  • This is an authentic nyonya prawns called asam prawns or asam heh. In English, it is called tamarind prawns. Tamarind is asam in Malay language, which is also a colloquial Penang Hokkien word. In Malay, this dish is known as udang goreng asam. My mother made this simple but extremely tasty finger-licking good asam prawns or asam heh on every Chinese New Year day as a traditional family recipe. It is best serve with a dipping sambal belachan sauce. In this video, I will show you how to make a simple sambal belachan sauce to go with asam prawns.

    Made this dish after watching your video a few days ago. Turned up very good, the whole plate was empty after dinner. Even the head and shells of the prawns were chewed up as the flavor was very very nice. The serving plate was cleaned up as the sauce was literally wiped by everybody's rice. Thank you for the great recipe, looking forward for more recipes from you.

    This is easy to prepare but very tasty and goes very well with nasi lemak, cucumber and the special nyonya sambal. The nyonya nasi lemak also comes with a nyonya fried fish.

    Had some cod and used this recipe - sedap. I added the sambal with the pan sauce though, instead of a dipping. The sambal was made some time ago but just using Vietnamese shrimp paste as I cannot get belacan here in Norway.

    Hello there. Thank you so much for making your wonderful recipes to share with us. EXCELLENT.
    I was wondering for this recipe would/could I use Kecap Manis instead of the dark Soy ?
    What do you think Victor ?
    Thanks again X

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor  3 роки тому +1

      Hi @Robbie Dove...you’re very welcome. I’m delighted that you think highly of my recipes, which means I’m doing something right. Thanks for letting me know. As to your question, if you don’t have the standard dark soy, you can substitute using a kecap manis. The taste will be slightly different from my version, which is fine. So the answer is yes as long as you like your prawns to have that caramalised sweet taste. Cheers, Victor

    Hi Victor, can you please share the blender brand used here to make sambal belacan? Thanks.

    • @foodtripwithvictor
      @foodtripwithvictor  3 роки тому

      Hi @Wel Look...I wish I can still remember but I've had it at least more than 15 years. I got it at a pop-up stall inside the shopping mall "Gurney Plaza" in Penang, Malaysia. But that was so long ago. When I get to go back to Penang again (after covid), I will take a look and see if I can find it. Although, you should be able to pick up a small spice grinder at a larger department store, like Tesco. Cheers, Victor

      That is interesting. First time I’ve heard of it. Some people are left handed and some are right handed. Are you saying a left handed person cannot be a Peranakan because Peranakan doesn’t eat with a left hand? That is funny 🤣

      @@foodtripwithvictor my mum is a left handed but eat with her right hand and cebok with her left hand. She was trained from young. A few of my Malay friends did the same way as my mum did.
