  • Welcome to my first-time watching as we react to The Sixth Sense (1999), a spine-chilling film filled with suspense and twists that made watching this an unforgettable experience!
Directed by M. Night Shyamalan this movie takes us into a world filled with supernatural mysteries, sequences that will make you second guess what is real and what is not and a story that has left it's mark. The story of "The Sixth Sense" follows Dr. Malcolm Crowe, portrayed by Bruce Willis, as he helps a young boy, played by Haley Joel Osment, who is struggling and claims to see and communicate with the dead.
This film was filled with this incredibly eerie atmosphere and kept us engaged as we uncovered the secrets. The incredible storytelling and performances were truly magnetic and the emotional ending was definitely surprising but welcomed.
We hope you enjoy our reaction and commentary as we discuss this film and it's place in the thriller genre, how brilliant Shyamalan was in his execution and planning of the story and why The Sixth Sense is a must-see for anybody that is into filmmaking! Thanks to all of you who suggested this film and thank you Denise for recommending this film many many times throughout the years. I'm so glad I watched this!
So sit back and relax as we go into the world of the supernatural, filled with suspense and heartfelt moments.

The point of a poker face is NOT to show what you are feeling - like a full stone cold nothing on display.
      No noises and no faces.

When Haley went to audition for this role, the casting director said that the first thing that impressed him about Haley was that he was the only one who showed up wearing a tie. The second thing was how well and flawlessly he read and already knew his lines at that stage in the process. They asked him how did he know his lines so well in such a short span of time. He responded that he read and studied them three times the night before his scheduled audition. Of course, they were amazed and replied, "You read and studied your lines three times last night?" Haley replied, "No, I read and studied the entire script three times last night." It was a done deal. Game over. Haley was also a straight-A student by the way.

If you think the kid is a great actor on your first watch it gets better on the revisit.
It starts with him RUNNING to the church to hide from Malcolm - the current ghost that is hunting him.
He ignores Malcolm as long as he can in abject shut down terror - it even takes him a minute to verbally respond to the ghost doctor.
Cole actually learns to help ghosts by consciously deciding to help Dr Crow when he opens up to Cole about his marriage. This is when Cole tells him his secret. Then when they say goodbye at the end Cole knows the doctor is going to pass over and stop appearing “I’m not going to see you anymore” and so he helps his favorite ghost at this moment. “try talking to your wife when she’s asleep”.
The fact that Cole has known since jump what was up but that this one ghost helped him see that they weren’t all angry monsters but just lost.
    It’s just so good.

And, to me, the most amazing thing about Cole's character is that he TRUSTS, this dead guy that randomly pops up in his life. All the ghosts around him TERRIFY him, but he decides to trust this ONE GUY. Just....amazing.

Thank you for giving props to the actor who played the older Vincent. He’s often unsung but he plays the hell out of this role, a young man who has been traumatised beyond comprehension.
For the record that’s Donnie Wahlberg, one of the founding members of 80s boy band New Kids on the Block and brother of Mark Wahlberg.
Lots of roles in this are underrated. Olivia Williams as the wife Anna has to play two simultaneous roles, one for those who have seen it, one for those who haven’t. She nails both.
Toni Collette is hardly underrated but my god is she good. This mother doing her best in an impossible situation, at the edge of her rope and desperately trying.
    It’s all just… so good.

Then when she returns and shrieks at the open cabinet doors and drawers, his hands are still there. _He never left his seat!_ We know everything open was supernatural because it's a spooky movie, but the handprints were meant to help convey that fact.

Such a joy to see someone go in unspoiled to this one, even now, nearly _25 years_ later (no YOU'RE old :) and have it hit just as hard. Just a masterful movie IMO - writing, directing, acting, score, everything combines to hit it out of the park.
(appreciate the shout out to Olivia Williams too BTW - as Malcolm's wife - who I became a fan of after this and who I think delivers a fantastic performance but maybe doesn't always get the love because hers is a smaller role. She absolutely convinces as both a wife disengaging from her husband and then later, when we know, as a grieving widow who _can't_ disengage from her husband. And if that's not enough, she's actually English so she evokes all that while doing an American accent to boot :)

I was one of the lucky ones who saw this in the theater when it came out. People were walking out asking people waiting in line to see the movie, "Did you already see it or is it your first time?" And when like a third of the people in line nodded that they already saw it, which was a big surprise to the rest of us, the people asking would go, "Don't say anything! Don't say anything!" And the rewatchers just nodded and said nothing! I even asked a couple in line who nodded, "you saw it already? When?" because it had just come out that weekend. And they said, "Yeah, we just saw it, got back in line," and then immediately looked away as if to indicate "conversation over now!" Lol. I remember thinking how weird that whole experience outside the movie theater was prior to going in.
The reaction was so similar to the reaction in this video. I remember thinking, "what is she talking about?" after she asked him "why did you leave me?" I thought, she's the one who's been ignoring him. And then everyone gasped at the exact same time, so loudly, when Malcolm holds up his hand and there's no ring on his finger.

(2001). The next movie I saw him in was in 2015; a story where he's a college student, working on the issue of time travel. For me Haley Joel Osment’s performance is the most amazing thing about this movie and there are so many amazing things happening here. How do you get a young child to give an Oscar worthy performance that would be difficult for an adult to accomplish? I think his character is why it is so easy to fool us because you are so concentrated on the horror of what this young child is going through that your brain doesn’t have time to process anything else. Good films have layers, not only emotional layers but also story-wise, character-wise and so on. This movie is great. And you would think that watching it a second time would remove from the greatness, but it doesn’t it makes it better. The acting from Haley Joel-Osment is incredible. I don’t know how he was able to be this convincing. Of course, the adults in this movie as well (Bruce Willis and Tony Colette). Thanks for sharing your reaction with us. I didn’t expect tears, but I totally understand them.

