Thanks! My 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee finally needed a new battery. I watched a few videos before this one but they were confusing a bit and then yours was crystal clear. One thing that was overlooked: don't forget to plug the unused hole on the positive side with the little plastic plug that comes with the new battery.

Thank you for posting! I saved $200 + and since my wife is the primary driver of our Jeep, and we live far from town, I’m a lot more confident she will be safe. By the way, I found a dime, not a quarter under my seat.

One small addition, the battery has two vent holes and only one is used in the Jeep. The small plastic bag attached to the back end of the battery has a small plug that should be used to close the forward hole on the battery. Might keep a little acid vapor out of the passenger compartment. Bag is visible at 9:35

Dude...you rock...mine lasted 7 years!! Factory special order Summit diesel and I had no idea the battery was under P-seat! I see lot's of comments about how to jump if dead...jumper connections are UNDER-HOOD, immediately adjacent to the right-front hood hinge under red-n-black plastic factory covers...EASY DEAL!!

Remember you only have 17minutes to install the new battery before all your radio stations and car electrical settings are completely erased. So keep that in mind

@billt460 Took me about 10 minutes, from cables disconnected to reconnected. Removed bracket before disconnecting. Also slid seat back for easier access to front of battery (not a power seat).

I used a battery jumper on the posts under the hood to retain power to accessories.

Had my jeep for 5 years and never knew battery was under seat until i had to change it. Your video was very helpful.
I found it easier to deal with the positive terminal by putting seat all way back and get to it from the front.
Not as easy changing battery like it used to be. Thanks for the help

    • @redratt427
      @redratt427 4 роки тому +3

Actually, yes, it is...there are battery jumper connections adjacent to the right-front hood hinge (marked with red and black plastic covers) so you can jump it in a traditional manner. :)

A couple of minor revisions to the procedure that may help and take it for what it’s worth.
For the front clips. Run the seat about 3/4 way AFT while still bing full UP. Release the front clips with the screwdriver as before but easier access. After that run seat full forward and continue with video steps.
Bracket: since I was reading about the 17 minute time limit before internal memory erase I removed the bracket first. Then removed the terminals. Same result and added another couple of minutes to the “Play Clock”. For installation you can loosely install the bracket, connect the terminals THEN final torque of the bracket.
What I also noticed was for a 2014 even though the terminal connections looked like the first day at the factory the bracket hold down nits looked trashed and corroded. Threaded fine but possibly different metals. I would have expected better condition of the bracket nits especially being inside the vehicle not exposed to the elements.
    Other than that spot on!!

I just replaced the original battery on my 2012 V6, a few comments:
--Remove the battery bracket before removing the negative and positive terminals. Once the bracket was removed, I was able to pull the battery towards me and that made access to the positive terminal much easier.
--The OEM battery only had one vent hole, but the aftermarket had two vent holes; don't forget to plug the vent-hole that is not being used.
--10mm for the terminals and a deep socket 13mm with a 12-inch extension for the bracket.
--I didn't use a memory saver and the radio stations were saved.
--The O-Reilly's Super Start H7 AGM fit perfectly.

Nice video, it saved me lots of time. Getting the battery out was easy but I had a couple complications putting the new one in. 1) may want wear gloves when lowering the battery into the compartment. I skinned my finger pretty good on the edge of something. 2) be sure to plug the breather hole on the far side. The new plug was on the plastic cover of the positive terminal on my new battery. 3) don't install the bracket until the positive terminal is connected. I didn't have enough space to wedge it on and needed to move the battery forward a little. 4) Have a magnet handy if your 13 mm drive can't hold the nuts. 5) the negative terminal connection isn't tight and it can slip off. According to other You-tubers I need a terminal shim.

This is all good.ideas and suggestions. I connected jumper cables from another car...not from battery to battery but from battery terminal connections under the hood. This keep power to all settings in the Jeep while I changed out old battery...but to be safe I used a disposable glove over each terminal as I disconnected them as they will have power to them from the other car, and the tip to connect the positive terminal before sliding forward is a must. All in all about 45 minutes and no way not to bang up your knuckles getting out....putting new one in was easy peasy. Battery was $229 from Auto Zone. No extra vent plug came with my battery so took out the one from the old battery. By the way got 110,000 miles out of original battery.

Great refresher - For anyone putting an Odyssey performance battery in their Jeep Grand Cherokee 2011-2017 with a 3.6L, their computer checker is wrong. It wants you to buy the 49-950, however, that is too long for the bracket. Apparently the 49-950 was designed for the 3.6L diesel only. For a 3.6L, you need the 94R-850 like the 5.7L and 6.4L.

I think putting the bracket last would be helpful as you can slide the battery backward accessing the terminals more easily,.

