There wasn't just dinosaurs and pterosaurus, they show marine reptiles, mosasaurus and plesiosaurus were main focus in very first episode. Also sea turtles. Lizards, birds and mammals shown in later episodes. But yes, missed opportunity to show crocodilians in freshwater episode.
I think he means the lack of species. Many were just tyrannosaurs or raptors, which makes sense because of the time this show takes place in. But tbh the storylines featured are the biggest problem.
Prehistoric Planet was great, but man, maybe I'm just seeing things through my nostalgia-colored childhood glasses, but Walking with Dinosaurs just hit different. It was so... vast, and majestic and terrifyingly immersive. And the music was the cherry on top, it truly felt like I was being transported into a prehistoric adventure. Even a rendition or remaster of WWD using modern CGI would be a dream come true.
Also, who can forget the heart breaking Ornithocheirus episode, the momma T. rex dying to save her babies and of course Big Al? Prehistoric Planet tried too hard to not "traumatise" kids, yet they really missed the point.
@@samrizzardi2213 i dont think they were trying to avoid traumatizing kids. If we can have docus with nothing but blood and gore the whole time we can have one with less
I really liked this series and it had a lot of great creatures but it was weird to me how there were no pachycephalosaurs in the series ans they were very common later in the Cretaceous.
I obviously love the visuals and the new paleo content, but I preferred the _Walking with Dinosaurs_ episode formula. Also, the former seemed to do its best to not be as heartbreaking as some _Walking with..._ episodes were, which I think was a shame, as that was one of the elements that made that series so memorable.
Velociraptor absolutely was living during the late Cretaceous period. I agree they should have shown the gators/crocs though. I didn’t need t-rex vs triceratops though. We have seen that a million times. I liked seeing them do stuff besides kill each other.
It’s not that Velociraptor wasn’t from the Late Cretaceous, it’s that it wasn’t from the Maastrichtian stage of the Lare Cretaceous. Velociraptor went extinct right before this time. But the dinosaur in the documentary is actually not Velociraptor. The developers stated that it is actually an unnamed Velociraptorine Dromaeosaur. The main reason they called it Velociraptor was because 1: it is a very iconic animal, the main audience mostly only know Velociraptor due to a certain franchise. 2: It is a lot easier for both the audience & the narrator to say Velociraptor than Velociraptorine Dromaeosaur all the time.
GREAT VIDEO I think they wanted to show dinos in all their glory in the cretaceous , but I hope in future seasons they will cover the jurassic and triassic as well as the permian and ice age, like the previous series. Loved the cgi and graphics
I think they knew the show will be compared to Walking with the Dinosaur. So they tried to do it differently. Also, the history of the dinosaurs is so vast, there is a possibility to show a slice of the era in different regions, to dive deeper into specific time period.
I thought the dinosaur designs themselves were quite good, wholly separate from the CGI. A few stand-outs are of course, the Mononykus, the Tarbosaurus, and the Deinocheirus, but I really liked the Edmontosautus and the Arctic dromaeosaur in particular
loved this series. All the dinosaurs were shown going about their lives. Did not miss dinosaur fighting. That does not interest me. The pterodactysl were truly magnificent. What a awsome sight that would have been to see them flying in the sky..
If in the year 66,002,022 someone makes a documentary about the great African wildlife before it all got put into nature reserves, will you feel cheated if there's no fight between an elephant and a lion?
It's actually supposed to be taking place in the last 6 million years of the Cretaceous, the Maastrichtian, hence showing animals like Pachyrhinosaurus, which are not known from 66mya. The "Velociraptor" shown is based on an indeterminate Velociraptorine, which may or may not turn out to be a species of Velociraptor in time. In his Twitter Q&A Darren mentioned that they couldn't just say "indeterminate velociraptorine" in a documentary like this, so they just called it a Velociraptor.
I will admit I was kind of down when it was only gonna showcase the late Cretaceous, I wanted them to do the Triassic and Jurassic as well but the one we got is ok
@@ExtremeMadnessX It reflects what we knew at the time it depicted more species. Most lay people back then didn’t know much more than what was taught in elementary school. That’s why it was so impactful.

When we talk about Walking with dinosaurs nostalgia is bitch. Because there were many, many inaccuracies in that show, from animals in wrong time and places, to their wrong sizes and horrible shrink wraping. As usual all complaints about Prehistoric Planet are mostly nitpicking.
Most if not all of these errors are tied to the era, it isn’t fair to criticize a documentary on its inaccuracies, especially when it comes to paleontology. Shrink wrapping was the norm in the late 90’s. To be honest, I think the scientific accuracy and quality of the CGI were the only advantages Prehistoric planet have over Walking with Dinosaurs
I 100% agree I would have loved to see the tyrannosaur vs triceratops fight. Yeah I know the creators wanted to show that these were animals not monsters but tyrannosaurus was indeed a fearsome predator and that should have been shown
The only thing I would have to hard disagree with you on is the soundtrack. That shit slaps so hard, WWD has some good scores but they really just don’t come close to what a lot of PHP has
Have that season as a sample. Give us 3 more seasons that are as long as they need to be (most likely longer), that focus on each of the 3 periods, Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. That way we can see things like hunting, day to day, territory disputes, breeding, migration andaybe even talk about the theories, why do we think the dinosaurs behaved that way? That's what I would want. But that's a huge scope.
Most of these prehistoric animal documentaries only cover the Phanerozoic eras but animal life actually originated in the neoprotorezoic era It would be cool if one paleo doc covered pre Cambrian creatures like dickinsonia and spriggina (just to name a few)
Considering that both the triceratops' horns and frill were a lot more fragile than expected, it is becoming less likely that triceratops and tyrannosaurus fought like we may have imagined as kids. We're going to have to have the Jurassic Park franchise to cover that part of fanservice.
I found it very disappointing when the narrator said he wanted to see more violence like Rex vs Triceratops. I, for one, am thoroughly sick of overdoing the violence. I am so sick of T Rex, T Rex, T Rex! A person might think they were there from the start to the end of the whole Mesozoic Era, and that the land was just chock full of them. They only appeared at the very end and the land was chock full of largely peaceful herbivores. Is this the same blood lust that fed killing in the arenas? Or cock fights? Or bearbaiting? In that sense, such movies are not truthful and merely pander to our baser instincts. There, l said it.

I see it argued a lot, but I'll stick to my guns. Setting Prehistoric Planet during the Mastrichian and focusing solely on that time period was a boon. The show would've been far too muddled, far too brief in covering each of the environments and animals, or simply require more episodes which would've been far too expensive to do, leading to compromised quality in what we would've gotten, if it had to span multiple time periods as well as multiple biomes. I loved that they had a clear focus with Prehistoric Planet, and that they chose to hone in on a single time period in greater detail.
