it's really interesting the way this technically gets easier the more games you complete, but really starts to feel more difficult as the games left are the later levels of the games you struggle with the most
I love how relaxed this guy is. It's fun to see a speed runner who occasionally plays some casual games and comes up with interesting challenges for speedrunning purely for fun. It's also cathartic to watch a speed runner struggle to beat a game normally.
I love how it almost becomes a form of psychological warfare. You're constantly paranoid about when the next switch will happen and which game it'll be, and it causes things like panicking during a boomboom fight.
This is incredible. The Boom Boom death in particular shows how this format forces speedrunners to actually *play* the games instead of relying on memorialization and practiced technique. I'd love to see this in a race format, where the games switch at the same time for both runners.
I actually love how sometimes your inputs for one game go through the other; it makes it feel like there's a momentum there and you're literally running between universes or whatever
Agreed. One might call it a waste of time, but I think it would be amusing just having to sit there in anticipation. Having no idea what's coming next, or when. Especially since your hand might be off the buttons, making it that much more awkward to suddenly need to be doing whatever the next game throws you into. Not to mention that wait would be nerve-racking because you would be focused entirely on the wait, rather than being focused on the game you're playing in the moment.

This is like that episode of Futurama where the time kept jumping. Remember how the Harlem Globetrotters kept skipping ahead and could keep the momentum of their game going?
(1:24) Yep, you only get 2 continues in SMB2, which send you back to the very start of the world (and they can be wasted if you're still in world 1). (1:28) And, you skip right by a grass patch that contains a valuable 1-up, next to the POW block at the top of that stack of platforms. (5:50) SMB1 clear! Not surprising that you finished that one first. I'll bet right now that SMB2 (U) will be the last one to finish. (My prediction turned out to be true.) (6:41) Okay, you got that 1-up this time. (8:34) I don't think I ever knew that hidden power up block was there! (Or, if I did know in the past, I had completely forgotten about it.) (9:38) Nice door placement. I've done that before. Fortunately, the game still lets you enter it when that happens. (11:17) Yeah, a few mushroom blocks in that jar-filled room of 6-1 are booby trapped, and you'll get unavoidably smacked by the emerging Cobrat when you lift it, unless you "disarm" the trap by throwing another Cobrat at that jar first to kill the hidden Cobrat lying in wait ahead of time. (You don't need to enter any "trapped" jars to get the important things anyway. The 7th jar from the left is safe and has the 1-up(s), and the 5th jar from the right which has the key is also safe.) (14:44) Not taking the quicksand shortcut in SMB3 8-2? (15:05) SMB2 (J) complete! (15:58) "So long-ee, Bowser!" SMB3 is now done, and you can play SMB2 (US) normally! (17:28) Welp. I guess SMB2 (U) isn't exactly your forté. (18:36) And that's game! SMB2 (U) is finished!
Did you recognize whether you're in SMB1 or SMB2-J just as instantaneously as with the visually different SMB2-U and SMB3 or do those take a couple more moments to register? Just wondering because that feels like something I'd struggle with but you've obviously played both of them a LOT.
Outside of maybe water levels since those are the only stages that remain visually completely identical between both games, if you become familiar enough with both games it's not that hard to tell which game is which, Lost Levels has so many slightly altered sprites that it ends up looking and feeling fairly distinct from SMB1 (the best word I'd use to describe it is it looks more "rugged"), especially in overworld and underground sections. Even in water levels the HUD text at the top has shadows in Lost Levels whereas SMB1 does not. So with enough familiarity it becomes nearly as easy to identify which of those two it is as with the other two games, just takes some getting used to. No problem at all for Kosmic, I'd imagine, with all his experience.
This is a good challenge for professional gamers, playing Super Mario Bros game with random switches and speed runs. It does take good skills so you don't die between each different Mario Bros game in the speed run.
I didn't have any trouble or confusion watching this, so I don't relate to the other commenters. This one seemed stressful, Kosmic would sometimes just die even when it didn't switch games, likely since he's worried about it switching at any possible moment. If the switches weren't random, then it would allow for some more strategy, hopefully it wouldn't be too easy though.
something like this with some really good quality logic - just checking if you are on the ground before switching - would be SUPER goddamn fun. I don't think? bizhawk can do runahead, but configuring that can help break the lag away and make it feel just like console. I'd give that a shot.