I'm going to do my battery soon.. I have 130K on my 2013 and the factory battery is still running very strong. I just don't feel like getting stranded so I'm going to swap it out ahead. I'm impressed with the longevity of the factory battery though> i'll keep it as a spare.

    • @OvertakeVideo
      @OvertakeVideo  7 років тому +1

Wow 130k! That IS good. My battery was still working when i changed it at 95k miles, but you could tell when starting the car that it just didn't have the cranking power it used to. It was gradually getting worse and my fear was it would get to the point where the car would not start--so I wanted to change it before that happened.

Just bought a 2014 Grand Cherokee for the wife. I had no concept how much automotive technology had changed since buying our last car...10 years ago! In any case, I appreciated your video; the information you presented was a good step-by-step tutorial for battery replacement.
The only question I still have is, "Does something need to be done to preserve the car's computerized memory and settings while the battery is disconnected." At the end of the video, I did notice some wires that seemed to be trailing from your 12 volt auxiliary dash plug. Were these connected, via the auxiliary plug, to some sort of outboard 12 volt DC power supply or battery, for the purpose of maintaining the car's memory settings...or is this not a concern on a Jeep Grand Cherokee? Thanks for your help.

Calvin Blumhorst First, thank you for your kind words! You do not need to do anything. I don't believe any of my settings were erased except maybe my saved radio station presets. I did not have any auxiliary power source hooked up during replacement of the battery. I hope this helps!

    • @tiredoldman9414

update. just had to REALLY pull the thing up. it was more or less glued down, but finally got it. a note that i got the H8 version of the battery (both H7 and larger H8 were supposed to fit), but looks like with H8 you need a different size bracket - this is also mentioned in comments. so i returned and got the H7 size which matched original. i had to take out a plug from the original battery to block the vent hole on the + side of battery. used breather tube on the - side, same as original battery. thank you for VERY clear video. was going to keep power going to save memory, but looks like if you change battery fast enough you dont need to worry about it. i was without battery for only about 10 minutes, and everything saved. was quoted $600 to change battery, but did it for $249 and a $6 socket extenders - needed about 10 inches. THANK YOU.

MY previous battery WAS mopar and it didn't have the vent tube connected at all, but when I replaced my old battery and put the new one, the cover where the battery goes, It gives directions on how to install and reinstall, it says that the vent tube has to go on the positive. Not on the negative so I'm a little confused. I don't have the tube connected right now because it doesn't reach to the positive side like the cover says, so I left it unplugged. Can someone explain please?

Usually there is a code card attached to your original key with the radio code. I did not have this issue though when doing mine....! Was your original battery completely dead or disconnected for an extended period of time? I would also think you could reach out to FCA and provide proof of ownership and they could provide you with the code. Good luck!

Super video. Professionally narrated and executed, start to finish with military efficiency. Positive inputs/tips from the comments below. The only thing I would have done differently is take those headphones or hearing pro that were in the back seat net and fling them across the driveway (after bumping my heard into them a few times). I know you didn't do that because your kids were out there playing. I also note that you made money on the video with the discovery of loose change on the floor.

Very useful video, thanks. 2012 UK model Overland, battery died and I couldn't find it under the bonnet (hood)! D'oh, under the seat!
New lifetime warranty battery bought, fairly good price at £150 (($210) for a heavy duty like this, and watching your vid helped as I realised I needed a ratchet extension first... whole swap out took 20 mins and was really straightforward. My only difference was an additional tow bar electrics in line fuse running off the positive terminal. Really useful vid, thanks.

Good hint. ALWAYS. Start engine, and ensure proper vehicle operation prior to installing the final access cover and the seat. Long way to go, I guess in this case it worked out if the seat didn’t work then that would be a good clue that something was either loose or not connected at all. I would start and make sure no stray sparks before installing the access cover.

Board computer memory system in new Jeep use batteries savor system or jumper cables to a turned off additional vehicle battery before and while charging battery 👍🏻

Great video! Clear and Concise. Question: Not sure if my problem is a battery going bad. or not... Had several Service/Alert lights all turn on at the same time in my dashboard. ALL at the same time along with the Cruise Control going out. 2017 Jeep GC still runs fine, but the ABS, Electronic Stability, and Service 4WD lights all turning on at the same time made me suspicious of the battery. I put a Code Reader on it and NO CODES came up??? Thoughts?

From a battery longevity standpoint it is a smart idea to put it inside . This keeps the battery from the extreme heat and cold of the engine compartment environment . From a maintenance do it yourself perspective it is a PIA specially now on the V6 models which have "2" batteries in that small space now thanks to the useless stop/start feature on the V6's ....