I love when one person knows the twist and the other doesn't. Makes for a fun reaction. Plus you get the full explanation, because the one that knows had time to process what they saw the first time. Now watch it again now that you know.... Totally different movie experience.

It is a pity that Osment doesn't do much anymore. He's just an incredible actor, he was as a kid and still is today.

I saw this at the cinema when it came out - everyone was REELING at the twist! Perfect example of a MUST SEE TWICE film.
Please do a deep dive on the incredible Toni Collette - that scene in the car…..😢❤

The reaction of the dad was amazing. You see the love and the loss, then the hurt and betrayal. Rage as his world falls apart around him. He has every emotion ricocheting around inside and he is trembling.

Some ideas I never hear anyone talk about:
    - Do you think Malcom would have been able to hear the ghost on the tape if HE wasn't a ghost himself?
    - When Cole says maybe they can pretend to see each other again, and Malcom says I'll see you tomorrow, Cole's look in response says that he knows they we see each other "tomorrow" someday.
Second viewings of this also deserve a reaction video. MANY things have greater meaning once the twist is known.

Although it isn't discussed in the movie, I believe that the "ghost" voice Malcolm hears on Vincent's tape is an EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon). EVPs are voices which appear on electronic recording media on playback despite not being audible to the (normal) human ear when the recording was made. With Vincent's special abilities, he probably heard the voice, but even if Malcolm had been present in the room, he probably wouldn't have heard it. Presumably, he could have heard the EVP on playback at any time; but even if he played back the recording before he died, he probably didn't think to boost the volume so that he could hear the faint EVP, because, unlike Cole, Vincent never trusted Malcolm enough to reveal what he was experiencing. Instead of, "I see dead people," Vincent only says, "You won't believe."

See, this is the reason I love reading comments on this movie. I always realize something new. This comment is the second one I've come across today in this reaction video where I thought of something new. I never thought how truly powerful the girl's dad's performance was until someone else commented on it earlier, and I thought about it and realized he only has one line of dialogue.
The second was in your comment here about "seeing" Malcolm "tomorrow" meaning someday on the other side. It makes me feel a little less sad after all this time.
I was one of the lucky ones who saw this in the theater when it came out. People were walking out asking people waiting in line to see the movie, "Did you already see it? First time?" And when like a third of the people in line nodded, which was a big surprise to the rest of us, the people asking would go, "Don't say anything! Don't say anything!" And the rewatchers just nodded and said nothing!

This is one of the most brilliant reactions I’ve seen. When Mr. Knight would make some comments that pertained to the actual plot, I was so tickled to see Mrs. Knights subtle facial expression toward the camera. Just beautifully done. I’ve just found your channel and so far I’ve watched Jaws, Karate Kid, Karate Kid ll and now, The Sixth Sense. Y’all are just lovely and I look forward to watching more movies with you. Sending Hugs!!!

I saw this at the movie theater when it came out, the theater was packed, and there was a huge audible gasp from the whole audience when the ending twist was revealed. The crazy thing is, no one who saw it, gave the ending away to anyone.

It's very meta of you enjoying getting to see him react to this movie, while we are watching you both react to it. It's why we love reaction channels. We can't experience the joy we first had, but we get to see that in someone else.

Good job both of you, and good on Denise for holding in 😂.
This reminds of how stage magic is often based on how we assume things. We assumed Malcolm and the mom were talking - classic misdirection.
The film is so well done on evey level, it's a fun rewatch, even knowing the twist.

To see more of Haley Joel Osment’s phenomenal child acting you should watch “AI Artificial Intelligence” and “Secondhand Lions”. He also was in “Pay it Forward” and a small role in “Forrest Gump”.

Another great reaction to what has to be one of the most haunting movies out there. Incredibly acting dynamics between mother and son as well as with willis.

One detail I love in this movie is besides the cold, everytime there was something that needed your attention, the colour red was used... like the dress at the funeral, the door handle of the cupboard he couldnt open etc

The scene where malcom is listening to the tape machine gave me the most goosebumps, not just his reaction but the audio of the ghost, the fear, desperation and dispear in his voice is gut wrenching. And also the scene where the dad is watching the video of his daughter being poisoned, the horrified look of betrayal and sadness. This movie affects me a lot as when i was little i saw a ghost regularly in my house, of course no one believed me. Thankfully it was a friendly ghost but she would still scare me as she would appear suddenly without warning, never made a sound. She would just appear in various rooms just smiling at me and occasionally it looked like she was talking but i couldn't hear her speak. I saw her less and less over the years eventually stopped during my mid teens.

A lot of attention went into making the ghost manifestations consistent. The color red signifies the presence of the supernatural. When ghosts are angry or upset, the temperature drops. Ghosts cannot interact with physical objects unless they are really angry or determined (as with the ghosts hurting Cole, or Malcolm smashing the glass when seeing his wife and the other guy, or the poisoned girl ripping open Cole's tent).

So subtle on first watch and so clever on subsequent views.
i.e. Malcolm (like other ghosts) only wears the outfit he died in. He’s always got layers on so we don’t see the blood, but what a simple and important detail you don’t see on first watch.
Or when Cole sees him for the first time, he runs. Into a church. Steals a statue. He was scared of the ghost he saw.
    Soooo good. Rewatch for sure.
