I remember being a teen seeing this and dreaming of moving to New York. And now I've lived here for five years and I'm fantasizing about moving out....just like this song. It's weird how you become a cliche without realizing it
it's such a gem of a moment when the subway first starts and Mark is the only one who wasn't already sitting down and he literally falls and crashes into a seat.
I first heard Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown in the CD version of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, so Mark is to me like an adult version of that character. xD
I really like how Roger is here, because in the musical version he wasn't. But even here, you can tell how defeated he is, only joining in a few forced times. This is his first time out of the house in a while, and they just came back from the life support meeting. In the musical, Roger leaves to go directly to Maureen's show after he rejects Mimi, and he doesn't go to the life support meeting. I like both versions but in the movie it was a nice touch!
The film fixes many things by either while simply adapting to the film possiblities or just because changing it makes more sense. Both versions are very good but film haves a better overall story. Roger being in this scene is one of the fixes, which fixes the fact that Roger just simply teleports in the musical.
I love how when Angel and Collins start their synchronized dancing Collins keeps looking behind him to make sure Angel is okay :) i also love the acro tricks that Collins does :) it helps that Jesse L Martin is super good looking :) it's amazing how many actors/actresses is in this that i didn't even know could sing :) xxx

Jeremy Jordan who played Winn on supergirl also sung a Santa Fe on the Newsies musical, tho it's different. Hope Joe and Winn makes a santa fe reference lmao
Look up his cover of the Ballad of Serenity from Firefly on UA-cam (with Carlos Valdes and Rick Cosnett singing acapella harmonies with him). It's really good.

I just watched this movie for the first time recently, and had never seen the musical before. I had no idea that Jesse L. Martin (who I know as "Lenny's partner on Law and Order") had such a gorgeous voice AND originated the role of Tom Collins on Broadway!
When the opportunity came for Jesse to do this movie, he was still working on Law and Order, as Det. Greene. He went to the writers and said that this role was his dream and really wanted to do it but wasn't sure how to explain his absence from L&O. This is why he was shot in "Tombstone" the 20th episode of Season 15. He was back at the start of Season 16. That gave him all the time he needed. He thanked L&O for giving him all the time he needed. It would've been hard to explain how he was gone on a vacation for as long as he was. By having him shot, it was easily explained.
This is my favorite song in RENT, I think. Whenever this comes up when we're playing music, my wife tells me I need to sing it for her Especially in 2020, we would always laugh at the "times are shitty, but I'm pretty sure they can't get worse" and it would cheer us up and make us think about happier things
It's always been my favorite song of the show. I got to see it live 2 times- front row cheap 20 buck tickets. So close that when the actors sang, you got hit with their spit.

Adds to the grittiness and realism of the scene. - Collins' infectious and playful energy throughout. You can tell Jesse had a ball with this number. - 1:09 Nice! - the subway setting and interaction with the background train riders - Jesse and Wilson's masterful pole work - 2:11 Gain, gain, gain! - the inclusion of Roger into this number (in which he is absent in the actual musical) - the flawless vocals (which of course comes from editing in flawless studio vocals) - the final seconds after "Yeah...", where they are all in wistful hopeful bliss...on a New York subway line
Yeah. I'm not a fan of this movie at all, a lot of songs and scenes are mishandled (Rent, Take Me or Leave Me). But not this one. This one is done in a way that only a movie could pull off, and it's genuinely quite nice. A lot of scenes make the sense of scale a little too big, but this song does it just right. The subway is a good backdrop compared to a metal table. The way the environment is incorporated into the music is good too. Anything scenes with Angel in them are the best parts of this movie.

Have you ever been in NYC in the winter? Dirty, cold, windy, etc. Piles of snow that are blackened by exhaust. Imagining Sunny Santa Fe- or California Dreamin- seems natural in that environment.
It's never over 4 stories tall. It's a large town with big city culture. It snows, but the sun is radioactive here, and it melts in 2 days. Also, August is monsoons while the rest of the nation swelters. It is Deadsville in a pandemic, though.
Oh great question and I know the answer. I don’t remember the television program but I am pretty certain it was a PBS series and the subject was music but Santa Fe was once greatly romanticized by a lot song on the East Coast, esp heavily dense industrial areas. A lot of old timey speakeasy songs mentions Santa Fe as well. Bob Dylan’s song was referenced too. The reason was that Santa Fe use to be the last stop on the West on most cheapest train lines from a couple of major cities from the East. It’s both about the whole “where the sidewalk ends” and the idea of wide open spaces during the time when the working class were cramped together was ideal and appealing. I saw this movie after I saw that program and maybe it’s just coincidence but I thought that it’s being performed on a subway train was a good touch.
@@juujhg1874 This makes SO much sense - that the farthest away one could get from NYC for the cheapest price was literally "the end of the line". Thank you!
I am so used to thinking of Jesse Martin as that guy from Law & Order or the Flash but he is such a studly singer in this movie. He needs more roles that let him have a spotlight.
I went to my first show in the opening season in NYC. In the previous couple of years my understanding of AIDS/Hiv and gay rights had expanded significantly due to stuff going on in my life at that time. Though I'm straight, I could relate to the pain, disenfranchisement, and struggle for my own reasons. I had/have medical issues, was poor at the time, an artist of sorts, and living in the cold and urban environment. To boot, though I'm a boring, white male, many of my friends, if not most, are minorities or second language speakers. At the play, I sat in the balcony with my gf and cried profusely. It was the most moving experience I'd had in years and it helped motivate me to learn about how people with some difference are treated, and to continue to train for an Aids Ride in spite of considerable obstacles.
