Scotty i put on brand new strut mount from KYB and five mile down the road start making noise when I turn
Your a funny guy!
@@omarcarnegie7614 Were you able to find out the problem?
Spring compressor?
Always make sure to exercise caution with compressed suspension coil springs. Be sure your compressor is in good mechanical condition and lube the bolts of the compressor heavily with axle grease. If you see the compressor hooks moving or slipping under tension, STOP and relieve the pressure.
Tighten each side equally. 3 turns on one side, 3 on the other. Alternate.
Improper compressing of front springs will kill you if they break loose and hit you.
thank you for this. i'll be replacing the suspension on my volvo soon, so these tips help
Scary is the most important details Scotty left out. I hope a 1st timer looks at more videos after being entertained here before tackling the job.
I always feel so relieved to see you when I search for "how to's". You make everything short, sweet and simple. You allow me to conjure the confidence I already possess. Sometimes people just need a little push and you do it right!
Sir...its very helpful...no drags..no drama..but straight forward and clear. All the best
I read lots of web page about strut mount and none can demonstrate as clear as in your video. Thanks.
I'm doing this now and he definitely makes it look easier than it actually is
Great video, I'm dealing with strut and mount replacement right now on my '92 Dodge Shadow. Boy, it sure must be nice not to have to deal with rust belt corrosion on all the parts.
Thanks Scotty! Saved my bacon again! Forgot which way the arrow pointed. Put it all together and nothing lined up! Watched your vid, loosened the assembly, adjusted and back on with zero issues! Thanks again!!
Scotty ,you would be a great auto shop teacher !
This probably is not what my car needs. But just had to post a +1 because he's so fun and entertaining! I love this guy!
that's a world record....new strut in 3 mins
+ 3 hours of aggressive cursing and hammering off-camera to remove the rusted bolts :D And one trip to the glass store to fix the neighbour's windowpane that was totalled after the spring compressor slipped and the spring flew out 100 feet.
I opened this video thinking I could do it in 3 mins somehow lmao.
@@murrysvids I cant lift the car in 3 mins lmao
Should I call her...
Lmao 🤣
Thank you!!! I just bought new struts for the rear of my 170,000 mile Honda CR-V and they told me to get strut mounts. I was wondering if this was important or of it was an up-sell job. Thank you for this video. I can see why this would be a good thing to replace on a car with this many miles on it. I appreciate your advice. I love your channel.
Great video, Excellent editing ! ! ! And you have an very upbeat tempo that makes your videos all the more watchable.
this was so great, Thank you for putting this together and making the quick edits, this was great for low brow mechanics that know enough to know whats going on but the extra knowledge to fix one's own equipment.
UA-cam recommended this as the right time. My car just started clangin' & bangin' last week after work. After inspecting the bay, I noticed that the passenger side strut rod was tilted towards the driver's side. Now, I'm certain it's the mount that broke.
Putting a set of struts on a minivan this weekend and you just showed me in 3.5 minutes exactly what I was wanting to know, thanks for the short and straight to business tutorial... Subscribed btw.
Hey Scotty, I've been working on an 88 Celica for about a year now, it had been sat for 10 years, outside and on earth. But it's up and running now! I only recently discovered your videos, but they are most helpful. I'm getting ready to change the shocks and mounts now, Hopefully no more enormous clonks from dreadful british roads!
Nice job Scotty, Im doing a lot of repairs myself so your videos are really useful, only problem is that things rust too much here in Czech republic. Only suggestion I have is that its better to actualy split the "split pin" after you put the nut on, not just bend it, because it can fall out easily due to vibrations.
Nice video. The only things I'd add is that first, usually it's MUCH easier if you slightly loosen the top nut and the 3 bolts before jacking up the vehicle. That the strut mount had failed doesn't change that, unless the shock is blown. Second, you'll need a front end alignment.
wow, awesome videos man, everytime I got car problems I go straight to your chanel. Keep up the good work.
I have used wheel bearing grease on hardware my entire 21 year career and NEVER had a problem...ever !!! But working on repeat customers cars is a pleasure as I never have a problem getting fasteners apart
Wow that was awesome. Girls don’t realize how easy this is and that you can do it. Thank you!
It definitely isn't this easy. It depends on the model of your car, but for my Promaster I had to remove brakes, rotors, tie rod, ball joints, much of the dash board( including fuse box on left side). There will probably be some frozen bolts in there for which you need a heavy duty impact wrench and/or torch. It's a lot depending on your car. Glad I've done it to learn but regret not getting a whole strut assembly. Also you should really use a torque wrench to put the bolts back on and a puller to get the tie rod off. This is a good briefing but hopefully folks can find a video specific to their car
I am sure scotty replaced both of them but he only needed to show once side for it was the same on the other. Great Vid scotty
Awesome Scotty, you show in 3 minutes what other guys take 15 minutes to show, plus you don't have death metal playing as a soundtrack. Added bonus: I need to replace the strut mount on my car, and it happens to be a Honda Element. Thank you!
