Thank you appreciate your care and showing step by Step instructions on your Top Bar Bee hive!
Your videos are great because they are clear, orderly, and precise. I like that you may be a little OCD. There’s nothing wrong with doing something right. Thanks for sharing.
Finished my first one, thanks for the easy to follow instructions. Always could fall back on the video too. :) The plan was awesome, maybe though you could include a hardware list of what is needed, size, etc. That would let a person like me, without a lot of construction experience really feel secure! Thanks again!
Really like these videos about the bees. Wife deathly allergic so I live vicariously through theses videos. I' we always wanted to have a hive.
that's great, the bees are a lot of fun but they do take a bit of time to take care of.
Hello Jon Peters,
I am a hobby bee keeper from France and I use the hives my Dad had built back in the fifties. They often need reparing and fixing and I spend quite some time in my workshop sawing, cutting painting.
I really enjoyed watching your videos..
I
Great video, very instructive. No need to apologize for the length. The detail was well worth the time spent watching.
One of the best videos I've ever seen on youtube and my hive is underway. The plans backup the video perfectly. Thanks for the effort.
The comment does not carry any semantic load, it serves to support the channel and gratitude to the Author.
Great video very clear and instructive. This Guy is a brilliant craftsman and it is a pleasure to watch him.
Most informative. I have been bee keeping for quite a few years with standard hives most of which I built myself. Now I have become interested in top bar bee keeping. Your video is very professionally done, concise and logically laid out, Great Job! Thank You
Been looking for this part,Finally i got it.woooh.You are just too perfect.Thank you for this.
Hi Jon, I really appreciate how you comment on the size of materials. It's quite helpful. I've seen plans that were a lot more vague. The wood dimensions were right on but screws and nails were left up to us to figure out. Thank you.
LOL a great build from top to bottom Jon. I can't imagine how much work there was filming, editing and so on. All that effort paid off though and thanks for sharing.
Derek
Thank you ,this was a lot of work and I really appreciate the comment... be good Derek
Very well done! Not a top bar guy at all, but you're presentation was fantastic.
Love the hinges and the hooks for closing down the hive for winter.
Super video John.
I've set out a bee feeder near my shop to see if there are any wild colonies close by; I haven't seen any honey bees visiting the feeder. I wish I would have built a hive during the winter; I might have been able to convince any swarming bees to stay around.
Thank you for the video john.
thanks Scott
***** sorry about my misspelling of your name Jon.
no big : )
Getting my bees tomorrow. Used many of your top bar methods. THANKS!!!
Thanks, I've got tons of notes as a don't have internet at my shop. 8 above 0 here on the 45th parallel so I'm going to dig into this as soon as the old wood stove makes the shop warm.
Good build instruction. Hope the next winter isn't as bad and the hives do well!
Thanks
Very well done, Jon! Thanks so much for the thorough easy to follow directions and the free plans.
Thanks Steve
Great job! My sons dresser is coming along nicely, I cant wait to see the one you do someday. I had to give you a special thanks. I have learned a lot of techniques and tricks watching your videos and its helping me with the dresser! Thanks for the inspiration and knowledge!
Thanks Anthony, appreciate it man
BEES ARE AWESOME. THANKS FOR THE INSTRUCTIVE VIDEO. GREAT JOB.
Great Job! Am NOT a woodworker but you made this seem do-able! Thanks!
Nice build. A lot of work but so worth the effort. Funny blooper take at the end lol.
Thanks Adam
awesome work John! super informative, great woodworking tips, and very sleek & functional design! thanks for sharing, I always enjoy and get inspired by your vids! ....and I think you're right, there's definitely a little OCD in most all of us woodworkers... but its that attention to detail that makes it something great... &/or take twice as long as needed to finish. :)
ha : ) yeah Stew you know it man
Also just as good as Part1! Thanks again.
Great videos, I built all parts for 2 langstroth this winter, and receiving my bees next week, but I think I will build your top bar this winter. Looks fun and less
tedious than building 100 frames
thanks Charles, have fun with the bee keeping
As I said previously, not OCD - just neat!
My wife won't let me keep bees, but a neighbour has just started doing so, so perhaps she'd like one of these hives.
Thank you Don
The video wasn't too long.
Thank you so much for the detail...
Hi Jon, I'm a NewBee who was bitten just a week ago. I'm still deciding on which style of hive I want to pursue and your videos make the TopBar Hive very appealing.
Thanks a Million for your very professional and instructive lessons on hive building. I'm sure that many other NewBees will profit for your Great work. ;o)
Don Bomer Thanks Don, I've just started thinking about a Warre hive you might want to take a look at one.
