    Love how this is all done with hand tools with no fancy saw bench. Most of my ‘carpentry’ is pretty rough, so I find the OCD woodworker stuff a bit intimidating. Not sure how I’ll go freehand ripping on the angle, but might give this a go.
    Any way you could hinge the lid or would it be a bit ‘tippy’. Might be more amenable if it was a single slope (less weight?).
    Also, any tips on a good retail outlet for 20 mm wide dressed pine (Melb Vic)?
    You leaving raw or painting the outside? Jo

      I had another with a hinged lid. There’s a couple of videos of it’s on my channel (pretty early) the only reason I didn’t with this one is because of the double sided entry.
      I get my timber from Mitre10. I have a trade a account so it is pretty cheap.
      I will treat it with wood preservative but everything has been put on hold with this weather.

      Your hardware store off the shelf 42 mm wide bars seem to work fine! I’ve been reading people say brood bars must be 32 mm and honey bars must be 35! Do you never get cross-combing? I wonder if your relatively deep starter strips is what keeps them organised? I’m going to try make one of these out of scraps…

    Mate that is the best video that I have seen where a Top Bar Hive has been made really well and also you made it look so easy. You have inspired me to buy some timber and have a go at making my own Hive, thank you so much.

    How did you attach the foundation to the topbar?

    • @aussiebeekeeping
      @aussiebeekeeping  11 місяців тому +1

      I cut a groove in the timber with a circular saw them used a soldering iron to melt wax and attach the starter strip. There’s a video with more about it in the top Bar playlist.

    Have you considered incorporating a section on one side or the entry of the Top Bar, to hold 10 or so normal 19" full height frames for the brood with a queen screen seperating the suspended comb?
    My thoughts where this would geive you benefits from both designs, make it easyer to split the hive or transport. the brood etc.

    • @aussiebeekeeping
      @aussiebeekeeping  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I have. I just can’t justify the need.
      If I need to I can transfer the brood in a standard Langstroth.

    What are your thoughts opinions between the Langstroth and the Top Bar, and do you see yourself moving to Top Bar for fixed hives?

    • @aussiebeekeeping
      @aussiebeekeeping  Рік тому +1

      I prefer top bar hives. I think bees like them better and the top bar colonies always seem healthier.
      But, the top bar hive limit you in movement as once they are in place they are difficult to take anywhere else
      I hope to end up with two top bar hives only for this reason.

    The roof shape is for a cathedral beehive. You should have just built cathedral shape combs the gap under the roof is wasted...

    • @aussiebeekeeping
      @aussiebeekeeping  Рік тому +2

      The roof is high pitched to work as an air gap for insulation in the hot Australian summer.
