    i LOVE ysaora's energy! you can see how different a mentality that professional competitive athletes have when it comes to having pride and confidence without being defensive. she was so genuinely excited for eugene to score on her and she was really encouraging him to really go for it. i feel like sometimes when pros are in these types of videos where they spar against amateurs they can't help but feel defensive about their area of expertise, but i felt like all she had was genuine enthusiasm to teach and share her love of the sport with the guys

      I do another kind of fencing sport, its a huge difference facing an overall untrained person compared to someone who already is a sports fanatic, especially combat sports. They know how to move and how to adapt the moves you teach them. Also there is an innate understanding of distance as well as trying to hit someone while nit beeing hit yourself. While someone who is just trying to find his legs normally is just a predictable dummy to move around and outmaneuver those people always have an aura of threat and danger the moment you enter their reach.

    You know what would be an epic Olympic sport, kendo. But the All Japan Kendo Federation has no plans to make it one, because they say that if you make it all about winning then it loses its essence. I get that, but kendo matches are wild.

    If you define fencing as "practice with blunted swords," Ysaora is correct that it originated in Ancient Egypt. Modern Olympic fencing originated as practicing (foil) for a duel (with epees). As a fencer, coach, and referee this was a fun intro video. It would be cool if Eugene sticks with the sport, he showed some promise.

    • @ezramatan5233
      @ezramatan5233 2 роки тому

      Yeah. As a fencer it kinda startled me, épée was never really a sword for “practicing/drills” but originated from dueling. Foil was used for drills instead. I don’t know how she got that wrong, mistakes happen I guess.

    • @Shannon-zp6yz

      Let's not forget Sabre! The most exciting of them all ;) but not originating from duelling like the others

    Wait, what are the ropes attached to the fencers for? Did they address that?

    • @ExplosiveVitality
      @ExplosiveVitality 2 роки тому +53

      The ropes are wires that attach the fencer’s weapon, lame (the gray vest worn over the chest in foil), and sometimes the button of the mask to the scoring machine so it will only register points when hits are made with the weapon in those target areas.

      @@beitermf You would not believe how many times that's the guess!
      The cables end in a receiving plug the fencer's body cord plugs into. The body cord snakes through the arm of the jacket and plugs into a receiver in the back of the bell guard, thus connecting the weapon to the scoring system.
      From the plug at the end pf the reel there is 20 meters of cable spooled up on a drum inside a casing (which look to be under the floor here). From there, there's another cable called a floor cord that goes from the reel to the scoring box.
      As an armorer, I've long since lost count of how many foils and epees I've rewired or otherwise repaired.
