  • So today’s vlog is a bit different. It’s about the books I love and recommend, over and over again. Now, please know that books do not replace the practical work that one must do to heal and restore health back to the autonomic nervous system. After all, I think it is pretty safe to say that we can’t learn how to do open heart surgery via a “how to manual” in the same way we might learn how to cook lasagna from an Italian cookbook or fix a leaky faucet from a UA-cam video.
    But that open heart surgeon? When they would’ve started their medical training, they read and studied A LOT of textbooks (and if they are lifelong learners, they continue to refer to old texts and read new material when it comes out).
    The same goes with healing trauma and learning how to restore and regulate our nervous system so it can function better: It is not just a theoretical pursuit. Nor is it solely practical. It’s both.
    All this to say, books serve as an important first step. ENJOY!

    I have read 2 of these books and they were great. I hope to be able to get back to 'the body keeps the score' because the first time I read, every chapter triggered me heavily. I kept reading and kept bawling for days. It was cathartic but now I don't remember its contents 😧

    Thank you. This was helpful. Ive read 4 of the books. They helped me understand myself & others.
    Waking the tiger
    The body keeps the score
    Nurturing resilience
    When the body says no.
    I didn't understand everything because I'm a novice, but understand enough to aid in healing.
    They can be triggering & overwhelming to realize how much I have to process/release & how deeply trauma has effected me but hopeful that I can heal ❤
    Thanks for adding the neuro sensory exercises. They have been helpful, as your 21 day program has been, in regulating myself. ❤

    Thank you so much! I have already read "The Body Keeps The Score", "Nurturing Resilience" (had to titrate this as it brought up a lot of old stuff but so clearly written - one of my favorites!), "The Brain That Changes Itself" and currently reading "The Brain's Way of Healing".
    "Evolve Your Brain" by Joe Dispenza is an excellent book on neuroplasticity - very technical in the anatomy of the brain and how it works but worth the read! Also, "Rewire Your Anxious Brain" by Catherine M. Pittman and Elizabeth M. Karle was an easy read and excellent in explaining the amygdala and it's role in perceiving threat/stress and the importance of being aware of how the system works to assist in healing. Another I am reading is "Belief Re-patterning" by Suze Casey which helps "flip the switch" in thought patterns. One of my "traumas" as a child was a lack of guidance in talking through my emotions so I often get stuck at the end of a trigger loop so now I am using this book to activate my inner coach to assist myself in re-building the neural networks to create a new perception which leads to different outcomes in my reality. I use that in tandem with what I have learned in your 21 day nervous system tune up (currently on day 21! And then going to revisit some modules).

      Hello. I hope you can read my question. Do you think that "The brain's way of healing content can be easily applied to trauma/mental issues healing? Just bought it.
      I just read your comment. "Belief repatterning" sounds like a book with more practical advice. I am fed up with theory. @activebalanceyoga 😔😓😁

    I was unable to finish reading "When the Body Says No." Reading chapter after chapter about different forms of abuse was too much for me. It triggered emotional flashbacks. Are there books on your list that focus more on recovery?

    • @teamlyon3109
      @teamlyon3109 4 роки тому

      Hi Cassie, Seth here from team Lyon. Bessel van de Kolk's book, 'The Body Keeps The Score' is much more focused on recovery and a good read. Also, I highly recommend Irene's free, 3-part video training, Healing Trauma, which goes into the science of trauma, and explains in-depth what is needed to heal it, more completely than Bessel's book in my opinion, but that book is still good. irenelyon.com/healing-trauma

    Do these books actually TEACH people how to heal their nervous system? I don't need to read about how trauma impacts the nervous system because I've already experienced that first hand. I simply need to know how to regulate my nervous system and am having a difficult time finding any resources.

      Hi Lance Sunshine, Jen here from Team Lyon. I'll link to an article that might be helpful, and Peter Levine's books are helpful in understanding the survival responses and how they relate to healing trauma, I'll share a few titles below. I'll also link to a few of Irene's resources that relate to freeze in case you want to check them out.

    I like idea of recommending books, but unfortunately most books about psychology are completely useless and not helpful if someone is not professional. I've read so many of them. Basically all written in same fashion. You'll learn all the whys. Why this happened ? How this developed ? and so on(most chapters about it). There will be also a lot of author's bragging, how cool he/she is by finding/inventing a technique, solution or discovering something and so on, but as far as offering solution and explaining what to do now, there will be nothing, still suggesting that reader should go for theraphy, buy a certain product or another book and so on ...
    From mentioned books "Body Keeps the Score" is actually well condensed pill of knowledge and pointer to possible solutions, so that one is actually worth reading by anyone.
    On the other note "Waking the Tiger" is for me, most disappointing and time wasting book I've ever read. Lots of bragging, lots of knowledge about brain, animals and so one, but author was very careful to not share anything helpful with a reader. "Meat" of the book, which are always last chapters and reasons why people want to read a book, cause they should offer some solutions were very thin chapters about ... helping person in a imaginery future accident and some vague and short time filler about traumatized children ... Yeah, right someone is reading a book about trauma to prepare himself for future accident that he might witness or to "learn" that some woman overcomed PTSD just by imagining a tiger ...

      I actually found Waking the Tiger to be one of the most useful books I've ever read! It helped me make connections with tools I HAD or ones that I'd TRIED to use because now I understood what was actually happening internally. I'm so glad that Peter Levine 'bragged' (and I think he's just excited about what he's discovered, which he should be!!) about his work because his material has been invaluable in my life. Not as a standalone, but important nonetheless.

      Oh and I don't mean this to invalidate your experience at all, I just wanted to throw in my experience for anyone who hasn't read Peter's work and might benefit from it :)

      We need to share with each other the books that actual are heavy on ways to help ourselves. I manged to find a few but the ideas didn't resonate with me at all, had they been helpful for me I would have remembered and shared.

    • @norbidrake
      @norbidrake 4 роки тому

      @Free Spirit Academy Maybe if someone is rookie in trauma field, then yeah, he/she might benefit from understanding basics, but as far as solutions "Waking the Tiger" offers nothing. I don't know what he discovered, cause he didn't share anything practical in his book. He wrote how cool he was by "curing" woman from PTSD by telling her to imagine a tiger, how cool he was by telling eskimo man to feel his pants when he was hunting before to overcome PTSD, he mentioned "felt sense" which is basically focusing on your physical sensations and most book is about brain, animals and stuff like that, so I'm asking where are solutions to a reader who is trying to deal with his own trauma ??

    • @norbidrake
      @norbidrake 4 роки тому

      @radfaraf Yeah, the problem is that most psychological books are focused mainly on "what"s wrong and how this happened ?". Many books are explaining it all very nicely, but in terms of solutions still nothing so it's hard to recommend books like that.
      "Body keeps the score" is a good pointer to possible solutions. After reading it I started learning recommended Internal Family Systems therapy and it's very easy and useful form of therapy, including self therapy, so I can actually recommend "Self Therapy vol.1" by Jay Earley. This book is 100% about IFS therapy on practical examples, so reader can learn how to perform IFS therapy on himself. IFS let's you easily and quickly uncover all resistances and teach you how to heal wounded parts of your psyche. It's great mind therapy, very useful, but some form of body therapy would be full way in healing trauma, but I was not able to find any useful book in that matter.
