  • in 1957 Hills Department Store was founded, it grew in popularity in the 1980's and mid 90's due to its large selection of toys and low prices. until in 1999 it filed chapter 11 bankruptcy and was purchased by ames until 2002 . when ames also declared bankruptcy. these are my memories of the store and the smell of the snack bar or popcorn and corn dogs and of course slushies

I used to work at Hills. The management was amazing. They paid you every week and you could cash your check at the store. One strange thing is early 80s they would not accept credit cards. That's funny to think today. They were such a step above Kmart on every level.

We had one about 15 Min from me miss that store a lot so many great memories. Such friendly staff, clean stores. People took pride in their stores unlike Walmart who simply employ lazy people and let their store get filthy.

I was a Hill's employee in '82. Pay for hourly workers were made strictly in cash. I'll never forget waiting in line at the cash office window while the office girls counted each pay. Best retailer I ever worked for.

@@popscola2574 No, but it would have been cool to have one of their popcorn machines. I was promoted up to Hill's Field Operations Headquarters in Aliquippa Pa. and stayed there until '93 when I saw their end coming.

What I remember of Hill's snack bar was that they gave out a free bag of popcorn to each child below a certain age . So that's one of the things I remember and missed once it closed down .

I worked at Hill's in the early 90's. I worked in Housewears, and had to stock shelves and assist customers. I often had a feeling of having to be everywhere at once. It remains today, my most unfavorite job of my entire work experience.

Hills was my favorite store all time next to childrens palace. I do wonder though if Hills would live up to its reputation today, or was it just a thing of youth and being a child with no responsibility. Even if Hills returned it would be filled with 2022s inventory. We wouldn't have the same toys, Nintendo systems and games, snacks, apparel etc. So itd essentially be a walmart and walmart blows.

When I was a kid it was Hart's and Hill's . Hart's were owned by Big Bear . My first Nintendo was from Hart's . And I remember Hills like it was yesterday . Chillicothe Ohio is were they were located . Both of them had great snack bars . Hart's had great root beer floats and Pink Cow's and Hills had cotton candy . I'm glad I got to experience that time period .

I remember Hill's customers were actually normal. It wasn't the hillbilly hang-out that you get in a Walmart today. Going to Hill's as a kid was a real treat.

When I was a little kid we moved to mentor Ohio from Boca Raton Florida . Even though We only lived in mantar for about 6 months I vividly remember The hills Christmas commercials of 1990. I remember the one with the old couple receiving a Chia pet from the kids in the shape of Ulysses S. Grant. It was funny as hell but we moved back to Boca in early 1991 before Hill's went under. I also remember this supermarket finest but I guess they will under shortly after we moved is well.

Aleksandar Ivanov omg, I worked at a Hills department store and literally lived on their nachos.the best cheese sauce ever! It came is a large food service size can. It was thinned out with milk and water because it was so thick. It was kept warm in slow cookers. I have yet to find a nacho cheese sauce that yummy. Always a perfect consistency! Thanks for bringing back that memory.!

I was just telling my stepdaughter about Hills! She never knew about it! I remember when the Super NES came out and they were the only store to have one on display. Kids were lined up waiting to play it! They were on one end of the mall with Mcgommery Ward on the other end and Woolwarth's in the middle. Not long after Aims got Hills, the mall got shut down and demolished to make way for Walmart to go in its place.

I grew up in Youngstown Ohio. We went to Hills all the time. I worked there in 92. My 2 sisters in law worked there at the same time. One in la away and one in the snack bar. The soft pretzels were the greatest. Never found a good one since. Frozen Comes were my favorite. My Mom liked the popcorn. I worked in the women's dressing room. I remember the fireworks that Hills would have on the fourth of July. Good memories!

Hills and Ames stores were staples of my youth growing up in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The smell of the hot dogs and freshly popped popcorn still comes to mind whenever I recall going to their stores. I didn’t get much of my wrestling merch there, as there were tons of places in my hometown that sold WWF toys, posters, t-shirts, and ice cream bars. The first piece of WWF merch that I remember getting was a first or second generation bend-em of Mankind from Family Dollar with the original ‘96-‘97 brown attire. I’d love to get another Mankind bend-em and possibly one of Owen to keep packaged for a display one day, however, they’ve been tricky to track down these days.
