    This is probably my favorite song of all time, not just from Metallica, but from any band. I started listening to this as a metal head teen in the 80's, and it never made me contemplate suicide. It actually somehow encouraged me and gave me fight. I have felt like those lyrics describe, and it made me push through. The music is incredible. Kirk does a solo that I think is one of the best guitar solos I have ever heard. I love to see different live versions of this, because he adapts it, and keeps it fresh. Metallica is one of my favorite bands, and has been since I first heard it back in middle school. They captured all of their best in this song. Loved watching you react, it is a moving song, and you got rocked by it. God bless you!

      Have you heard Greta Van Fleet yet? Many say they are a modern Led Zepplin. While some of their songs do sound like them, not all do. They are really good. Or at least I think so. It's nice to see young artists playing real instruments. My daughter and I saw them in concert, and they put on a great show, for a fairly young band.

      Being 14 years old and finding the soundtrack genre of my life.

    Metallica has always gotten a bad rap....I've heard it all my life. If it wasnt for Metallica and the music.......I WOULD NOT BE HERE. My mom passed away in 87. I was devastated. What got me thru is the first 3 albums. I finally came to terms with the way I last spoke to my mom. We had an argument, cause of her drinking and I didnt want that in my life. I wanted to go to school. I just graduated. I told her to never come by drunk again.......and that was the last time I spoke to her. It just kept me pushing to live. Those songs healed me everytime I heard them.
    I lost my oldest boy on 6-24-18. I'm still missing him. Metallica is helping me thru this also. I told him I was going to take him to his first concert, Metallica ...but never happen.

It takes you right to that place emotionally where you feel that stuff rise to the surface. It is like a piece of theater, so much more than just a song. A beautifully dark composition that you can hop onto that roller-coaster of emotion many times in your life and it always takes you back. That was just a priceless reaction :)
    One of the first metal ballads I ever heard back in the 80's. James Hetfield wrote the song in response to their gear getting stolen after a show, I believe. They were really depressed about it, so this song came from that.

    • @continentalaquatics2725
      @continentalaquatics2725 6 років тому +6

      Bryan Sproles Yes, if I recall correctly, James wrote the song after having his gear stolen. More specifically, it was in regard to an amplifier that got stolen (which was the last material item his Mother bought for him before she passed away).
      James fell into a short bout of depression and wrote this from the perspective of someone who was sold on the idea of taking their own life.
      I don’t know if he was feeling suicidal after having the amplifier stolen, but he was definitely depressed in the wake of the amplifier being stolen.
      I’m glad the song wasn’t a self-fulfilling prophecy. It gives an interesting insight into the mind of someone who is toying with the notion of committing suicide. It’s sad, but educational at the same time.

    Don't sweat the tears this song still gets me every time too. Just watching you read through the lyrics, I was tearing up all over again AFTER shedding a few during the actual song. I was one of those kids that this song helped through some rough patches, suicide was never a real option IMO but to this day I think about it. Sometimes your brain gets to fucking with you and you wonder if it would be better to just end it now and get it over with. You hear something like this and you realise its not just me, other people feel like this too and they carry on. It helps me find enough to get through at least one more day.
    As always, your reactions bring a smile to my dreary existence, love and light be with you.

      Thanks for the message. Your response reminds me of how for so many years people were told not to talk about suicide to a depressed person. The logic was that it would either give or encourage one to act on their depression/suicidality. We now see how suicide prevention has taken off with the onus of talking about suicidal thoughts and not dismissing them. Take care...

      PinkMetalHead this song and sanitarium I played so much I ruined my cassette tapes. I truly believe without these two songs I wouldn’t be here today. I overcome some real shit and got strength from the songs, and they will live forever in my heart. At a time when depression was taboo and shrugged off I only had music to get my through, and I know I’m not alone. Unfortunately we are still awhile away it seems to recognize that mental illness is the real deal, and we shouldn’t be afraid to admit it to ourselves and not feel ashamed asking for help and taking seriously. Sorry for long post, but I wanted to share my story in a mini tale. Take care all and remember there’s help out there. Love ya!

    This song still stirs up all of those emotions it did, as if it were yesterday. All the depression, anger, hate, self loathing, and feeling of being lost in this sometimes cruel world. Your reaction was priceless. When you see people commenting about how this song saved them, believe it. I lived through all of that turmoil. It's amazing how big an effect a song can have on so many people. I'm happy to say I'm doing well these days, and love to reminisce about the 80s and 90s. I used to drive a 1969 Buick Gran Sport. I painted the Metallica logo on the hood and trunk, covering both. It was the Metallica-mobile, and I went to several concerts with it, including 5 Metallica concerts. James and Jason actually saw it, and said they loved it. Brought a smile to my face

    Nice pickup on the Joe Satriani call because Kirt Hammet (lead guitarist) was tutored by Joe in his early days. Hence the reason why there's similarities in Kirk's solo style.

    This has been and likely will always be my favorite song from them. It’s purely anti-suicide in a way only James could write. Musically it’s one of their best composed songs and lyrically it’s hard hitting. This is a song that got me through a lot, and I mean a lot of bad times. Like many others, it saved me multiple times as a teenager. I don’t know if I would still be here if I didn’t have Metallica and my guitar throughout my teenage years.

    • @paulwalsh2344
      @paulwalsh2344 6 років тому +1

      I can't agree that it's "anti" suicide. I think the real impact of this song is that it genuinely speaks to people hurting: "I know... I get how bad it feels... You are not alone..." and maybe those hurting people realize they aren't alone. And that's the power of great music. It touches people as deeply as their deepest feelings.
      And after the darkest night... the dawn also comes.

    • @mnconservative4616
      @mnconservative4616 6 років тому

      Paul Walsh, you nailed it. This is exactly how I feel about it. Listening to Fade to Black gave me an outlet for all the anger, hate, depression, and all the other mixed emotions. Instead of internalizing all of this, it gave me a way to let it all out. Crank up the car stereo and pop in Ride the Lightning, whole album. This song did save me multiple times. I don't think I would have committed suicide, but it did give me an impression of you're not alone. Between that, and all the other metalheads out there, we found new friends, and people who understood us.
