They could chew through attacking aircraft like a cruiser and won a Presidential Unit Citation after wiping out most of a Japanese destroyer squadron off Cap St. George on New Ireland. Captain Arleigh Burke, their most famous commander, eventually became CNO under Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy.
