I walk you through the process of making a hive split from one of my strongest colonies and give an update on the rescue hives, which were struggling earlier ...

In this video, I make a surprising and difficult discovery - one of my beehives is on the brink of collapse, and it’s all because of a mistake I made when feeding them sugar syrup. As I open the hive, I find signs of stress and struggle that could have been avoided. I’ll walk you through what went wrong, how I discovered the issue, and what I’m doing to try to save this hive. So, names for the hives. You’ve named the group Phoenix, after a mythical bird. Maybe continue the theme by naming the hives Griffin and Garuda. These are names of mythical birds.

    How many frames of pollen would you leave in a hive? What do you do with frames of pollen you remove? I have long langstroth with 26 deep frames, 6 of which are pollen.

    If you notice, we have had a ton of overcast yet again this spring, in my opinion when it is overcast blossoms etc don;t produce nectar, they require several days of sunlight to do it, hence you need to keep an eye on the bees and feed extra until the overcast has gone permanently. This is why one side of the divide does well and the other poorly.

    • @aussiebeekeeping
      @aussiebeekeeping 28 днів тому

      I agree. I’ve fed every weekend since September 1

    • @sentimentalbloke7586

      @@aussiebeekeeping Early spring I had a ton of leptospermum (Coastal tea tree) and had not a single bee on them, because they were in bloom during the overcast. I have noted an enormous reduction in the amount of pollen coming in, like virtually none at all, and this directly reflects in population..

You are the first hive. I’ve looked at that wasn’t in the lower 48. Thank you for sharing your beekeeping experiences. Kathy

      Thanks for watching. In the area I am. Lower South West of Australia we have darker bees (carniolan) but in the warmer areas they use Italian bees more. They are a golden colour. I do have some but not the majority.

    So what happened to the attempted nuc that was between the other two phoenix hives? One week you were attempting a nuc in a full-size box, the next week there was a completely empty space there. I mean, it obviously died but what happened? And what a shame about the orange hive, too - was there anything of that hive that was savable at all, or is everything there a complete write-off? Not by any means a beekeeper, but strangely invested in the success of your bees, from the other side of the world in the UK! 😄

    Bruh why would you squish that emergency cell, she could have been there a couple days ago and something happened. Swarm cells are bottom of frames. The bees know best and they are replacing her for a reason, reasons you cannot see or smell

    • @aussiebeekeeping
