In this video I paddle out to fish the edge of a big drop off, a deep water trench that runs parallel with the north coast of Jersey.
I decided to dust off the heavier setups for a trip out targeting Tope on the North coast of Jersey.
With a slightly strong breeze from the SW and a bit more swell than i would have liked for the occasion I welcomed the idea of a few hours offshore using some larger baits to target Tope with the chance of also catching bullhuss and conger eels whilst dropping large dead baits on the edge of the offshore trench.

yeah really close call ay! .. I know ay what a muppet.. I had it clipped onto the other side of the Kayak I should have really just moved it to the port side right next to the rod holder!

@FISHISLANDTV just had my first bass of the season lure fishing off the top. Wind was a bit stronger than I had hoped. Sods law isn't it. All week perfect...gets to the weekend and wind builds up and changes direction. Keep up the good videos have watched most of them now!
That’s always the way mate.
For me it seems it will be brilliant tides and weather etc etc whilst I’m on shift then for my days off it’s like the “perfect storm” lol.

ohh mate swell and wind was a nightmare out there.. it did calm down though but had to paddle back in by then.

Awesome video bud. Heart elevated a while after that kind of tipping point. That won’t happen again :) you got to the lever drag quick enough while leaning the opposite way to it to counterbalance that angry big tope lunge. Some relief that was ay shag. Still up for a big paddle out there one day if I still can. Awesome fish to land or disgorge along side.

Nice video as always mate. It's awkward enough handling tope on my small SIB let alone a kayak - good man-handling there, they need it don't they! First tope of the season always reminds us how strong they are. Mackerel have just hit our shores so I will be out chasing tope soon too buddy. Tight lines

So close! Admittedly my technique was dreadful after watching my other videos back handling other tope I realized I should have been unhooking with just its head on my lap before bringing them onboard for some pictures.

Yeah I think the last trip I did for them was April 2023.. il try squeeze in a few more trips this season out that way.
I would love to catch a big Huss or Eel this year from the Kayak.
Unfortunately they sit in that deeper water that I couldn’t get too on this occasion.. perhaps next time ay!

yeah I have a Viking 400, and what I love about it is you sit so low in the water, it makes it a wet ride but you feel very stable
yeah that’s it mate the low center of gravity when sat down is really good.
I’m trying to think of what it would actually take to flip one of these things!
Play them a bit longer to tire them out

I was thinking that on the paddle back in. I usually use the lighter setups for them 12-20lbs which takes a little longer but much more fun. Only trouble is with that tide running, sometimes I need a much heavier lead to hold bottom I was using my 20-30lbs in this video.

Glad you’re enjoying the video matey. I think these are flashmer scissors they are ok but I think you’ll be able to find a better set at fishing stores or online to be honest buddy.

How do you find pulling the anchor back in on a kayak? Always drift on mine but want to try anchoring but worry I won't it get it back in lol
So depending on the run of tide mate but I usually just use an anchor trip or small cable ties.