***** Thanks for the quick reply Jon. I also researched the Warré hive and will eventually build or buy one or more. It looks like it may be the best of both worlds, Top Bar and Langstroth. FYI I found Warré plans at theselfsufficientliving.com/10-free-langstroth-and-warre-or-top-bar-beehive-plans/
BTW, your plans, especially part 1, are very difficult to read due to JPEG compression. I highly recommend you save drawings a GIF file to prevent this problem.
I'm in the process of re-drawing the plans in Visio and will be happy to share them with you and your followers when finished. A free Visio reader is available on-line from Microsoft.
That would be great Don, Thank you
Jon, quick question. I was wondering what you would think about putting a 3" dryer vent in the roof of the hive? Would that help with ventalation?
Could you make a video on making a good cross cut sled for a table saw? Ive been trying a few and cant find one I really like but I like the one I see in your videos. Really enjoy the videos you got me going on my woodworking hobby.
amazing video and thanks for the plans.
Wow. Your free hand straight lines are more accurate than if I were to draw them with a straight edge..infatuating!
@09:52 Damn, you make that straight line without ruler like a God. i subscribed, you are very skilled carpenter
Great Part Two!
Noticed we have (it appears) the same 14" BS. I was disappointed with mine. I had a SEARS tilting arbor BS and sold it to get the $$ to buy the Delta. Almost instantly the tilt arbor broke and I discovered it (and the only replacement available) were made of pot metal.
I was also surprised to find it didn't appear to have much power.
I wondered if you had found any issues with yours and (esp) if you 'fixed' any!
BTW: When attaching the roof (in Part One) you added a strip of wood to the exterior end panel. Then (in Part Two) you layered another 1/4" thick piece on top of the first piece. Then when attaching the hinge, added a shim to the 'lid' (roof) leaf of the hinge to effectively move the roof 'over' 1/8"
I cant' recall the dimension given for the first piece - but will call it 3/4" for sake of simplifying this suggestion.
Since you added 1/4" to the 3/4" strip, then 1/8" to the hinge leaf, the first strip added should be equal to 6/8 + 2/8 - 1/8 or 7/8".
enjoyed the instruction, will attempt this for this spring.
Brilliant video I will be making one for a Bee keeping friend
Very neat job. But I'm a woman and have no carpentry experience and made my top bar hives very simple, using the golden rule. They are working beautiful so far for the bees. I used cedar.
Very professional! Very impressive. Thanks.
Nice work like always thanks for the videos
thanks
Thank you I am just starting looking mainly for pollinators but some honey would be great 👍 kitrobbo
Did you consider putting the hinges on the long side? The hinges could go on the side where the bees enter making hive inspection more convenient and less intrusive on the bees.
Very educative. Thanks.
awesome video's , reallly awesome!, now a bat house , a good one! bats need help also !
Hi Jon
Great video Thanks
How are the bees doing? Thanks for the video.
bigred74699 so far so good , Thanks
Hi Jon Nice piece of work there. Just wanted to ask you don't you need a queen excluder to prevent the queen from flying away. Much obliged
That tip on scoring the aluminum to break it was as good as gold!
great, Thanks for the comment
Roofing Screws --> There are such things. They come with a rubber 'washer' that seals the hole. They are Galvanized and self-tapping through 18-20 gauge metal roofing material. I really like your build - not a critic, just sharing another way.
I love this video and have watched it several times. My father in law is going to make this hive for me, but I was wondering if it could be changed to allow for the entrance on the short end of the hive instead of the long end? Do you see any problems that would create?
I like your honey bees box
Hi Jon-Just watched your video/part 1 & 2. I raised bees as a teenager(my dad had a couple of hives and my brother and I took over for a few years). We always had to put a smaller entranceway to the honey boxes to keep the queen and drones out, and isolate the brood boxes. How does that separation work here, and is it not even necessary? Thanks for a reply. Bill B.
Very neat job. But I'm a woman and have no carpentry experience and made my top bar hives very simple, using the golden rule. They are working beautiful so far for the bees.
Nice video Jon. Do you paint inside and outside? What kind of paint? Thanks....Tim
Thanks Tim , no just the outside... latex acrylic
Ok John, like you video but one question is, How do you harvest your honey. Crush or what ?
What would you suggest for a good Minnesota weather hive? I haven’t yet worked a hive but I’m taking classes to learn more about bees and their hives.
Thanks for the video, very good instruction! I'll be making a top bar hive soon.
I have a question for you. I have a circular saw instead of a table saw. Can you suggest a good way to cut the long 1.25" strips for the top bars? Thanks, it would be appreciated.