Thank you, Professor Kilmer! :-)
I've learned so many things from watching your videos, also I saved lots of money! Thank you, again!
Thanks Scotty, I picked up some good tips from you.
A pretty straight forward job but it's always nice to have a "refresher" before going into it. It's been a while since I've done one.
Guess What? I "Tested as Suggested" after viewing your video's ta-da Motor Mounts are totally cracked, better than that I had my son start car WoW talk about Engine Moving, it moved big time! goodie, now I know what that noise is! Thank you much!
Great Job and Explanation in less than 4 mins.
You really made me like the mechanics.
Thank you Mr. Scotty
OK...I'm convinced. Not into paying a shop to do what I am totally capable of doing myself (I build my own mountains bikes and even do the shock rebuilds). Cheaper to actually buy the tools and have the ability to do more maintenance in the future for myself or lend to friends/family.
Your the man, for the little man without a big garage, but you know that. Thx for all the info buddy. Nobody knows how much you have in your head..

Hi I watched a lot of UA-cam videos on how to change my strut on my Cadillac 2002 and your video was the best
That really was a great instructional video Scotty! Especially since I have paid my dues with cars over the last 45 years!
Get a Haynes or Chiltons manual for your car or even the original factory service manual if you can. Use a torque wrench and properly torque the bolts/nuts to the right torque so you don't have to worry about breaking them or them falling off while going down the road.
The pacing of this video is great for an overview!
Google knew your video was perfect for me: an element owner. Much love. 😍
Scotty, It will be 2015 in Sixteen weeks and your still kick ass!
Your videos are so much help and fun. You have given me so many tips on my wife's car. Now... I asked you a while back about my car making a whoo whoo whoo whoo noise from the front. It get really loud when you go around right hand bends and turns. I'm thinking wrapped rotors and balance the tires. I'm lost on this one
warped rotors in most cases. And, If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every Saturday morning at 10 AM CST on UA-cam. I answer your car questions LIVE there. OK. Will do.
jed bridge
Does it happen only when you press the brakes or even if you just coast slowly around the turn with your foot off the break?
jed bridge
Also, which tire does it seem like it's coming from?
The front drivers side. I believe its the hub.
5 people didn't like this vid, must be auto dealer repair employees. They don't like you taking money out of their pockets. Keep it up we appreciate you.
Thanks for making this video it gives me an idea on how to check my car's strut mount!!
AWESOME Video Scotty! This will make doing the struts on my 95 Avalon a LOT easier--I'm hoping Auto Zone has spring compressors when I finally get around to doing this service (not looking forward to it--but your video makes it doable!).
THANK YOU SCOTTY!
Only wish it took 3 min. Lol awesome videos sir. Keep them coming. I'm from Houston too.
If the strut mounts break you might as well replace the whole strut assembly and also don't forget to get a alignment after
I think you're finally getting the hang of that spring compressor tool! :)
This looks like hard work. You did great.
Scotty is the only mechanic I would trust with my car, pity he lives in the USA.
Scotty, you make it look so easy!

I've had my struts replaced and they car still ride like crap. Changing the springs at the same time made them ride so much better.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth.... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 🌈 ✌ ☮ ❤
Awesome video Scotty ! Always enthusiastic in your video no tiring full energetic every single time.
Clear and concise how to video. Well done Sir.
Great vid, just got done £90 by Kwikfit for this after it caused an MOT fail, if it wasn't for the fact I couldn't have done it without needing whole MOT re-done, I'd have done it, now I can do the rest 👍
Thank you Scotty simply easy in your hands
Excellent video very well paced, details were explained quicky with fluid transitions
you will need a impact gun to do this job correctly. It's near impossible to take off or to bolt back on the strut into its mount. The strut will spin when you try to tight it up. this will take about 1 hour if you know what you are doing. if it's your first time expect about 3 to 4 hours.... with the right tools.
scotty always makes it look easy... just keep that in mind/
Cant you just grip it with that big hex socket in the top of the strut?
Can't you just break it while it's still on the car and torque it when it's back on the car ?
Depends on the specific strut. On some of them, the top of the shaft is keyed to fit into the mount and not spin.
The strut tube can spin independently, and not all struts have a solid way to hold them (be it the allen key, or a 2 sided for vice-grips). I ran into this problem on a number of vehicles and the only way to get the nut off was to pray an impact worked. I have had best success breaking the top nut loose (by hand) while it was still in the car, but never take the top nut anywhere near off without compressing the spring.
My strut has a weird rectangle shape on the top. No hex or torx. It's a royal pain trying to loosen that upper nut.
These videos are awesome, shot for saving me money scotty
scotty your lifesaver, much love
Great video, short and to the point!
Good stuff Scotty!!! gonna start with my fuel injectors in my F.Taurus then I'll come back and review this very Vid!!! Thank you!!!
Very helpful, you make it look so simple. I'm sure I'll struggle with every simple step
I'm doing this tomorrow tks for the vid very helpful
Scotty, you're an interesting character. Thanks for the cool video.
