    Before MacArthur got married in the 1930's he had a 16 year old Phillipino girlfriend. She lived with him in Manila and Washington D.C. everyone knew. MacArthur was a pedophile! I've lost respect for him. Also he and his chief of Staff were bastards!

It goes on to mention how Ukraine appears to changing the trend.

    One interesting statistic (Of many that one could use here!) was that the Allied mobile field-workshop repair & reconditioning units (REME, RCEME & US Mechanical Engineers), particularly in the British & Canadian sectors were able to repair & return to active service, over 70% of all their hitherto knocked out armoured vehicles (Tanks, self-propelled guns, personnel carriers, reconnaissance vehicles etc.) within a 4 to 5 days timespan of being knocked out & towed to these field repair workshops on site just behind the frontlines during the Normandy Campaign in 1944! Insufficient credit & recognition have been since really accorded to these indispensable units’s battlefield services, in the particularly efficient & effective ways they were actually able to repair & recycle so many damaged & discarded armoured fighting vehicles that proved to have a critically positive impact on the successful outcome on the overall operationally successful combat results for the Allied side in this Campaign! Not to mention also the ingenuity & improvised acuity of their professional field skills in introducing items such as in the US sectors of the “Rhino-Hedge-Cutting/Bulldozing Devices” composed entirely of ‘cannibalized parts’ of the fixed German Beach Defences & steel obstacles there, then adapting these onto welded steel frames & then fixing these adapted frames & self-fabricated blades etc., onto the fronts of Sherman & Stuart Tanks, in order to cut effectively through hedgerows & other vegetation that served as obstacles to the American & Allied Advance in the infamous “Bocage” countryside in Normandy then! Otherwise, how quickly these same units were also able to repair & returned the numerous invaluable & devastatingly effective “Specialized Armored Vehicles” of the British 79th Armoured Division (Hobart’s Funnies) back into active service after they had suffered catastrophic damage or else somehow broken down on combat deployment there!

    -- I suspect that the enemy hoped to inflict maximum casualties and demonstrate that invading Germany would be too costly (pre A bomb thinking) to pursue, and thereby play to the allied and especially the US homefront. The most optimisticbobjectives and hopes of inflaming conflicts of interest among the Anglo American allies was just wishful thinking. Good thing we had huge concentrations of artillery on Northern flanks of the bulge. Even so, the Northern route wasn't at all suited to heavy tanks and long columns during that time of year and enemy would have had problems keeping to time tables without opposition. By December 24 the USAAF was again on the loose and chewing up any daytime movement or junctions etc; time was up and the offensive was stalked out, and then they tried it again in Jan with Nordwind and Bodenplatte. Enemy had no chance. Japans mission had also changed toward efforts to simply inflict as many casualties as possible in hopes of persuade US homefront that the continuation of war was too costly and painful... Nothing worked out for them.

    I an really glad you have done an episode on Saipan, be it a very short one. Here is why this battle is little known in Europe; you have done one 45 minute episode on Saipan but sixteen episodes on D-Day and the subsequent battles total about 12 hours of coverage. If people don't talk aboit something it will be forgotten.

  • @PalleRasmussen
    @PalleRasmussen 26 днів тому

    45 minutes is really too little time to talk of Saipan. Bill and Seth has three ( I think it is three) really good episodes on it- IMO some of the best they have done on any subject. And with Jon Parshall, who basically makes everything better.

    I think it fortunate that the Allies basically gave the Germans an impossible tactical/strategic problem set. Because their air and naval power gave them the ability to attack almost anywhere in Europe, the Germans had to defend everywhere and hence were always going to be relatively weak in most places. The rational course for the Germans after mid-43, with the setback at Kursk and the loss of Sicily, was to read the writing on the wall and sue for peace. But the Germans, had they been rational, would never have started the war in the first place.

    I went by motorbike from Paris to Arromanche via Mt Ormell and Falaise…..the year Obama was present. All the flags were flying from Mt Ormell onwards which I found impressive. The reenactors I found initially very uncomfortable, but I camped among them in the Municipal campsite at Arromanche, and then I realised it was a celebration of their liberation, and not in bad taste, but the reverse. I discovered Crépon and the Green Howards/Stan Hollis memorial, and was invited to a service a week later , by the Mayor. I was very impressed by the dignity and respect shown by the very many local people who attended.

    I have always wondered why no follow up was considered for Normandy. Getting ashore and getting a foothold is objective one. But did no one seriously consider what comes after? The more I read about the post-Normandy battle is a bit of an improvised plan, it would make sense to after an after plan for driving to Germany.

    • @steveholmes11
      @steveholmes11 27 днів тому

      I understand there was insufficient intelligence to plot 2 weeks breakout fighting after the beaches. The actual follow-up seems pretty successful. * Massive aerial interdiction, putting an end to German rail capacity. * Constant enemy contact, sucking in reserves for piecemeal destruction. * Sufficient land behind to bring up supplies reserves replacements and all the gubbins of modern war fighting.
