    Once movie critique became a big part of UA-cam and online culture in general, Signs' reputation was diminished some by people that focused too much on the design of the aliens and their weakness being one of the most prevalent things found on Earth. Y'all nailed it on the head that this is a family drama dealing with loss, grief and faith where the supernatural element is there to drive that character growth.

    • @kay-jay1581
      @kay-jay1581 7 місяців тому +13

      I mean it was a really stupid critique. If those aliens never saw water before of course they wouldn’t assume it was dangerous. And they went over the strategies of the aliens a few times. They were there for exploration and test the Human Resources and see if they could combat humans

    • @jakegittes1864
      @jakegittes1864 6 місяців тому +5

      The water critique has always been so stupid to me. They’re there to explore and most likely didn’t come into contact with water on their home planet. If they’ve never been in contact with water then they don’t know it’s a weakness. Like a little kid who eats peanut butter for the first time and has an allergic reaction to it or something, you don’t know you’re allergic until you’re exposed to it.

    • @garretthorsch8143
      @garretthorsch8143 6 місяців тому +8

      Exactly! Not to mention those same goofballs who complained about the aliens and their weakness completely ignore the fact that us humans do LITERALLY THE EXACT SAME THING. We go into every hostile environment imaginable in search of a mix of resources or other. We can’t survive in space yet we go. We can’t survive naturally on mars yet we are trying to go, etc. thats what intelligent species do.

      I think they knew about the water and consistency. None of the crop signs were near water.
      I figured they didn't think we'd use water for defense versus our guns and knives to protect ourselves.
      I mean, look, reaction folks sometimes talk too much and jump to conclusions with criticisms of movies.
      Sure, their passionate viewers love the shock value of being blunt or savage. But many times, their questions would be answered by just keeping quiet.

    • @nickholcomb2220
      @nickholcomb2220 5 місяців тому +1

      I read somewhere that the aliens were pitched in the original script as demons and it was gonna be about like a massive demonic event which would explain the faith tie ins and almost holy water like weakness.

    As much as this film showcases their grief and coping with it, it is also about (maybe more) Gibson's character reclaiming his faith. His wife died ultimately to save her family by God's hand so she could pass her message.. Morgan was supposed to have asthma so the poison wouldn't affect him, Merrill was an epic hitter and said himself it felt wrong not to swing. The little girl's phobia with water produced a weapon available immediately. In the end Graham "saw" that none of it was coincidence and God had set everything up for them and he boldly encouraged Merrill to swing away. Ergo; Signs. I think it was a brilliant quasi-twist by Shyamalan.

  • @npiccolo96
    @npiccolo96 7 місяців тому +105

    Baseball fan here....A possible way that Merrill hit a ball 507ft is that if he played somewhere in Colorado for a game. Due to the high elevation and low air density in Colorado, a ball can travel 10% farther in higher elevation than normal elevation. Hope this somewhat helps!

I guess I feel weird about this particular movie as its just *so* good and subtle, like a hitchcock classic, and the reaction tone felt off this time for me but thats my issue, not everyone's (and its clear so many others in the comments section loved this reaction!). @alexandervelez9507. The aliens weren’t trying to take over & colonize. If you had listened to the radio reports towards the end of the movie the voice clearly says they were not here for the planet. They came to harvest humans so their plan was not to stay permanently. It was just a stop over to stock up. Just like hunters do not stay in the woods for the rest of their lives when they go hunting. They bag their deer/elk & go home. Same with industrial fishing. The fishermen don’t stay on the boats in the middle of the ocean for decades. They catch their limit & head back to shore.

    Signs is one of those films that I've rewatched many times and it still manages to surprise me with every rewatch. I get some people thinking it's too corny, too sentimental, or felt that there was a mismatch between the subject matter (alien invasion) and the themes (reclaiming lost faith), but I always found the film deeply human and beautiful. It remains a classic for me and I will continue to revisit for years to come. It's always interesting seeing people's reactions to it when you know it's their first viewing.

