    I think one of the biggest reasons why there's such a divide among audience's response to Paul is because his archetype isn't nearly as familiar with in pop culture. Paul is not a hero, or villain or even anti-hero. Paul is a tragic hero, and that's a very different thing than most of the discourse surrounding the character and ultimately what Herbert is trying to communicate within his work. The whole "Paul is good guy vs. Paul is bad guy it just depends on your perspective" perspective misses the point.
    Paul is very deliberately written as the Mary Sue of Mary Sues; he's raised from birth as a mentat, an order that represents all of the sacred aspects of the masculine. He's surrounded by alpha males who love and guide him. He's trained in the Bene Gesserit way by his mother, representing all the cunning power of the feminine. Paul's mother loves him and his father so much that she disobeys a sacred order of her own sisterhood. Paul is raised as a ducal heir and learned in the ways or war and politics. He then goes on to live among the most robust, resourceful and pragmatic people in all the imperium and eventually becomes their legitimate ruler after succeeding in all of their rituals and besting all comers. At this point the missionaria protectiva is moot, Paul has fulfilled all of the prophecies that no other person in the imperium ever could, he literally is That Guy and proves it. And that's all before becoming the goddamn Kwisatz Hadderach, the supreme being who can see in all places at once. The most capable human to ever live. And yet, even this supreme being is unfit to wield such monopolized power because no one is. The jihad is inevitable, violence sings its own song.
    This understanding of power is demonstrated in all the surrounding characters and subplots. The Bene Gesserit have the hubris to think they can control humanity and even the Kwisatz if they just patiently plan in the shadows long enough, the Fremen think they are ready to fulfill their dream of the "green paradise" which they do, but at great destructive cost to themselves, and so on.
    Herbert once stated that his favorite president was Richard Nixon as Nixon taught the American people to distrust presidents.

      @wackyvorlon 5 місяців тому +15

      There is a hitch in what you’ve written though, there’s nothing particularly gendered about the mentats. Your comment about mentats representing “all the sacred aspects of the masculine” is in no way supported by the text.
      Additionally, if you read the books it’s not entirely clear that Paul is the Kwisatz Haderach at all. A far better case can be made for Leto II.

      @@HighLordBlazeReborn I'm assuming maybe he just read some stuff from "Hunters.." with Teg and Duncan both macho mentats, well Teg obviously as his past is remembered lol. • @cambodianz
      @cambodianz 5 місяців тому +18

      @@wackyvorlon the mentats are men. Exclusively. Their expertise is in extreme logic and calculation, overtly masculine traits which is why Jessica’s confrontation with Thufir in the first act carries as much weight as it does. Mentats and Bene Gesserit have similar clashes of point of view in the later books.
      Paul absolutely becomes the Kwisatz, he just doesn’t commit to the golden path which Leto II later will.

Oh my god will those scenes be great to see on screen in a cinema, but the rest? The story arcs such as Idaho and Scytale and whatever his name was, the fish guy, that stuff was boring imo. Nice reaction - you can see Lynch's Dune at this point without worrying about spoilers - it's a more directly Surreal take on the material, and more directly religious, in some ways like a 50s Biblical epic, crossed w a BBC period drama - there's also a TV miniseries from 2000 that's strong, with William Hurt - the first miniseries covers the first book, like these films, so you could watch that - there's also a sequel miniseries, Children of Dune, that covers the next 2 books, but you might want to wait if you don't want the next film spoiled - Villeneuve is planning to make the second book, Dune Messiah, into a 3rd film - no clear schedule yet; he's finalizing the screenplay - but he says it helps if there's a time lapse before part 3

    Paul is absolutely a villain, if not necessarily THE villain. Herbert said he wrote the Dune saga as a cautionary tale about the dangers of charismatic leaders ("they should come with a warning label," he said). Paul is deliberately constructed as a traditional sci-fi hero archetype, even a bit of a white savior, but it's all set up for the deconstruction that follows. Herbert wanted readers to be invested in Paul's journey but then end up questioning their devotion to Paul. And just to be sure they get the message, Dune Messiah makes it VERY clear that Paul is, shall we say to avoid spoilers, Not A Good Guy.
    I'm really glad that Denis Villaneuve leaned into this, rather than turning Dune into just another Chosen One hero story. I think it's really going to spark some interesting cultural discourse around the whole idea of Chosen One stories.

    They over did it, they thought they were being authentic and creative with the subtitles, it's going to kill the film. Not that many watch subtitled films, this is not as good as they think. They've just tried to hide it behind ostentatiousness.
    Personally, I think the mini series did a better job, and the 1984 David Lynch one was better - despite a couple of disjointed bad scenes.

      From what I understand to date, the first one pulled in $400m and there are no official viewing figures yet for the sequel.

      Just cuz you’re dumb and can’t read doesn’t mean everyone is. Lynch’s dune was trash. No viewing figures? Gross box office numbers are reported almost immediately and the film has been out for 2 months. Dune part 2 made $670 million world wide
