I would say the original was more sad and less optimistic, it had a theme of knowing she wasn't allowed to feel this, she knew what she wanted but knew she couldn't get it, making her sad and bottling it up. The new ariel is eager and strong-willed, she know she want too but rather than thinking she can't think she is allowed to have these thoughts she is loud and clear about it, not willing to be quiet.
Both work really well for ariel, it's just two interpretations that makes it mostly two different "moments" in Ariel life, in the original movie it seems much earlier in her process, she is longing for it but can't even consider the idea to really do it as she is afraid. In the new movie it is the moment she says "I WANT TO DO THIS" loud and clear, she is proud and strong, something that takes more time for Ariel to do in the first movie (and I would even say that she almost never get to in the first place).

Yeah, I saw a similar comment of someone saying she "sang through her nose" and was "off key" more often than Jodi... Then someone else said that they didn't really know about vocal technique but she sounded beautiful... Here is what I replied to explain what was actually going on and that Halle didn't sound nasally but was actually using proper technique for MIXING... I don't like MISINFORMATION and trying to find non existent problems in order to justify not liking the casting of Halle:
"Halle actually has great technique as well (not sure what others are on about. Halle is not singing through her nose per say, but actually mixing between chest voice and head voice so her belts don't feel too shouty, but are instead powerful and light at the same time. When you mix, the sound resonates/is placed mostly around the cheeks and nose area. That doesn't mean the singer sings through their nose or sounds nasally, it is just the proper technique to produce a well balance mixed belt... Actually, when you use chest voice, the sound is placed in/comes from the chest area, and when you use head voice it is more around the forehead... Therefore, when you mix and make the two meet, the sound will mostly resonate from the cheeks and nose area 🤷🏾 Halle is doing exactly that, and with a lot of agility. I'm really not sure what someone can objectively criticize about her singing, she is technically really good. If someone prefers another version of the song, that's fine, it is their opinion, but there is no reason to "invent" problems with Halle's technique, vocal agility and capacity to emote when there is none (refering to OP's comment, not yours)"...

They rather had "actual singers/actors" and were more concerned about the fame they had versus how well they fit into the role. It gives me hope that big names like Disney care a lot about skill and ability and are willing to pick up new or unknown actors/actresses compared to casting based on a famous name like with Beauty and the Beast. Hopefully it gives people who are going into the industry a stronger incentive to try out for bigger roles.
