beebob1279 I spent much of my first 18 years growing up on a dairy farm in Kentucky. Learned how to fix a lot of stuff. Often using whatever we could find. Sometimes using just bailing wire. LOL. I've used "everything" I listed, at one time or another, changing bearings. I have to confess, I've never owned a brass punch. I searched out a set online last night. Plan to add to my tool box today. There's no denying the proper tool makes everything easier, better, and safer.

    • @RyanMoodyFishing
      @RyanMoodyFishing  6 років тому +2

Thanks mate. To get them out just take wheel hub off the trailer and punch it 9the sleeve) out from the back. Lots of videos all ready on youtube. You don't have to worry about damaging them getting them out. Its getting the new ones in is usually the issue.

Haha. Yeah we’ve read the comments but funnily enough, he’s been doing it this way for thirty years and hasn’t had one fail yet. And that’s a charter fishing guide using the boat daily, sometimes touring long distances, for thirty plus years.if that’s not a successful trial I don’t know what is? He did make this video as a DIY on the side of the road but he’s actually never had to do one on the side of the road to date as he’s never had one fail. Guess he must be super lucky.
