  • Hello and welcome to Basic Fishing from New Zealand. In this video, I talk about what I consider to be the top 5 baits for surfcasting and talk about why these baits are great to use and the species of fish you'll land and talk about some pros and cons on the baits. I get asked a lot on what bait I use and also I had used many different baits over the years but these 5 proved to be in the top list for me so I hope people will find some inspiration in this video and also help them to land a few fish as well

Hi Peter, great video and some varied baits.
Down here in the 'Naki' Octopus is my choice for Snapper, works well and the Sharks aren't that keen on it.
Pilchards, squid, kahawai, prawns, mussels and crayfish are also favourites.
    Cheers Kevin

Hey dude i cant get any fish on west coast karioitahi n hamiltons gap. Do you think it might be because i cant cast further than 15 meters?

I generally bait up the sabiki and berley around the beach to get the baitfish's attention although the crabs also get curious lol

best bait almost always is fresh bait caught on the day end of story and it's free. You call yourself basic fishing yet most of your videos are about buying stuff you don't actually need.

    • @emosnow2336

Did you watch the video?? Like 4 out of 5 can be harvested and not bought, he just says that it is expensive if you buy it rather than harvest it yourself
