Steve Pearson they initially made the game so you could control as many units as you’d like. But they decided that made the game too easy and removed the tactics out of the game. So they limited to 4.
It's funny how when Warcraft II came out using sounds and voice assets from Warcraft I, people were like "Cool!" But these days if any video game tried doing that, they'd be like "Ehh it should be DLC, not a new game." Still, I had fond memories of Warcraft I. My dad would always let his base get destroyed in the last level and mount an assault on the enemy's base with a single Conjurer or Warlock and a Catapult. That was before he discovered the "Archer/Spear Line" which he'd position at a bridge and slaughter everything but Catapults (which he'd send out a Knight/Raider to deal with it). These days, I'd probably do something similar as seen in these videos where I quickly build up a small force and go raiding with Daemons later on.
The orc campaign in nowhere near as ear-grating as Human one with constant repetitions of the same voice lines. And I think it has better music as well.
Right click mouse button does nothing (running on Windows 98). Damn, i forgot how i played this game on WIndows 95 back in 1996-2000. Man, the nostalgia.
I play it in dosbox and it RMB works. are you sure your version is for Windows? maybe it's for DOS too? maybe you'll have better luck to run in from Dosbox too
When you play these older RTS games do you ever curse the nascent mechanics in them? Dune was pretty crazy to watch, especially at 1.5 or 2 times the speed. I actually stopped watching that play-through of yours because my own wrists were tired and sore just watching you having to micromanage every little thing. Probably no point in recording the other side of the game, with the humans? I assume it'd be about the same thing, except with blue units running every which way. Never got to play this one, but I did play WC2, though I was just a young kid at the time and somehow managed to find cheats for it take THAT, RED DRAGONS. Well at least there wasn't a luck roll with a certain wyrm running about, destroying entire civilizations :P Thanks for the entertainment Eino. I'm off to go be amazed at your Magic Carpet 1 and 2 domination, AGAIN.
Yea, the RTS genre has evolved to a better gameplay experience from the early times. It's somewhat curious the developers of the first games didn't consider those few things that would've been simple to fix back then and would've made the whole gameplay much smoother. I've already recorded the Human campaign also. It has a different, but related storyline and different, but similar missions. I never played this game much either so was curious to see how long it would take to finish the campaigns compared to other RTS games of that time. Thanks for commenting :)
The human units really were far superior. Healing units as opposed to raising skeletons is objectively more powerful. If I remember correctly archers had more range than spear men, but dealt slightly less damage. Also, after watching your human playthrough, the humans have a much easier time dealing with the slimes in the dungeon levels. The orcs took forever to take them out during the Griselda mission.
yeah I think orcs end up more powerful than the humans. It doesn't seem like it at times, but I require many less spearmen than I would archers to beat a level if im using skeles. and then the unholy armor, while not as useful in single player, allows for the orc player to "heal" in the sense that an almost dead troop can now have prolonged life. which the fast attack speed in the game enables some battles to have the tide turned in your favor because your guy is going to town on the enemy. Use the UA on daemons and now you are unstoppable (except for invisible elementals that destroy your warlocks and necros...)
oh no. not crafting war. um. hmmm. orc farms. oh. orc food. orc crops. orc made burgers and pizza! :) yes! orc macdonalds, orc kfc, orc restaurants. i'm coming! give me the addresses! :P
The Cleric's most advanced spell is Invisibility, which makes other units undetectable until they attack. It gets REALLY annoying in the later missions, because they'll sneak Conjurers and Elementals in and absolutely wreck your base. The solution is to raise enough spearmen to block off choke points, like bridges and tree gaps, so that even invisible units can't get through.
You cant right click to move. Right clicking centers the screen around the cursor. Scrolling can be done but you have to move the cursor to the edge of the screen and then hold down the left-click. Personally Ive learned to right click to move around and generally its faster imo.If you are using DOSBox then you may need to lower the cycles using Ctrl+F11. This will make it so scrolling is useable.
in order to give orders you need to click the move button or, more commonly, hit the "m" key. "A" attacks and you just have to learn the hotkeys to make orders happen efficiently.
I know this comment is old but if anyone still cares someone made a nice little tool for that: community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/954-warcraft-mouse-helper/
I installed it now again with DOSBox. However scrolling with the mouse is ways too fast even when the lowest speed is set. Did you have any problems with the scrolling speed of the mous? It is quite annoying because the only option to change the view is to click on the minimap.
Yeah, it can be too fast especially if you have cycles set to auto or max. You could try and change the cycle setting in DOSBox. For example inside DOSBox type cycles=20000 and see how the game runs. If the game is too slow you can increase cycles by holding CTRL and pressing F12 repeatedly. And if the game runs fine with those cycles, but scroll speed is still too fast try lowering cycles by CTRL and F11. You can edit the preset cycle setting inside dosbox.conf file also.
Fixed cycles helped. For some reasons some games display max. CPU cycles in percent, others the number of cycles. Strange. Thanks for the hint, now it runs ways better. Have you recorded the game via FRAPS or DOSBox owns recording option?
Gameplay by Udo Krawallo NP, glad to hear it helped. If you set cycles in dosbox.conf the game will always run with that setting. OFC you need to set proper cycles for each game separately. Auto works just fine with some games, but can also often cause problems. For recording this game I used FRAPS, because I used a soundfont for MIDI music playback and the music is not captured by DOSBox recording option.
einokeino303 That would be an option but I rather set a fixed cycle number at the start as several other games need other values. It seems that strategy games need more DOSBox tweaking than e.g. adventures. Ok, I think FRAPS also has better video quality, the DOSBox codec seems to be a bit odd. I plan to record some other old games, does World of Longplays(cubex55) need some more stuff? Some are already recorded but on lower quality platforms with not so good sound. I have some PC CD versions of them that I haven´t seen recorded on UA-cam yet.