    Here’s my take: So the dad (Graham) had lost his faith bc God didn’t save his wife and thus tried to conform to a new belief system that everything is just random, and there’s no one that’s looking out for anyone. In the other hand Merrill still believes, and is uneasy when Graham loses his faith. Graham says there’s two kinds of people essentially; those who believe everything is random and no one is looking out for us and the others who “SEE” the signs and believe that they’re miracles and that NOTHING is a coincidence. And from the beginning we see that (1) Morgan is a very serious child, who is really protective of his sister + he was BORN with asthma. (2) Beau is a very intuitive child, who dreams vividly and actually gets “feelings” about events that are going to happen, especially when it involves someone she loves AND she has an OBSESSION about WATER, and so she ends up finding things wrong with each glass, consequently there are MANY glasses of water scattered all throughout the house. Morgan tells the librarian she’s HAD IT SINCE BIRTH. Merrill had a mad baseball record which won him a plaque with a BAT MOUNTED ON THE WALL in the living room, but never had a “career” bc he had so many strike-outs. SO he ends up moving in with his brother when the wife dies. (That’s what put him in the right place at the right time.) Ray, who feels deep guilt for what happened to Graham’s wife, even says “It’s like it was meant to be.” Which you both admitted was a strange thing to say. HOWEVER when the wife was talking to Graham before she passed, SHE commented that “IT WAS MEANT TO BE “. She said 4 things: “Tell Morgan (the serious one) it’s ok to play games” and “Tell Beau to listen to her big brother bc he’ll always protect her” and “Tell Graham (even tho she was talking to Graham) to “SEE”” and “Tell Merrill to SWING AWAY!” In the end Morgan’s asthma saved his life (his lungs were closed so no poison got in), Graham understands and finally SEES what his wife was trying to tell him that day, Merrill’s ability to swing hard took the alien down so that Beau’s obsession with the water then killed it. And all this to say that Graham realized that ALL those things happened for a reason….for THIS day that the aliens invaded!! 😊 Graham realizes that there really are no coincidences. He BELIEVES IN MIRACLES again; and that restores his faith that someone is really out there looking out for us. 😊 ❤ Yes, it was definitely more about the family and their healing than the aliens. 😊 Great reaction guys!!! Thank you so much!

    There was also an interesting theory about the aliens, that they were there to harvest as much as they could because they were desperate themselves, invading a planet with their one weakness, and that they're usually seen alone almost as if they're unorganized and one of the aliens captured on tv is clearly scared and hunched over and looks off to the direction it eventually walks over to, like it was hesitant.

    The movie is not about grief. It’s about faith. It’s clear as day in the couch scene. Even “see” and “swing away” was to be a double meaning of “see” and “sea” for water. Whether that was Gibson’s reason for doing it or Shyamalan’s idk, but it’s obvious. Also, for anyone who didn’t know, he’s an Episcopal priest in the movie, kind of strange since Mel Gibson is so prolifically Catholic.

    Its interesting you say its very Hitchcockian. 1) because M Night has said Hitchcock was one of his favorite directors, and 2) this film, aside from the ending, is very much like the original short story "the Birds" that the hitchcock film was based on. and I say the short story, because hitchcock's film, while great, didn't really fully capture that overwhelming sense of dread that permeated the entire story. this film, on the other hand, matches it almost exactly, and actually follows that story almost beat for beat until the climax. even the trip into town.
    also, yeah, their weakness was revealed to actually be holy water, not just water in general. the implication was that, as a priest, he would have blessed his own well. and it was common practice for town priests to bless the wells of the people in the town also, hence Ray. (meaning, going to the lake might have been the worst thing he could do.)

    Background details:
    1. M Night Shyamalan is such a family man (if you can't tell from how children fit into his films) that he only films within the state of Pennsylvania, where he lives, so he can go home to his family at night. ("Sixth Sense"/Philadelphia, "Signs"/Bucks Co, "Unbreakable/Philadelphia, "The Village"/Chadds Ford, "The Happening"/Philadelphia & Phoenixville.)
    2. The first day of shooting was Sept 11, 2001 (aka 9/11), which had to confer a sense of global event to the project. The fact that Flight 93 came down in a Pennsylvania field had to put a finer point on that.
    3. The scene by Raay Ready's car just before he heads off to find a 'safe' body of water was filmed soon after Shyamalan's much beloved grandfather had passed away. Again, had to influence the mood of the scene.
    Amazing how the son mirrors his father, as children often do. We adults model the behaviors and attitudes that children pick up and carry into their own adulthood.
    Morgan blames his father for the death of his mother and tells him that he hates him. Later, as Morgan's father tries to get him through the asthma attack as they hide in the cellar, you hear the same thing, with the father blaming God for his loss and telling Him that he hates Him.
    I consider Shyamalan as this generation's Rod Serling.
    Serling and Shyamalan both use well-known genres as costuming in order to tell deeper stories.
    "Sixth Sense" was Shyamalan's breakout film, with major studio backing. But the studio didn't understand the film, so they marketed it as a 'ghost /horror' story; it isn't. And that's how Shyamalan got this ridiculous one-trick pony 'twist' reputation.
    "Signs" looks like an alien invasion film, but it isn't; and you've figured that out.
    "Unbreakable" looks like a superhero film, but it isn't.
    "The Village" looks like a gothic costume story, but it isn't.
    And so on.
    The presenting genre is the wrapping, the costuming; it's superficial. There's a more interesting story below the surface.
