Here's some context I wish the video had included: this was a two-part filler story by a different creative team that the one the book normally had. Before these two issues, Conan had his regular look, and it came back after the two issues ended. This was a filler issue, not a "brand new era" for the character. Also, the issues that came after this had incredible art by Alcatena, which I very strongly recommend
One of the big influences on this run of Conan was Bisley's work on Slaine: The Horned God. It's may not be quite as obvious as the Image influences, but when you look at the distended figure of Conan with all the veins, etc, it's very Bisley. Just poor Bisley.
Around that time they put out a few black and white magazine reprints of classic BWS and John Buscema Conan comics, I picked those up instead of the new series and never regretted it.
I had stopped buying comics by '96 but I worked at a comic shop and can distinctly recall putting this book on the shelf. To go from John Buscema and Barry Windsor-Smith to...this? Sacrilege.
That's awesome to hear Jim bought those 3 Conan comics off the newsstand. I somehow managed to get the jim lee one and have always wanted the todd mcfarlane one
Regarding Jim's comment of having these types of inks over a more 90's style, check out Mike Deodato's run on Avengers, probably around this same time and I'm almost certain was also inked by Tom Palmer. I also think this is possibly the same Joe Bennet that did the Immortal Hulk series, which is quite stunning visually...you guys should check it out and show some of it on the channel.
Would be cool if you guys picked up Joe Bennett's Ravage 2099, where I feel he came to his own style. He retained the proportions on figures, which makes me agree that, yes, he used Liefeld/Jim Lee embelleshing and composition but he had his own chops. Especially, with the Greg Adams inking. If this is the only coverage you guys do on Bennett a lot of fans will just echo chamber that he's a chump. Love the channel, but I can never dig when an artist gets put down carelessly.
Real question. @cartoonistkayfabe ! The 2 page spread with the arrows. Are we to assume the artists don't know about the simple storytelling of putting the arrows behind the figures? Do they not know or not care? What are reasons for poor executions like this?
Awful Time for being a Conan Fan. They canceled the Adventurer Series for this and upped the Price from 2 to 3 Dollars. A few Years after this John Buscema did a few Stories wich he inked. You should try to get Those.

I bought some of those. Still have them. 🙂
9:15 the back of the neck with its own panel and the bottom right word balloon halfway in a teeny panel with nothing else 👀
The current Titan Comics Conan by Jim Zub is pretty rad, a good throwback to classic sword and sorcery Conan
That’s a Hank Hill butt.
This caused Robert E Howard to role over in his grave...
I have this issue signed by the artist, who happens to live in my city.
If we are talking licensed comics you should check Top Cow's Battle of The Planets. Top tier stuff.
Thanks for the informative discussion and engaging narrative. Marvel sure went to strange places in "96.

This is not Buscema or BWS, or anybody with an iota of being able to do good sword and sorcery imagery.
It's somebody who wanted to do S&S in the style of 90s superheroes.
I've always said Tom Palmer could make anyone look good. Looking at this, I clearly don't know what I'm talking about.
ROFL you guys cracking me up! @13:54
Did I see this is Joe Bennett? Future Artist of Immortal
hulk?
Bennett did some pretty good work on Thor in the early 2000s, but this is execrable.
@@alandimes579 I feel like his run on Hawkman is where he really started to refine his style.

wait wait wait... you made street angel?
I think a member of Bloodstrike took Conan's place in this story

they already did Ravage 2099. Joe is currently working on AlphaCore w Chuck Dixon in the Rippaverse if you're interested. Personally not a fan
My eyes! MY EYES!!!
I do love Conan. I guess I'll skip this issue 😆
🔥🔥🔥🔥
So many veins,,,,,,hahaha

Laziness, stupidity, lack of experience, and an editor who is not doing his job.
For the love of God, what fuck is this??
“Conian” 🤘😁

I watch you guys to help improve my art. This is not helping. 😁
This Conan desing looks like Liefield's Shatterstar, I read some Conan's miniseries from the 90's but this is awful. 😂
Uhhhhh, the thumbnail alone hurts
Late Conan from Marvel was horrible, the distinction between the 70's and 80's stuff turning into the 90's is just Titanic sinking fast.
The color really isn’t doing this book any favors at all.
Lol just awful cover
So bloody awful.