...WE'RE BEEEIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIN' ATAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKT!!!!!!!
I like how the intro said "Welcome to the World of Warcraft." When they were writing this line, they had no clue how true this will turn out to be.
oooooor DIIIIID THEEEY
Yes World of Warcraft is a MMORPG
@@OlviMasta77 No, they didn't.
Been watching this and your human playthrough the last days. great work. easily the best playthrough on youtube.

It was oddly satisfying to see that conjurer get killed. It was like he just walked into the axe.
Only being able to control four units at a time would drive me insane.
Steve Pearson they initially made the game so you could control as many units as you’d like. But they decided that made the game too easy and removed the tactics out of the game. So they limited to 4.
It's not that bad if you use them like fire teams, keeping your groups apart and giving them orders serially.

warcraft 3 reforged?
@@Covefiel no
That moment at the end when you have an immense feeling of satisfaction as the game ends, but then realize that the word possess is spelled wrong.
They even credited the fucking kitchen sink. What legends
those demons are so fucking overpowered
Gosh this brings back memories, i used to play on my Dads lap this when i was 3.
You can download the remakes of orc and human custom campaign from Warcraft I: Orcs and Humans in Hive for your Warcraft III:Frozen Throne now.
omg :D just an random though "hmm what warcraft I would look like" brings me here and haha im loving it! thanks for the preview
I wish they would bring these back
SWAAMPS OF SOORROOWW. god that played in my head when i leveled in swamp of sorrows earlier :'D
the jump of graphics of warcraft 2 to 3 was amazing
Warcraft 3 was pretty impressive at the time, but I never liked the art-style they went for
What's really crazy is warcraft orcs and humans came out a year before warcraft 2 with a amazing jump in graphics
Best RTS with dune2
You are SO right... Bet you are like me, played those as a kid, and now halfway through life. 🎻
The orc campaign in nowhere near as ear-grating as Human one with constant repetitions of the same voice lines. And I think it has better music as well.
After watching some WC2 vids guess was only a matter of time before WC1 recommendations. Some fond memories, loved the Daemon that was so OP.
Wc1 was more brutal and dark then the other games for sure.. Wc2 was more fantasy driven and anything after that was just mainstream fantasy

I played this with my ball mouse
I haven't played this since it was first released. The music sounds different. Probably because of my low quality sound card at the time
The only sound I can distinctly remember are those of the damn woodcutters at work.
I've always wondered why any MIDI Music sounds different from computer to computer?
So the Orcs took Stormwind by summoning daemons overr and over again.
mejercit yes!
And Doomgaurd at that!
13:22 that level! It made me crazy! Made me quit to play the orc campaign! It was horrible and desperate! And I am talking that I was 5 years old!

I remember that I had the sound issue. All voices were "fast forwarded". It sounded like chipmunks.
1:57:45 its better to leave one demon to defend city while they teleport and replace with another when times expire
Nice that in the Orc campaign you play as Orgrim Doomhammer
I never Player Warcraft 1 , are there diffrence playing human or Orcs
Why does the title screen and music look and sound like Tie Fighter? It doesn't look like the same company made both.

All depends on micromanagement. If you use skeletons and unholy armor correctly they are not bad.

If you control your Grunt, you can fight vs 2 Footmen. For Footmen likewise.

Also, unfair, you didn't really show what Stormwind Keep looked like.
+thewallofsleep True, I should've circled the building the reveal it properly, but I also blame devs for surrounding it with walls ;)
They could have hired an actual British person for the intro.
They didn't hire ANYONE for the intro. Every voice in this game is Bill Roper.
Video game developers had a lot less money back then. This whole game was probably made in one room by a dozen guys.
I am back.
tell fast how can it be a spearman when itgs clearly an orc LÙ"JLLULLULULULLULU
So dumb mission with stealth unit just place range unit around the base can already