Thanks Brent, they may cut them for you at the lumber yard if not I think you could use a straight edge
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!! thank you
Hi Jon! Have you seen this amazing new hive out of Australia called the flow hive? they have their own you tube channel.
George Kastanos Did you decided to purchase a Flow Hive? I curious how the bees work with plastic honeycombs?
Interesting and informative video
Thanks
Thanks
Thanks for education and sher idea
Hi Jon, thanks for these plans - I have 1 problem - I built your previous version using your inside side dimension of 13" x 12" & your new version is 12 3/4" x 12" - how come you didn't have any trouble moving your bars from hive to hive as this changes the width of the body of the hive?
Most people will be able to find 1x6 &1x8 at the home store and 1 x6 + 1 x8 = 123/4" mine is 13 x 12 but the plans are for 12 3/4 x 12
always love your videos jon ... ...long or short .......... i have one question .... is there any particular reason you build the hive wider at the top than the bottom ... tans
nat
The bees naturally build their comb in this shape. It is called a catenary curve. The comb is also stronger this way.
Well done.
15:14 Jon Peters: "I know this video going on a bit..."
Me: Just go on.
great work! thanks
Looking for the free plans you mention but can't seem to locate them. are they still available?
It's amazing
subbed and likes.. thanx for sharing. i will try to build this also.
Хорошая работа, удачи!
Thanks for the video.
I started building one yesterday, just a demo. One side of the CDR is smooth finish and other side is rough.Would I want the rough side in or the smooth side and also the bars I started building too?
mark s Sounds Mark , either way will work
Thanks Jon.I work for a lumber mill and thought I'd give it a shot. The Cedar we cut are at 11 1/4 inch so I hope losing 3/4 of an inch doesn't hurt much...Thanx again
I don't think the bees will mind :) enjoy the project
Question:
Im trying to gauge what to charge for a project like this. How many hours did this take to complete?
At the end of the Video you have green tape and painted the bottom of the legs black. Is there a purpose for that?
What's up with the boxes around the bee hives?
I plan to fill them with gravel
***** Oh ok. Hopefully you put up an electric fence so bears don't get to your hives.
beautiful ...wish I could make the same
I liked your video
insterenting idea thanks to much
Are your plans still available on your site? I looked but did not see them.
Hi Jon. I was wondering what model is your miter saw? I'm looking to buy one but not sure if I should get a 10" or 12".
I like the 10" saws, very few times that you will need the 12.... I think
great video
Thanks Zack
*****
I love all of your videos. You do a wonderful job of explaining without droning on.
I'm wondering about the roofing material? Doesn't it make the hive hot having a metal roof? Why not shingle it?
no not really and the shingles would be heavy
What a great series! Thank you, I have always been keen to try a top bar hive. Do you have a preference between a top bar or langstrothe? Thanks again for the great videos on this.
HI JON,GREETINGS FROM SOUTH AFRICA, I APPRECIATE YOUR INFO&VIDEO,PLANNING ON BUILDING TOP BAR HIVES BUT (IF POSSIBLE) COULD YOU GIVE MEASUREMENTS IN METRIC PLEASE?
HAVE A GREAT TIME!
people who want to learn i made on of his video !! i love them to good work ! steel can not get on your website??
Any reason why you use a steel workers chalking on wood and not use it on steel ?
How come you didn't bond the aluminum to the plywood with roofing cement like last time?
just didn't think it needed it
Why did you paint that beautiful popler ????
What’s the purpose of the mesh in the bottom if you put a wooden bottom on it?
Surprised u don’t use torx screws as they drill themselves
awesome video's, THANKS!!!
would copper work for a roof and not harm the bees?
PERFECT🤗
Do you use a queen excluder with a top bar beehive?
no but I'm thinking about that
nice!
Thanks
Plans still available? Couldn't find them
I felt like I was watching norm do a build for this old house
In your opinion Jon, who do you think is the majority of people watches most of your videos? i.e. what kind of people do you think watch your videos
people who like to make things
***** interesting...I'm a 20 year old in university studying environmental geology and I've never made much ever but I love watching every one of your videos lololol
cool man, thanks for the feedback
Charles Potter from Maryville TN. I'm an animal shelter volunteer, Harmonica player and a hobbiest bee keeper. I find this video very helpfull.
Thanks Charles
Jon I am having trouble finding the Top Bar Hive Plans?
jonpeters.com/how-to-build-a-top-bee-hive-part-1/
Hello would this tbh take national frames
Do you have the plans available?
Why is the woodwork so thick & heavy?
