This is the third episode of retrospective, a series where we look at forgotten devices that were once loved, hated, famous, and infamous. No I didn't own mine back in the day. However I've bought one earlier this year. I've always wanted the original Game Park Holdings Trilogy since the Dingoo Days. 😊
I have one bought about 8 years ago. Joystick is really good for arcade style games.
yes I own still a GP32 I bought on release as well as some other branded bits and bobs like earphones cases, lanyards etc, I also own their second system the GP2X and some bits and bobs for that, its a first edition with some additional bits like the revised thumbstick. all mint in box of course I always look after my stuff.

Perhaps look into the LeapFrog handhelds like the Didj that people used to hack real Linux onto and emulate games on? Nobody talks about that ever anymore.
Still have one. And also the successors. It has been the first step into owning and playing on a lot of handheld devices next to the know ones put out by the big companies known in the western world.
I'm surprised by how well they have held up. It seems that the ones that were held onto still work to this day!
Ohhhhhhh man I so want them. Just imagine all the homebrew software that never escaped those platforms!

Funny story. I was heavily into the GP32 scene when I was a senior in high school and was excited about the upcoming Wanna Be Wizard game, which was only available in Korean. I reached out to the developer for the game and offered to translate the game for free as I was Korean and they agreed! So, they sent over a Microsoft Word file of the game's script and I plugged away at it for the next couple months. Eventually, I finished translating the script and sent it back to the developer and they sent me a brand new BLU console and a copy of Wanna Be Wizard for my efforts! Sadly, the an English port was never released (most likely due to financial reasons), but still a fun memory to look back at. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

My friend used to have GP2X-F300. That device and Cowon D2 was my first introduction to homebrew scene

@@retrotechdad Subbed. Can't wait for that episdoe. Now that I think about it, GP2X might have been my first experience with Linux. Also, I was feeling nostalgic so I googled around and found out Rockbox Forums is still going on! People are still making custom themes for Cowon D2 and other 2000's devices in 2023! That is kinda amazing. So many memories of playing doom and homebrew games on this small device when I was in high school dorm!
This Handheld is the Original OG in the Retro Emulation Handheld game. Also let's not forget the Dingoo A320, Gemei A330, and the Let Cool Handhelds from China.

I remember considering one of these as well as the GP2X. The first thing I ended up getting, though, was an Openpandora (or just Pandora).

@@retrotechdad Cool! Pandora owner here too, couldn't afford to kick in the for the Pyra. (y'know what? Now I feel like I've seen your screen name on the Pandora/Pyra forums back in the day.) Although I need to fix the hinge on mine, stress fractures from age and possibly temperature. I'm going to have to get a part 3D printed to replace it. It's sfary because it's going to cost a bit since I don't have a 3D printer and the hinge is the most tricky part of it. I had to do that with the battery cover already.

Same Here, We were in the middle of a Recession and I couldn't get a job. There were so many games I wanted to play but couldn't afford.
I still have mine, though sadly it no longer works. An original NLU that I had to order from some super-sketchy importer and wait like two months to get. Such a groundbreaking little console, and the "scene" that sprung up around it was one of the best of all time.
Yea, I remember having to order mine back in the day from Lik-Sang. It's cool that you still have yours!

Awesome Vid. I never did get one but got one of it's spiritual successors, the Open Pandora. Maybe it's the algorithms but I'm seeing a lot of vids for these recently. MVG did one on another successor a few weeks back, the GP2X Wiz

I owned the NLU and then the FLU. Never got my hands on a BLU though. I also composed some music for a few homebrew titles. Would be fun to trawl the sites to see if i can find any of them.

Well, it's a little trivia that maybe no one knows. The GP32 was developed in Korea about 15 years ago. Back then, the Nintendo DS was very popular in Korea.
At that time, there was no cultural content industry in the world to brag about. The K-pop and drama industries did exist, but they were still immature, and perhaps none of you had heard of the Korean cultural industry 15 years ago.
The high popularity of NDSs has become almost a social phenomenon in Korea, and President Lee Myung Bak, then the country's president, asked, "Why can't we create an NDS?" This is when GP32 caught his eye. He hoped that GP32 would become the next NDS in Korea.
At the time, his right-wing regime was rather unpopular with young Koreans. People mocked and called the device Myung-Ten-Do, after the president. Because of the happening, GP32 at least received attention. However, Korea's gaming industry was not mature enough to save the device, and GP32 died like that.
This is something that developing countries that have tried to develop consoles, especially those that have qualifications for their culture, will experience. I think something similar has probably happened with Zebo. Anyway, I think it's probably interesting for those of you in the first world.

I still have my GP32, a FLU version (or was it BLU?). I purchased it partly as a portable video player for fansubbed anime. I had Dyhard and maybe one other original game, but I don't remember which. There were quite a few demo titles back then too, the fighting game, Bloody Cross was memorable to me for it's animation. It's too bad the only Emulator for this doesn't have any sound (possibly meant only for developers?) I recall back then a lot of developers were against emulating it even though it had emulation for other hardware (I guess to push more people to pay for it) and now today it seems like a prime candidate to preserve some of the games it had.
Yea, I'm a bit bummed that there aren't better ways to play the games especially for preservation. Very cool that you still have your GP32, hold onto it! It's a special device. 🙏🤗

I may have misheard you, but this wasn't their only handheld console, I had this & it's successor, the GP2X. May still have them both, somewhere. Shit I think I even had the Wiz as well.
Game Park is different from GPH (GamePark Holdings) which was from former Game Park employees. GPH was responsible for the GP2X, Wiz, etc

6:32 At least we can still play these games in some way or form. However Dingoo Games games are STILL lost media with no way to Emulate them. Thankfully 7 Days is still playable on certain platforms. 😢
We definitely lost a bit with the GP32 as well but it's tough to see any media get lost.