For my 2007 Dodge Caliber, tools will cost about $200. Since I prefer DYI, and I have most of the tools and as you suggested, replace the struts while everything is off. For my vehicle they do have a loaded strut assembly. Thanks :)
Great video. That looks very straight forward. Why does my mechanic want $1600 to replace struts and mounts on my 2001 Volvo S40?
cause volvos are Euro cars and euro mechanics like ripping people off, it's in their blood. Plus, good parts are not cheap on them.
Try getting the right strut mount replacements for a 94 eagle summit. Everyone I've seen, which is very few, all look different from the original and from each other. I'm assuming there's a couple different ones that'll work though, I'm just glad I don't drive the thing anymore, got another ride now... yeah!
Scotty I love your show and agree with you many times, but for the love of Scott, PLEASE EMPHASIZE SAFETY, and instruct your viewers to use jack stands and any safety measures available when working on something that can potentially kill them. I would never want to hear UA-cam's favorite mechanic was crushed by a prius after his floor jack failed. Guys like you keep guys like me wrenching on my own vehicles. Keep up the good work Scotty!
Educational and fun to watch Scotty. Thanks for all the vid's
thank you scotty! you are a Godsend!
My 2005 Volvo XC70 eats upper strut mount like potato chips, the lower suspension arms too. The strut mounts are all rubber so it rides smoother and quieter but they wear out after 70,000 mi. The struts are tough, made in Germany I think. But, everything else wears out quickly. Volvo changed the suspension geometry while using the same components as the front wheel drive model. It's like putting a lift kit on a pick-up truck.
I like your style Scotty, very informative videos.
Scotty's the Best!
U the best of all I watch...
Great video as usual Scotty! Thanks!
Nice!! very helpful, I watch your videos all the time.
Do not atempt this yourself, be VERY VERY caferul with compressing springs I know a guy who smashed the front of his face in when the spring popped out.
I need this guy to work on my car
Always use new cotter pins in the castle nuts, and get a new front end alignment after doing front and or rear suspension work.
Wow just the video I needed to see thanx my strut mounts are dry rotted.
Another great video Scotty
Awesome job man! tyvm
After replacing the front struts (with the original springs), the steering wheel feels tighter than the way it felt prior to the replacement. I suspect that's because the top nut on the strut mount was too tight (with a few threads on top of the top nuts). However, I would have to redo the whole job to loosen up the top nut just for the few threads. If the tighter feeling caused by the few threads of the top nuts or something else? I just don't want to go through everything then end up no improvement. Thanks Scutty!
I'm curious, how did that turn out?
This guy is the best.
woke up this morning decided to replace the struts on my car myself...out comes scott yelling in my kitchen through my trash can "rev up your engines!" then i kicked the trash can lol
Mr Kilmer, I do not think it is as easy as it seems like in this video ... but I think would manage it (after some professional steering wheel adjustment assistance) !
Thank you very much for this video, Scotty!

Thanks for making these videos, your information is very helpful
you sir!!! are the best!!! thanks!! from mexico with love!!!
What a good video. I love that it nice and short to the point. My car started making the noise of metal clunking around and now from this video there is a good chance I need new strut mounts.
Question should I replace both strut mounts or just the one that needs to be replace?
rub504 see how cracked they look, often the passenger side one breaks much earlier from hitting pot holes
Scotty Kilmer it's shot. I bought new ones for both might as well. Im having trouble taking off the top nut that holds the mount. When im turning to loosen it, the shock turns with it. Im stuck trying to take off that nut.
I did the same job on a 2002 Corolla with the same spring compressor. The Corolla spring was so small that I barely was able to compress it. I was worn out after just 1 side!
Some are scared to get shot by the spring lol but that's probably carelessness/impatience when using the spring compressor
nice work scotty!

Hello.
Love your videos.
I have a 2004 Honda Element EX 4WD i bought real cheap and got it cheap because a friend wanted to help my son get his first vehicle.
I knew it had problems but not rsally anything i couldn't fix.
Now, the front end had issues. I replaced the top strut mounts on both sides 3 months ago and now i decided to replace everything since the mounts went bad again. It looks like there is an angle issue. Also bear in mind that i took it to be alligned front and rear. 88$ for front allignment but now im puzzled because i dont see any way the front can be alligned. Also since there was some play in the control arm bushing i also replacing the aframes.
Im still afraid there will be an angle issue after all is said and done.
The new Quick struts are Gabriel Ultra G-Force.
Have u had any issues withe the strut mounts wearing out so fast.
Btw, im front east Texas.
Thanks
This was fascinating thank you
Always love your video's Scotty!
I feel common sense here and I like it.
what you forgot to mention is that those bolts on the front of the strut should be marked also. so you can get it back into alignment. though an alignment and probally new tires are in order if the strut has been bad a while
love your video it help me a lot thank you mr scotty
no nonsense! you're the man !
