I will forever love Benson's performance she gave the best performance for my favorite character. For that she is always going to be my favorite. However Halle brought such a new life to the song. She had such an emotion that is truly special. She killed it and the two performances are just amazing and are my favorite renditions of the song.
@@purpleclaws202 oh please she’s such a phenomenal has nothing to do with her being black and if you think that’s a reason look at your racist tendencies
Halle, to me, her singing really emotes Ariel’s yearning for wanting to be on the surface. I believed that she would give up EVERYTHING for it. It’s more than beautiful singing, but giving feeling to the words. Halle for the win…
jodi benson is the best for me. She always said she wanted to belt it, but Howard Ashman told her not to. There's a clip of her singing it at his funeral which is just superb!
Morrisettes was the best for me. I think whats really great about the climax is the dynamic change and the fact it's not a full on belt, it gives a delicacy to it that is incredibly impactful. Only a couple got that right imo which does just go to show that it's not always the big showy vocals that are the hardest.
What a great video, my favourite will always be Jodi, I’m looking forward to seeing the full version of what Halle does, I kinda like Jessie J’s and laughed at your ‘too twiddly’ comment 😂 .. oh and the huge pair of glasses is from the grotto scene where Sebastian looks through them and blinks and his eyes go huge 😊
All respect to Jodi, I love the original, but she just never took it up past a certain point. It was like sort of monotone. It stayed at one level, BUT HALLE,...baby, Halle was making sure EVERYONE on that doggone land heard her! A true Siren!
she did sing pretty high originally, but they wanted her to be more tomboyish and take smaller breaths so the recording of her singing more monotone won
This is a classic example of belting not always being the best option for a song. So many commenters lack the fundamental understanding of the original. It’s not meant to be an extravagant performance; it’s an intimate monologue. The context behind the song is super important - I highly recommend people watch the recording process for the original movie and what Howard Ashman wanted. This isn’t a dig at any of the other performers, either. Different artistic mediums will have different requirements to sound “right” and also not be silly. You couldn’t expect the broadway version to be so quiet and subdued, and they (rightfully) took the song in a more modern direction with the live action version. From what I’ve heard so far, Halle’s version is beautiful. This isn’t a critique of her performance, so don’t @ me. She’s definitely my Ariel, too. I’m just really tired of people trying to downplay Jodi’s version. So much thought went behind it, and it’s the way that the original writer of the song (Howard) wanted it to be sung.
Halle is singing like I need to join you in your world. The depths from her soul wanting to be out of that water. Makes you feel it. And give you chills. Everyone’s rendition is special in its own way. Halles stood out more for me and was my favorite. This reminded me of the national anthem. Where everyone either sings it the same or put a different spin on it adding nothing but value and appreciation to the song.
To me Jodi Benson is Ariel, she did say that she wanted to belt the song so much and founded frustrating at times, because both the Director and Producer where in the recording studio with her and guided her on how to deliver the song and how they wanted it to sound, it's was also the first time time for her to record in a studio and she was nervous, they even dimmed the lights so she could get the feeling of being in the grotto and to make it more comfortable for her to embody Ariel, Halle is a beautiful talented woman she took the song and made it her own which is fair enough, and gives it a different feeling.
Yeah it matches the emotion and words of the song - true to the character. Always love Jodi version the best. But Halle I’m also looking forward to see…
@@francisturner2482 “she just sung”… No. It was way more than that. Watch the recording session of Jodi Benson singing the song and you’ll see the director/producer was very particular on how he wanted the song to be sung to fit the movie.
Jodi, always. The OG version is beautiful, and I honestly don't love the moving into higher notes just to impress. Jodi wanted to belt it and give more, but Howard Ashman's vision (TLM genius) was for it to be softer, for the character. And I like it that way.
To be fair, Halle’s version isn’t even on sale yet, and her performance isn’t live. But when I heard her in the trailer, I was MESMERISED. Sierras ability to belt is phenomenal though…. She kinda IS Ariel
Nick Pitera went viral on the early days of UA-cam for his cover of this song. His control and technique for singing so high in his vocal range really impressive. And if you close your eyes, and just listen, it’s sang so high you fully expect it to be a female singer. I’m still fascinated how he can manage to create different vocal qualities that make it sound like he is belting or switching register, when he already is that high in his vocal register. It’s a absolutely wonderful version of the song in and of itself. And that is sang by a male singer doin all that at the top of his register, just is the icing on the cake.
It's always going to be hard to beat Jodi Benson for me, but I am going to need to see this upcoming version on the biggest screen I can find. Halle sounds amazing!
Jodi Benson wanted to belt the hell out of the song, both producer and director guided her in the studio recording and were very specific on how she would deliver the song also, she found it frustrating, and I agree with you, each have their own way and voice and deliver it how they wish to express the song, different techniques and vocal ability play a major element on how each will sing it also.
Actually I love this song and have been lifting the end note all my time knowing the LM. I would think it would makw sense to keep it going up, reaching up to the shore. Showing how much you want to be a part of that world. That's how my mind took it.
Isn't it the directors and people behind the scenes that are in charge of how the music is sung? I'm sure the actors can give their input but I'm pretty sure the actors and singers don't have the final say. Correct?
Lea salonga was absolutely gorgeous. I love whenever she sings this song though I have to say my fav version of her is probably this video ua-cam.com/video/ue9a9nQOGJo/v-deo.html This is basically my ideal way for the song to end, so close to the original yet has just a little bit more vibrato in the end to sate my ear.
Sierra Boggess!! Is that even a question?! Fun Fact: Sierra went to the same high school as my brother (she also graduated from there the year I was born)
I do prefer Halles version more, I like how her "up above" lyric at the end is her reaching vocally pushing her self wanting to be on that land making it more impactfull with how she uses her voice. How desperate she wants to be there with the 3 ranges of that notes each getting stringer an more powerful making you feel that more, knowing she wants it so bad but she can't xx
morissette is overrated tho be honest im a Filipino and yeah she can hit high notes but she nothing without her high notes unlike to other singers here like halle even tho they don't hit high notes but you can literally say shes good in terms of techniques
@@frenz_vergz I’m a Halle Bailey fan since but Not sure if this is a good fit for her tho. Her voice is quite nasal on some parts and not well open. Yes she did good on being her own but this supposed to be sung like the original. Not being overrun by too much runs if you know what I’m talking about. Dynamics/ diction is the key to sing this song perfectly and Morissette did a great Job in that department. And talk about her voice, it’s very emotional. Yes she hits with high notes, no doubt about that, but to incorporate high intensity emotions in the song is hard to achieve. She is a story teller and understands what she’s singing.

Too full-voiced and belty doesn't convey the longing and sadness of this song. There has to be some mix and head voice used to make it feel desperate and not declarative. She's naive and dreaming, not going off to battle.
The whole song in general, Jodie will always be my favorite. I like the more youthful intimacy she brings to the song. If we’re talking just that last note…I do like Halle’s lift.
