You can really see the difference between those who tune on a dyno and those who just throw as much fuel as they can at it. There are a few there who have the fuel down, I’ve worked with diesels for a while now and it’s nice to see them tuning for power without excess smoke.
I'm a huge diesel fan. I've got an older VW Jetta TDI that's tuned. I get 52mpg and drive hard. The tune nearly doubles the torque and adds a good amount of HP. It's quick and fun to drive. It's not a race car, it's my daily driver, but it's quick getting up to speed and fun. Have a stock f-250, can't wait to save up for a tune and delete! Too much smoke is just wasted fuel. If my tune in my Jetta wasn't good, I'd smoke a bit, too, and wouldn't get such good mpg. 👌
It's a factor of a big power diesel with mechanical injection, they all do it. It's the nitrous that makes them clear up under wide open which is why they all puff on the shift
Every diesel event is "test and tune" day because these things do nothing but break. Last year there was 6 hours of track cleanup. These are the mouth breathers of the racing world. And 1/8th mile too? BORING.
A couple of things I've noticed. No one is warming up their tires. No one is lining them up in the groove for best traction. Building boost for the launch takes them forever. A ton of guys are having fuel starvation issues around 60 to 100ft and shutting down. Zero chassis tuning for drag racing. Watch them bounce around, pivot, and walk to the left. Half the drivers don't know what staging is. Honestly reminds me of sportsman class drag racing in the 90s when everybody was just starting with turbos.
@Trevor Halperin very true. 4wd burnouts are doable, but the skill required directly translates to the drag racing ability. It's one of the things they learn once they get a few hundred passes in. From the amount of driver front tire toe in on all of them more suspension work would help there as well.
@@davemcdaniel4856 Alot of those trucks were there for not just drag racing, but the truck pulls. Alot of them are set up that way BECAUSE they're there for the pulling competition. I don’t know about you but how often do you see all wheel or 4 wheel drive vehicles doing a burn out or warming up the tires? Not often for anyone to do that. Sometimes maybe. Plus given the weight of these trucks pushing down on the slicks and being 4 wheel they don’t exactly need to warm the tires. That same reason why it doesn’t matter much if they’re in the groove or not. These trucks will damn near hook up on ice. And anyone that knows anything about diesel drags knows they don’t just spool up at the snap of a finger like turbo gas engines. It is caused by the torque being transfered through the drive shafts it can be stoped but to do that you would need to stiffen the suspention to do that and that could cause way worse problems. Yes you are paritly corect on not wanting to raise the truck on launch ,it is better for a drag veichle to be lower to the ground to reduce air flow under the veichle that can cuse uplift but these trucks are heavy enough you dont need to worrk about that.
