Rent has so much meaning for me. Not only is it an absolutely beautiful story and full of such amazing music, but it was the first step for me into acceptance of the LGBT community. It was the first step to questioning all the hateful bullshit I had been told by so many adults and the friends I had at the time.
I get u , I had a brother who was gay and I lived in the LES and grew up to be an addict and had all the same prejudices of the times and my brother died of AIDS in ‘89 , it wasn’t till I got clean , had a gay sponsor , saw the movie that my heart was opened and I actually cried for my brothers death , self imposed prejudice and lack of compassion caused me to not have a true friendship with my brother. I have been able to make amends to my brother by accepting people as they are , the Show and movie changed my life.
I love the movie version of this song so much it hurts (I do, however, wish that they had kept in the "are we a thing?""darling, we're everything" dialogue)

I remember the boys stopped calling each other "gay" as an insult as much. The once-considered "fruity" theatre kids were suddenly kind of cool and mysterious. From there it just grew into something generational with the general "survive as you are and fuck the haters," attitude of the show. People really sleep on how impactful this film was. This film and Chicago were essentially why I became a crazy theatre kid.

I just saw it in a local theater in Chatham New York and they did as good as Broadway and that's pretty much how I've seen it everywhere around here the Hudson Valley. I got to see it on my 40th birthday 15 years ago on broadway, and I have never been disappointed in a production yet in this New York area❤

I was so obsessed with this musical when I was a teenager. Everything about it, the movie, the OBCR, going to an Anthony Rapp book signing. Quietly singing Tango Maureen on the landline phone with my friend, then getting grounded because my mom picked up the phone on the other side of the house and heard me sing the word "hell". Rent was like my life for a few years. Grew up in a super religious household, helped me finally accept who I am. Now I'm 31. It's been almost 15 years since I saw anything Rent-related. Just going back and watching the movie and listening to the OBCR is such an amazing feeling. I don't think any musical will hold such a special place in my heart.

He was the best boyfriend and a victim of trauma and circumstance and coping in unhealthy ways. Toward the end he was doing so good weening off alcohol and we thought he’d make it to a liver transplant but he never. I told mutual friends before he was even gone that the lyrics of this song felt like me and him. We were in the process of moving his stuff from his place into my apartment when he passed. This song is even more bittersweet knowing Angel died in the show/movie and now my love has too. I don’t have guts to listen to the reprise now.

Rent (the movie) is the second most inspirational thing I've ever seen, the first being the Broadway musical. This show defined a whole generation, and hopefully will do the same for many to come. Needless to say, even though we'd performed songs from RENT (Season's of Love) I had no idea how the plot of this musical would be a harbinger for my own battles. The scene that always haunted me was the white gay dude going through withdrawal in the bathtub in the middle of winter, essentially all alone in a big city. While I went through about five years of serious addiction after that, I made a huge turn in my life and stopped HIDING everything (including being gay!). My heart goes out to ANYONE who can relate with this movie in anyway. I've never even watched it a second time after seeing it with my friends in theaters as it serious fucked with me. That withdrawal scene STILL HAUNTS ME even now that I'm clean!
This is truly the person that I love in the song I am non-binary and unconventional to a lot of people but I have a wonderful woman who loves me for who I am she loves me for who I am I'm never loved anyone but her and I mean it. She is my everything because she actually accepts me for who I am that is true love! ❤️😊
